Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope. I forgot it came on! I'm so out of sync with my TV shows.

So, here's a question for all of you. If hypothetically, I don't get into any schools by March, would you recommend signing up for the MCAT in late May just to get ready for reapplication? I know if I don't get in anywhere, I've got to really boost my score.

that seems like a smart idea, but i still bet you'll get in! i can't see mdapps on my phone-where have you had/will have interviews? i think someone said you have an interview at vandy? if so, it seems like your mcat score can't be that bad at all. are you sure thats the issue or could it be app timing or something else?

I'll PM you my MDapps so you can tell me what you think. You can check it whenever you get to a computer if you want to. I took my MDapps down until I get into a school, or at least, that's what I've told myself.

Congratulations blue!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: This was in all caps because I forgot that stupid rule. I promise I'm more excited than it looks 🙂

Sony's Eye Toy did that for the PS2. I used to have a snowboarding/space game like that. It worked with DDR too by having extra hand movements (similar to the Wii's DDR controller shake). Though, I'm sure with the advance in technology, natal will be more intricate.

Where is bluuuuue!! I miss him. 🙁

i miss him too🙁

looks like me and george cLuuney's and thoughts were paid off like madoff

Dang, you guys really did miss me. That's pretty sweet, yall.

But I find myself a lot in WoW land, unfortundately. Anyone play wanna join me?

This post gets its own response. I hope stoney is still here 🙂

Firstly, I wasn't necessarily arguing that schools would pay for this service. Rather, I said that they would and probably do search and review profiles of applicants.
Well, yes, that we agree on. 🙂 I'm sure that they do commonly search the unprotected facebook profiles. What I was responding to was this:

how can you be confident that a school requesting information directly from facebook isn't given some kind of access us peons don't know about.
To me, that means them getting some sort of special access to security-protected facebook profiles. Obviously, if you post something sketchy on facebook and then don't put security on your profile, you only have yourself to blame. But if you utilize facebook's security settings, I think you should feel relatively confident that you are protected. There's no reason for facebook to give any sort of "special access" to schools if they don't give money.

Secondly, the manpower involved wouldn't be as extensive as you argue. Sure, if one person was in charge of 500 applicants and had to review them within one day's time, then you're right, there simply wouldn't be enough manpower. However, this is most likely not the case. Example: After an interview with a faculty interviewer, the interviewer takes 1 minute to search google and/or facebook for the interviewees name. They take an extra minute to review or skim through what they find. End result? An added 2 minutes to interview time. Not too much manpower involved at all, eh?
I do think you're slightly underestimating the amount of time it would take to skim their profile, but I do admit I hadn't thought of that method.

Thirdly, the point of looking at a facebook page may not be to "raise red flags." Rather, it could be to get a better picture of the applicant and see if they represent themselves consistently through their application and through a social-networking site. That could provide insight into the character of the person without necessarily raising any red flags. So you ask, how much is it really worth to check into facebook? An extra 2 minutes, at probably no extra cost, to confirm the impression you received after interview. I think it would be very worth it in the minds of several interviewers.
Sure. But I don't think an applicant should fear any of that. I'm not really all that anonymous here on SDN, and I wasn't last year. I don't have anything I wouldn't want anyone to see on my facebook, or post anything I care about on here. If I did, I would probably take extra security measures, which some people should do 🙂

From the aspect of facebook, assuming that there was some sort of monetary transaction to grant schools/employers access, then it would make sense financially to allow it. They could profit from such a transaction (think of how many schools/employers might potentially invest in this), and so long as this transaction was kept quiet or under the radar, it wouldn't make a difference to facebook users. Furthermore, you are implying that the transaction would be expensive for schools to use, when really, with low prices to allow access to profiles, facebook could profit greatly from the mere quantity of schools/employers willing to pay a low price for such great access. Besides, as I mentioned already, I am pretty sure it is already within the user agreement that they have rights over the information presented on their website, so they would not be required to notify anybody about such a transaction whatsoever.

Moreover, concerning facebook's perspective, you're assuming here that there is a monetary transaction. If there isn't and interviewers simply view that information or those profiles which are public or semi-public, then facebook would have no reason to notify users. Also, you say that an adcom member would let it slip that they've used Facebook to a student. Now, why would you think this would happen? And even if it did happen, why would you think that this one leak would become public enough to cause Facebook to suffer and invariably not allow these types of transactions (if that's what's happening) to continue? Then, there's the assumption that the student would further reveal this "slip" so that Facebook would even be aware of or care about the problem. If this "slip" occurred, would the student care to reveal that it had happened? Probably not, especially if something embarassing or incriminating had been raised to question in the interview.
Again, anything that had to do schools/employers just looking at the publicly accessible content, I'm sure that happens, and I'm sure it doesn't involve a monetary transaction.

