THanks man, which one is more competitive md/phd or mstp?? i know both are the same thing but one is supported by nih and other one is usually not. since u applied to uva, how long did they take to respond to ur application???

MSTPs are generally more competitive as in they take people with higher stats and have more seats. It is funded by the NIH so if you drop out, there's no repayment necessary. At your interviews, you will have to show them your commitment to research. This is usually done by 1) research in undergrad over years at one lab (or other exposures) 2) knowing what you will do as MD/PhD (they are not there to fund your interests, trust me) 3) showing excitement in life as a physician scientist and the school you are interviewing at.

MSTPs have generally more seats than MD/PhD schools. While MSTPs usually have higher avg stats, some small MD/PhD programs do like to take internal applicants (who may have done research during post-bac), so it is hard enough to get into those schools.

If you apply MD/PhD, I would apply to schools with large formal programs. If you have done your research on other schools, feel free to apply (ie your undergrad research overlaps with research at certain school).


MD/PhD application season depends on each school. Some schools have one committee, ie PENN. If you don't get MSTP, you don't get MD. They have block interview session by subject area. Decisions in March. However, most programs usually interview earlier, ie Pitt/NYU/Sinai/etc. They like to be completely done by December. You can be considered for MD only, but it puts you late in the game. Some schools require an acceptance from the MD committee first and then the PhD committee. Do not apply MD/PhD thinking its double your pleasure double your fun. You should still apply early.

Generally, the purpose of a cover is to honor the covered song by updating it or in some way producing something that enhances the original. If anything, Kanye's version destroys everything I liked about that song. 🙁
