Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How important is location to you? IIRC you care about climate, or southernness, or something like that?

Cuz, Houston kinda sucks (traffic, weather, etc) - hey, I lived there, so I am entitled to rag on it...did you really look around WashU much? Yeah, the park across the street is nice, but the immediate neighborhood (south and east) really sucks (have family there)...

OTOH, the Vandy area of Nashville, and Charlottesville, are pretty darn nice...

Clearly this should not be the #1 factor, but it is pretty important to me, just curious if it is in your thinking or not.

All of that has been taken into consideration in my "ranking" of the schools. If WashU wasn't in St. Louis, it'd probably be a bit higher on my list.

I mean, actually I've been pleasantly surprised that Houston traffic isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, at least if you're smart and aren't trying to get on the highway at rush-hour. They also have an excellent public transportation system from what I've seen. And the whole Rice Village area is really nice, and it's practically right across the street from the Texas Medical Center. Furthermore, for me, the convenience of being in a big city like Houston was important. As for weather, I'd rather bake a little in the summer than freeze in the winter; I ABHOR the cold.

So I agree, location is important... and actually, that's a big reason I like Baylor 🙂 Seriously, the whole idea that Houston sucks is really overblown; coming from San Antonio, I grew up feeling the same way and it actually led me to declining going to Rice, but now that I actually live here, I think it's great. I always saw myself as going back home to San Antonio, but I could see myself staying here the rest of my life, easily.

And I think that's going to be the end of my open campaigning for Baylor in this thread. That's kind of awkward. Whenever you want, we can talk elsewhere, and metallica (and anyone else applying to Baylor) can PM me.

wow i did not get ticketed, thats pretty sick.

for those that are considering philly (penn), you should watch the show parking wars. we are pretty brutal with fines

at some parts of the city, meters (which we are trying to get rid of) can charge 25 cents to park for 7 min

come to think of it, location kind of was my #1 factor in choosing which schools to apply to. i (mentally) drew lines on a map and refused to go past them. and within those lines, i applied almost exclusively in cities. to each his own, i suppose.

Yeah, location is pretty high for me, too. Location, the need for a car (don't have one and don't want one, or if I really must have a car, don't want to drive in a hellish city), and overall "niceness" (safety, services) of the area matter to me.

Thus I like the small to medium sized towns, and I also like NYC. Not interested in big cities where a car is a necessity (LA, Houston, Atlanta, and Miami come to mind, but there are others, too).

Finally, prefer a milder climate, but that is not a priority...I am a southerner...

after yesterdays experience

1. Pitt (like i said, **** was rocking)
2. UMDNJ (love my state, love the neighbors, love the inner city)
3. SUNY Downstate (Brooklyn, we go hard)
4. Vanderbilt (I would love to go here, great curriculum, like the campus, pretty girls, southern accents)
5. UofL (I like the cardinals. great city. amazing resources in heart related disease, cool students, nice lunch)
6. Duke (curriculum is an absolute fit, I could do it. Students were cool, but only got to see MS1, they don't decide til march so they can be tied for 6)

they are all number ones really

as of yesterday...

1. UT Southwestern
2. UT Houston
3. Dartmouth
4. SUNY Upstate
5. NYMC
6. SUNY Downstate

i want to be a texan so bad...

I want to marry whomever I fall in love with, be it a doctor, journalist, or anything else. 😀

me too, such a hopeless romantic😳

Um, idk, I really didn't get to talk to many students which kinda upset me. The NC thing, I guess, because I probably wouldn't stay there. And I really wasn't that impressed by their facilities. There are some other little things slipping my mind.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great school. But it's been the one I've been least impressed with.

i was a little underwhelmed with their facilities too.

Hmph. Why can't I take the best things about all the different schools and make a new school and go there?

let's do that! we can just start our own school with all the best qualities of the other schools🙂

as of yesterday...

1. UT Southwestern
2. UT Houston
3. Dartmouth
4. SUNY Upstate
5. NYMC
6. SUNY Downstate

i want to be a texan so bad...

hmm i *think* mine would be:

1. Georgetown
2. Temple
3. Einstein
4. Vemont
5. Wake
6. Penn State

like ksmi though, this could change at any moment. esp. #'s 2-4, but really any of them could change depending on financial aid, second looks, etc.

this thread reminds me to apply to NYU, Penn, Stanford

Im def not applying to NYU, probly still applying to Penn MSTP, maybe to Stanford MSTP since we collaborate heavily

Do it. I grew up in the area. Stanford is worth seeing, even if you get rejected (not that I think you will, but it would be anyway).

No school gets 👍👍 yet. Wake and LSU-NO get a :lame:. Everyone else gets a 👍 so far, just varying degrees of it.

I like this ranking system. I have yet to have a 👎.

Idiots. Both of them. Mostly Crabtree. I hope he has a crappy career for being greedy to point of not playing.

Honestly, I think he was pretty smart. He got what he wanted (well, presumably).

do you guys prefer male or female interviews?

Male. I've had sports conversations in every interview.

Eh... If I had to rank them...

1. Vandy
2. Baylor
3. UVa
4. WashU
5. Tulane
6. LSU-NO
7. Wake

There. This list is subject to change for no reason at all besides the fact that I'm a girl and changing my mind is what I do best.

👍

UVa is that good?

Ksmi, just out of curiosity, what didn't you like about Wake? I too wasn't particularly struck by the school, but I couldn't really pinpoint why. The surrounding town was a little dull for me, and there seemed to be an emphasis on staying in NC, and there seemed to be little opportunity to explore things like global health.

