thts going to be my school if i dont get accepted anywhere else
and ye
they REALLLY like locals

Yeah they do. If you're in VA, you have a great shot there. If not... then not so much. But it's still not a bad school, it's just important to think about all the relevant factors.

Are you VA Chinook?

I'm coming to Tulane party. I'm so hungry, what should I eat?

I'm thinking EVMS is going to be a tough choice, man. The only thing I would advise you about there is they have a very high matriculation rate from their SMP program, so their OOS stats are abnormally skewed.

Not to mention their GPA... Just an FYI to think about.
their gpa is a 3.6???? thats not high. What did you mean? I didnt realize that about their SMP program...but w/e id still apply theres not really another school id add in its place anyways that wouldnt be some reach school.

yups

Michigan State takes in so few OOS, caesar, why are you applying there?

they do interview OOS
so its nt impossible
i went there for an interview day and i think out of 8 or 9 applicants
about 5 or 6 were OOS
3 from CA, 1 from FL, and some others

it was just one day though.. so idk

I don't know if I'd apply to EVMS from out of state. I'm hesitant to apply there from in state. I'm a little biased though just b/c I hear so much about uva and mcv

They take a decent amount of OOS students, not to mention they are greatly increasing their class size this class so it could get even better. In the 2009-2010 class they actually took about 50% OOS. Their OOS tuition is insane though which made me not apply.

Should I add more schools? Which ones?

I actually think you have a nice list of schools. It seems well selected. I would throw on just a few more just to be safe and maybe a nice reach school.

A couple that might not be bad:

Creighton
Jefferson (I've heard great things about this place)

And I also think you might be a pretty good candidate for some of the Texas schools.

Overall, your school list looks very similar to mine.

oh shoot
that reminds me
TX schools open tomorrow
grr

What? My MSAR says they interview only 5% of their OOS applicants.

yeah, I'm applying to Jefferson as well.

chinook, are you going to apply to virginia tech? They aren't on the AMCAS yet, but I think they should be by fall time. I wouldn't mind going to school down there, I've heard carillion is a pretty good hospital.

Are you in-state? No, I mean the SMP program students would make the gpa less representative by left-skewing the data. I think the average SMP student has ~3.1 or 3.2, and they offer most of them spot, not to mention the ones they take from other SMP's.

Just keep it in mind.

Nice. I thought you were in Canada for some reason.

Nah, in-state you've got to apply. It's a great in-state backup.

So is it a waste of time to apply there then OC as an out of state?

And blue youre msar is always different...i dont get it are you using some like online version or something? Anyways the 2010-2011 one states that 23% of their incoming class is OOS, not to mention im sure many OOS people turn them down due to their insane tuition. I was reading that they are increasing their class size to liek 200 over the current 156 so that may mean more OOS spots.

It sounds like they're going to be highly PBL based :barf:. I'll apply there if I don't have many interviews by the time they open up their app.

I think we are talking about different things, elijah. You are quoting the class composition.
I'm quoting how many of their OOS applicants they actually interview, which I think is a more useful indicator.

canada????

do i type with a canadian accent

😳
ok not so funny

Actually... Yes. 😛

I don't know if I would say it's a waste, but I would get all of your schools in line before you make a decision. Then see how much your apps are going to be and what is high/low risk. Then cut the fat from there.

Whaaaaaaat! Why don't you like PBL?

I don't like the idea of PBL myself. Sounds like a waste of time.
I prefer the old-fashined lecture style.

Why use OOS interviews that doesnt make a whole lot of sense? Georgetown only interviews 9% of their OOS applicants going by those standards does that mean they are OOS unfriendly?

Well if they're going to do that non-stop then I think it'd be worthless. Let's say you're 2 weeks into med school and they give you and 4 other people a description of a patient. Then you 5 have to come up with a plan over the next week. I don't think that'd be nearly as productive unless you've had physiology, anatomy, biochem, and pathology first.

Even then, why give them a scenerio? Just send them to the clinic.

But Georgetown is a private school, so it doesn't count.
