haha! maybe if you had gone 6 probe pool you woulda been fine...

oh and quick question for those waitin for wake: do they snail mail the secondary!?

yeah, the application fee, I did.

I have never played starcraft, wow, or any of those games.. i was just trying to fit in with the board lingo

awww shame. ive only played starcraft. its a nice stress relief strategy over long cold winter breaks

I never got into those games. I played CounterStrike and DoD for a considerable amount of my life but that was about it.

Yeah, I totally use it all the time...

P.S. wtf are y'all talking about?
from wikipedia:

In real-time strategy (RTS) and team-based first-person shooter (FPS) computer games, a rush is a fast attack involving one or a few unit types.

In starcraft, if you played as the zergs, it was really effective to rush your opponents. I mean, I guess people still play this game, so I shouldn't be typing in the past tense.

I never did understand how to use the zergs effectively.

Dude, Day of Defeat is totally, ****ing awesome. We should play it sometimes.

Oh, Starcraft. 😍 It's such a fortunate thing that the majority of the med school admissions process will be done when SC2 is released... or my chances of becoming a doctor would plummet significantly.

Red Alert series is better than Starcraft.👍

I've played Red Alert 3, the newest one, and it was kind of a disappointment. I do agree though, the earlier Command and Conquer games were the best of their kind a couple years ago.

Have any of you watched the battle reports for SC2? They're amazing... it's hard to believe there are actual professional Starcraft players who play for a living. I want to go to South Korea someday to see it for myself.

http://www.starcraft2.com/features/battlereports/3.xml

In South Korea, top Starcraft players are treated like NBA or NFL stars here. Starcraft is basically a sport over there. I should know.

OHSU does not have some out of state GPA cut off that will cut you out considering you have a 3.4. In fact they are known for not caring about stats and liking people who have had very interesting stories (non-trad) or paths through life (your artist stuff probably fits that bill). They take a huge number of OOS and it really irritates the in state reisdents somewhat as they dont give a huge preference to IS for a public school. I would add it again if the only reason you took it off was the OOS reqs. It also fits nicely the things you listed about liking schools. Also if you like jeff you might as well think about drexel? Though you might consider drexel a safety so .

Oh and what about penn state? Not too far away from where else you are applying, are a solid mid tier school in the middle of where, and if you are worried about money, ive heard they tend to give a lot fo aid.

hmm, ok then that might not be it. I'll have to go back and check them out again, but i distinctly remember being all excited to apply there, and then seeing something either in MSAR or their website that made me say "Dammit! I can't apply here." but now i cant remember what it was. it might have been some class they require that i haven't taken.

i would love to live in portland though. i heard it's the most vegetarian-friendly city in the US! plus i'm just an all-around hippie, so, it would be lovely for me. i'll look again, you have me second guessing myself now. for what its worth, i hope you're right and i can apply there.

edited to add: ok I figured it out. well, first of all, they require a semester of genetics . . . which is weird to me because i'd think most premeds have NOT taken it? i definitely havent. but also, they require a math course- NOT including statistics. my undergrad institution had a loophole where if we got a good enough math score on the ACT, we could take stats to fulfill the math requirement for graduation. so, i did that. so i dont have an acceptable math course OR genetics. so that all sucks . . believe me, it was a real disappointment to take it off my list. it would have been one of my top choices. how firm are schools regarding their requirements, though? if they like you enough will they let it slide? i guess i could always apply there and promise to take those courses this year if they let me in . . .

Looks like I'm going to have to call them and see how strict they are once the secondary comes out. I already knew I was going to have to make up biochem if I was still in the running come springtime, but I don't think I want to be taking 2 classes and working full time...

Biology - One academic year of general biology to include one genetics course. Laboratories are recommended.
Chemistry - One course each of general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. Laboratories are recommended. (Since undergraduate curricula vary from school to school, in fulfilling this requirement it is implied that the required prerequisite sequences in general and organic chemistry will have been completed in order to take the biochemistry course.)
Physics - One academic year of general physics. Laboratories are recommended.
Mathematics - One mathematics course (not including statistics). A course in statistics is strongly recommended.
Humanities, Social Sciences and English - Two academic years of humanities and/or social sciences to include one course in English composition (or equivalent writing emphasis).

wow genetics thats odd, now im glad UCI makes you take genetics, biochem, and molecular bio to graduate...seems these are becoming common pre reqs. I dont know how strict they are mary youd have to call, but every schools ive called has always said as long as its done by matriculation you are fine. It would probably suck to go take like calc and genetics but . I know what you mean about portland, id absolutely love to be here, and its still some what close to cali for me 🙂

yes, this in particular makes no sense to me. one year of biology does not 'include' a genetics course. their MSAR stats make absolutely no sense to me, the only thing i can infer is that they are on a 3- quarter system (which wouldnt really be quarters would it?) because it also says they require 3 'quarters' of physics and 3 of bio . . . so that would explain how you could take two bio courses and one genetics course in one year . . . but how the hell are the 99% of us who had NORMAL semesters supposed to interpret this crapola??????