But other than that I don't know why it seemed so lackluster, so I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I liked it a lot at first, but now that I've seen UCLA it just doesn't compare. I still like it but I'm now just aware that it is lacking in certain areas that other schools have covered.

Same here, but sort of the opposite. I didn't really apply anywhere where I couldn't have my car.

good luck at G'Town for both of us, jackson.

i hope we both hear back good news soon🙂 i think georgetown sticks out to me because of location, wide variety of hospitals to do clinicals in, and tons of international and community service opportunities. the students seemed really happy there too.

ya temple was awesome-facilities are brand new, youd see sooo much stuff in the hospital, students seemed like they really love going there

just to let you know the attendings, residents and the med students are all friendly and welcoming. i shadow overnight from 11pm - 8 am friday night to saturday night. one time they let me scrub up and go into the cath lab and watch the procedure directly. they even came into check on me and let me know what was going on.

the attending sends emails letting me know when she is free to be shadowed and if there are any cool cases, the residents call me over.

it seems like crabtree settled for a lot less. around $16 million in guarantees and he was looking for 20-30 million (top 5 money). i think he will be traded next year to be honest.

Yeah, they really seemed big on community service/community health aspects.

OK. I haven't seen specific numbers. I thought they were offering 20 to begin with?

Yeah I think a trade is in order. Good for both parties.

Hmmm everyone's ranking their schools....

So far, if I had to rank the schools I've been to...

1. Morehouse
2. GW
3. Wake Forest
4. SUNY Upstate

But really, they're all good schools. Wake and SUNY are about what and what for me...

lol, we are douchebags no lie. maybe if you call them?
i might call them but w/e...i should be hearing back from my number 1 and 2 choices in late oct or early nov...so i may just stop caring if i hear good news. People make jeff and temple sound awesome i just wanted to go see for myself.

agreed, its good for both parties. hopefully he gets on the field around week 7 or 8 and can show something

if he shows nothing, how are they gonna trade him? I think hes greatly devalued himself and the niners are not going to take like a 2nd round pick or something, they will want a 1st round and even more. I think they are just stuck and will have to work it out unless the niners are going to take less for him

interesting that you liked nymc better than downstate! so different than my experience.

i'm going to rank mine now (since i've only been to 3 interviews) and we'll see if the rankings change... which i'm sure they will.

1. mt sinai
2. harvard
3. downstate
3. umass
5. BU
6. cornell
7. NYU
8. einstein
9. nymc

Of course, actual important conversations happen while I'm not here. 🙄

Spurs, since Baylor doesn't have a second look, I think me and ksmi (if she wants) should just come hang out with you to see stuff. I didn't know that. 🙁

So I totally want to leave Louisiana after today's weather. :dying:
Unfortunately, Houston isn't any better.

And as far as lists go for me, I guess I'll throw mine in (of course, it's not really much of one yet)

1. Baylor, UVa, and Vandy (I know, lame 👎)
4. LSU-NO
5. Ohio State

dw, I'll tell you all about MSSM when I get back Friday.

so i applied to wash u on the 27th for kicks. told my premed committee to send my letter packet there asap. gave them the name and said just to email the packet pdf, and provided the email address. easy as pie.

i send a reminder email today. the response was "i sent the packet to university of washington in seattle. is that the correct school?"

😕 umm... nope. take 2.

huh, interesting that you have downstate/umass above the "big name" schools like cornell and nyu. it'll be fun to see how this original ranking changes once you actually see everywhere...although i seriously doubt that #9 is going to move up at all😛

Peeps:

You have all gone off of the deep end with the school ranking business.

I may have a current #1-3, but after that its just a blur. Why would you even want to yet?

I mean, after the Wake incident, I kind of feel like I would just be jinxing myself to find #8 my only acceptance....

😳 ...

🙁 ...

😡 ...

😴

i seriously LOVED the state schools, though! and yeah, #9 won't change.

quite a progression there!

and, to be honest... my schools are kind of all tied for first or second with nymc a distant 9th. i'm reserving judgment until the schools judge me first 😳

ugh that's awful sorry🙁 premed advisors are so hit or miss-mine likes to tell everyone to go carribean because he's gotten a lot of fliers from them and they "look nice". Although when the time came to write my committee letter, they got it in nice and early in July and were quite helpful so i can't complain too much. luckily i had sdn to inform me that carribean is in fact not the greatest choice in the world🙂

Something to occupy the time, I guess. Plus, it's nice to know once you've been to a school where it stands versus others. Of course, we all just want to accepted somewhere. 😎

Yeah, I figure when I get rejected from everywhere because I'm such as *ss, I can start out embarassed, then sad, then angry, and then just fall asleep because I'm old...

Oh, and tied for 1/2 with NYMC at a distant 9th = comic gold!

SUNY system = 👍

Best state system ever.

grr except when they won't interview someone who's been a resident her entire life!😛

definitely agree, as long as i get accepted somewhere I'll be happy! freinds/family keep asking me which is my #1 though, so I figure I might as well have some kind of idea which one I'd go to if I'm lucky enough to get into more than 1.

Yeah, it helps to be gracious and a little pessimistic in this process, but realistic is good, too. Realistically (which for me is statistically), most people in this thread will get into more than 1 school. Personal rankings help at that point.

Yeah, and now that you have 1000 posts 👍 you are a shoe-in for more SUNY love !

haha i didn't realize that was how it worked, but that's good to know! any love would be better than the 0 for 4 i'm batting right now!!
