Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
even with straight shoulders, i think deadlifts + squats is the best way to improve your overall strength

I usually do seated DB shoulder presses on a shoulder day, repping like 75's. If I'm doing cleans I usually do presses at the end using legs with whatever I'm cleaning.

No, no. The awesomesauce I save for 2013. 2014 isn't worth quite that much effort, you see.

😡 i hope you fail your boards so you drop down with the 2014ers, it'll be like that episode of south park when cartman woke up a ginger

Good luck :luck:. I have Drexel tomorrow. Driving down to Philly tonight.

good luck! will you let me know how you like it? i'm still trying to decide if i should go to my interview there in janurary

That was a very nice thing you said there. Maybe I'll take a year off so I can harass you directly.:meanie:

Yay! I am done editing my paper. Surprisingly....I even kind of like it 😀. Sad though...the last paper for a CPLT class ever. What is everyone up to?

Do you even know who Jason Richardson is? 😛

Sure I do... this guy

My friend wound up spending Thanksgiving alone because the Tuesday before her toilet shattered, flooding her bathroom and, apparently, leaking to the outside of her house, indicating some major not-good things with her house that she felt needed to be addressed ASAP.

I well-justified in blowing my diet to help her eat half of a pepperoni pizza tonight as a makeup Thanksgiving 🙂

Ooh, I've lost two pounds this week. Go me.

I did today, but she was sleeping. So I just stared at her sleeping.

:scared:

Who's excited for the week after Thanksgiving?

You know, that week where professors who are bitter about missing a few days of class shove endless amounts of material down our throats (at least ime)?

I actually am going to miss all this week for interviews, which will make catching up once I get back (right before finals) that much more fun, to be honest...

That sucks!!! :luck: Have fun itnerviewing though.

I should be in the spring as well, who are you guys teaching for?

TPR

Aww...

So class went well. I didn't have any questions I couldn't answer, but I felt a little boring. At least I didn't f up the material. That could be bad. The next few lectures are more interesting topics too, so I don't think this teaching thing will be so bad.

oh, it will be the other way around, young lady

did i ever tell you how much of a nerd you are 😉 what kind of paper is it, btw

what subject are you teaching? I'll be teaching TPR too(bio for me), I failed my qualifying exam the first time lol.

I teach MCAT classes as well, actually. My current class is phenomenally lazy, though, so I get frustrated trying to get them to ask questions or think about the material at all. It's definitely a fun experience, and my boss is real laid-back. I also tutor OChem through TPR, which is a little less boring since the student is actually motivated. You can still only take so much Sn1 crap.

And I teach biology, too. 😀

not since 3 days ago and I need no reminders as I am proud to be thus! 😛

The paper is on "The Nose" and "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol...how the grotesque actually makes his works more realistic than other writers that may be called realist.

I apparently lost 0.6 pounds since last Sunday. Considering that Thanksgiving was in the middle of that, I'm considering that an overwhelming win.

Now, I'm sure I just gained a pound or two just on that meal of 3 slices of peperoni lovers... but seriously, it was for a friend in need 😀

Do the kids seem to actually pay attention?

I teach GChem. My class seems pretty focused. They understood what I was teaching which is the most important part. I just wish they would appease me and actually try and answer my questions. It was kinda hard today because it was all really basic stuff and I feel that they felt like I was patronizing them by asking easy questions. Idk. We'll see how this goes.

Nay. One girl in my class is more concerned with getting a guy in the class into her pants than she is with the exam that could potentially determine her future. She also broke down crying in the middle of our 5 minute break last week, apparently because he wouldn't speak to her (?!).

One of the other kids is actually pretty smart and gets the material, he looks to be headed toward a 35+, the rest just seem like they're not into it.

Would any of you be willing to read a letter of interest that I wrote? I'm asking in this thread b/c I'm not comfortable with sharing it with just anyone, and you guys seem more knowledgeable and trustworthy. I'd really appreciate it!

if you teach for TPR you can get access to students scoring report and see how they scored in their practice exams, same with Kaplan. You'd be surprised at the scoring distribution, 35+ is pretty rare - you are lucky that he still comes to class, those people are usually quick to stop coming after week 2 (i tell them to not come if they are comfortable, i dont bull**** my class).

The people that always need help will always come to class though. Currently I have 3 classes of 35 for a college MCAT program and 1 class of 23 for a test prep company that I have been with 2 years for. So I think I have lectured for around 200-240 kids and I would say I have only seen one or two person break 35 on AAMC exams and that kid obviously doesnt come to class (I don't take attendance so I don't penalize them). Most hover around 20-31, with very few breaking 30s.

Teaching is the least stressful thing you can do (survey says). If you show your students that you actually care and don't just be a corporate gnome, they will ask for extra help.

At that point, you can swing students (who are usually pretty loaded) into extra private tutoring. If you subtly emphasize in class that if you get the MCAT out of the way on the first try that they could save a lot of money and stress, you can raise your tutoring rate to 75/hr. You can always tell them the sections of the MCAT that you have perfect scores in (they are curious and to the consumer, your credibility is important).

Tutoring on the side goes against your contract, but if you have been teaching, you know that there is absolutely no way that they would care or find out.

I hate teaching for the test prep companies, if you couldn't tell but its awesome to have on your resume to convince other people that you have the experience to teach them privately. Also, please tell your students to do the AAMC exams. The kaplan/TPR exams do not translate to the AAMC score, even if they are harder they are curved way easier.

the tough part of teaching (if there's any, its really overthinking on your part) is just not being deterred that some ppl dont pay attention. you still have to run the class so everyone is satisfied and spend a lot of outside/unpaid time for the people who really care.

Most of the students are taking courses/working a job side by side so its really hard for them to really concentrate on the MCAT - which you think they really should.

Would it be bad if I left to see a movie instead of studying?

bill every single prep hour. you are suppose to bill all of your prep hours (for the entire length of the course) before you teach a single course for TPR. dont let them snake you for it. for us its like 8.50. EGH

PM it to me if you want. Or email... ksmi117 at lsu.edu.

Yeah I've been billing those hours. I only mentioned a 35+ because he seems to understand all the passages, answer/ask a lot of questions, etc.

He may very well end up with a 25, but he seems a lot like me when I was preparing (except I didn't take a class).

yea those kids are great, i wish well for all of them and look forward to them being my colleagues in the future.

i like seeing them happy but if you see the exam grades, you can totally see a pattern. even if you teach the sciences, tell them to focus the most on VR.

what happens is they score higher on VR first. and they get scared about physics and orgo. When they start studying, they commit all of their time on those 2 things and obviously a science section goes up w/ studying. However, they dont get that verbal is flaky and it takes time before things click and breaks plateau (and plateaus eventually). Then they get raped by that section and they have to retake.

The worst question that I get is how many times can you take the MCAT. or if I should take the oct/jan MCAT so I can retake it again. No, study and do it right on the first try, stop scheming.

look into teaching for a post bac program, you cant make much from teaching corporate (i started at 25/hr for test prep and then 35/hr now for lecturing classes). i just dont get enough time. maybe the 3 hours a week or so. Its hard to get more than one or two classes or subjects, so you are really limited.

With a post-bac program, you get paid less/hr but you teach 3x a week and every week or so

I'm horrible at watching movies. I feel like I'm wasting so much time and I get bored easily. I usually only watch ones that got really good ratings. I rarely watch a movie more than once.

I LOVE Kill Bill 1 & 2, however. I could watch them repetitively.