Most of your units are weak, but you can produce them quickly and cheaply. Usually the strategy is to overwhelm your opponent with units. Most players make 3-5 hatcheries at their main base that constantly produce units.

Defilers also have, IMO, the two best abilities in the game in dark swarm and plague. If you can use defilers well as a zerg player you're pretty hard to beat. Playing as zerg does take a lot of micromanagement though.

I personally like the Protoss. It's amazing to use those Carriers.

quarter system does refer to 3 quarters, its what a lot of the cali schools are on, like me. I agree though for a non-bio major on a semester system thats gotta be a pain.

and omg starcraft....so many memories from back in the day!🙂. I havnt played in years though 🙁

all right . . . you may have talked me into it. I wouldnt take genetics and math for just anybody, but for OHSU i would. it's worth a shot at living in portland 😍

and on the upside, it only says labs are recommended, not required. so if they let me in, i wouldn't have to make up my stupid inorganic chem labs that i've still never taken. (i know, i know, my prereqs are a mess.) it's funny that i have so many 'recommended' courses like biochem and stats and i'm struggling with the basics like math. the joy of doing everything out of order . . .

We should have like a giant Starcraft get-together sometimes.👍

I wonder if 2013 people play. We could have like 2013 vs. 2014.

Yeah, protoss are pretty much the opposite of zerg. Expensive, really tough units. The emphasis is also more on macro management as opposed to micro with the zerg. In other words, if you can make a fat fleet of carriers, you're hard to stop no matter what you do with them (unless you're really stupid or whoever you're playing is pretty good). You do have to watch out for terran with EMP/lockdown and zerg with plague/darkswarm + hydras, though.

Yeah, I also find the cost to be big problem early on in the game. It's hard to stay on top of things when your opponent is pretty good Zerg hitting you early with zerglings, hydralisks, mutalisks and you're trying to build up your defense. Later on, when things are stable, you definitely have the advantage though. I like to mix dragoons with Archons and with air support in the fom of Carriers.

Definitely, I'm a big protoss fan. Starcraft 2 gives Protoss some nice, hard-hitting mid-game units in place of the dragoon. Immortals have the hardened shield ability, where if they would get hit for over 20 damage it reduces it to 20 (great for surviving siege tank onslaughts). Then there's the stalker, a lighter version of the dragoon with the blink ability, to teleport into bases and escape lethal situations.

My computer is almost done killing itself! I'll be restoring it all day tomorrow.
There's a good chance I won't be able to browse SDN all night tonight, because I won't really have computer access. 🙁
Happy Sunday and good luck as the offices reopen on Monday! Hopefully I'll be able to rejoin the thread on my computer tomorrow.

we definitely need to get a game together at some point once SCII comes out. how great would it be if a couple of us had same day interviews at a school and played post interview?! haha just a thought...

It's almost frustrating how finished it looks, knowing it's going to be several months until beta testing is done. Just give it to me! 😀

Dude, that sounds pretty nerdy, but I would be down with it.

I'm in... we can start an SDN channel, maybe even password it, and collect some people for a hard-earned post-interview or 🙂xf🙂 post-acceptance SC2 game. 😀

IMO, the best way to start with protoss is to build only 1-2 cannons for detection purposes, and just build units instead. Dragoons and zealots are just as good if not better at defending your base than cannons, plus they're mobile.

If I'm playing a FFA game with protoss, I generally build enough zealots and dragoons to hold my expansion, add in a few reavers to act like siege tanks, and then just tech up to carriers. If I'm playing melee, I mostly go with dragoons early and get observers ASAP. At that point you can figure out what your opponent is doing and hopefully counter it. For example, if he's zerg, you probably want to go with templar + psi storm, and then adjust based on if he's going ground or air.

I think it'd be awesome to have nerdy classmates in med school, at least to an extent. I'm most relaxed around people as unabashedly geeky as myself. 😎

You sound like you could kick all our asses at the same time in Starcraft.