In reference to the bolded, what I meant is that if there WAS some secret agreement between schools and facebook to get access to private info, eventually, somewhere, an adcom member would eventually have THEIR OWN CHILD (not a student) go through the application process and would tell their kid to kill their facebook because of the shady agreement. That kid then tells their friends, who tell their friends... and eventually a group gets made on facebook, and then it's kind of a big deal. At least that's how I see it happening in my head. An adcom probably wouldn't tell any random student, but I can sure see them tellling their own kid.

I think it's challenging to argue either way on this only because we don't know what type of information would be included within that access. For instance, it might be dependent upon the privacy settings of the users. Or, it might allow access to demographic information only (which wouldn't be too useful to schools, but would be to businesses cross-searching and analyzing demographic vs. preferences data).

Sure. But I don't think an applicant should fear any of that. I'm not really all that anonymous here on SDN, and I wasn't last year. I agree. I wouldn't consider myself anonymous by any means, but I am conscientious of the image I choose to project online. I am the same way with my facebook. Nothing on my profile is anything I wouldn't mind talking about in person.

Haha, that's quite a hypothetical situation. But possible, I suppose.

Haha when I was in Cali 2 summers ago there was an earthquake. Everyone freaked and I just stood there confused and fascinated haha

Yeah, I barely felt the earthquake here at work.

It was only a 4.2 though.

Weaksauce.

4.2 is alright, i think anything above 5 would get people talking more. 4.2 is a great time for a 40 though

btw guyski, how many days should i spend in cuzco-machu pichu? weekday or weekend? (the rest of the time in lima)

You won't want to spend much time in Lima. It's really not that cool. There are some cool museums, monuments and such, but it's pretty much your standard big, dirty, Latin-American capital city.

I only spent 2 days there and that was plenty.

You'll want to budget at least 3-4 days for a whole Cusco/Machu Picchu trip. Cusco is awesome, and it takes 8 hours or so to get from Cusco to MP and back. Don't forget that you'll be going from sea-level to ~11,000 ft. elevation. You will be out of breath. Take it slow and easy. Altitude sickness is no joke. Coca tea does help though. (La oja de coca no es droga 🙂 )

If you're looking for additional places to go and have the time/money, I spent another 2 days in Arequipa, which is a cool town at the base of a snow-capped volcano (think Kakariko village from Ocarina of Time, if you played it).

I spent like 3-4 days in Puno and Lake Titicaca (floating islands, the people speak Quechua). That's worth seeing.

But don't skimp on time in Cusco. It's seriously one of the coolest cities I've ever been to. Really captures my imagination. And you can do cool things from there as day-trips, like white-water rafting. I think they might also have some Amazon day/two-day trips from there. You'd have to look into it though.

ahhhh I just signed up to do an fMRI study. I hope I get it! They don't even need to pay me lol I just want to see ma braiiiiin!

Scapermoya, you missed the epic debate between Spurs and myself regarding facebook!

Wow, I'm still Number 1 poster in this thread by a long shot. Come on, someone, overtake me.

Scapermoya, you missed the epic debate between Spurs and myself regarding facebook!

it took a while to read, you verbose peoples!

i think my favorite point made was that if there was some sort of agreement, then we would have heard about it by now.

as spurs said, information wants to be free. too many people apply to medical school every year for it not to get out. especially because of the fact that so many children of doctors try to become doctors. I don't think the hypothetical situation spurs suggested (with the parent ADCOM member) is far fetched (pokemon?!) in the least.

to be completely honest, i buried my facebook for several reasons. it was too easy of a distraction, people I didn't necessarily want to talk to from high school kept friending me, ex girlfriends, etc.

i'm kinda happy i don't have it anymore

Those are all good reasons too 👍

Hmm? I've always rooted for the Longhorns.

I guess I just hear you talk about a lot of different teams. change was the wrong word.

jealous, med student! also, I have the sniffles.

off to 3 day suit broker! gunna get something black. you know, to stand out from other interviewees....

WHOA! You changed your avatar! I think I've always known you to have the thumbs-up guy.

Haha thumbs-up guy is the Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich, and it's a pretty recognizable moment for basketball fans 😀

I'm changing it for one day for the championship game to support the Longhorns. Then I'll go back to something Spurs-related, probably the same old thing, sans Santa hat. 🙂

Hi scapermoya. :hello:

Some new faces here while I was gone. Nice.👍

Hmmm... I think you should vary your avatar more. Maybe something un-sports-related?
