Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What about radonc dr yoda

I like the $. I like the time. The technology is pretty cool too. I don't like the threat of becoming irrelevant and their vunerable reimbursment (heavy reliance on very few, very specialized things) although this doesn't kill it for me since I'm fairly willing to take career risks. What does kill it is that it seems like it's impossible to escape academia in that field. I know most of them do go into PP, but from my understanding rad onc PP has an absurdly academic culture, and that's just not for me.

a. You cheated.
b. The system is tired.
c. Something else.
d. It is destiny.

Chocolate chip cookies for the person who names the movie that's from.

Also, I know where I went wrong. I said I want to interact with other Drs./healthcare people. I meant like in the OR or something. 🙄

slumdog!

...and coincidentally, i just took cookies out of the oven

Shorter quiz...

1 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
2 Radiology - Diagnostic
3 Psychiatry
4 Pathology  😱 😕 :scared: 🙁

Seriously, this needs to stop. Like now.

Nevermind, I'm a *******. I thought higher number=more compatible. So much for reading directions, although the new list isn't looking any more promising:

Colon and Rectal Surgery <= what is this!? NO RECTUMS FOR ME.
Gastroenterology
Sports Medicine
Otolaryngology
Orthopaedic Surgery
Vascular Surgery
Urology
General Surgery
Neurological Suregery
Thoracic Surgery
Plastic Surgery

Same, Heme/Onc is fascinating to me, I'm definitely considering it. I need to shadow an oncologist sometime...

That reminds me, I need to check out the provided shadowing doctors for the premed club. One of the only things it's good for.

And ksmi, when you read this, you may need to think about talking to your LSU ortho team doctor guy. Is he the one giving the AED lecture Wednesday?

Anesthesiology
Gastroenterology
Otolaryngology
Radiation Oncology
Orthopaedic Surgery
Sports Medicine
Neonatal - Perinatal Medicine
Colon and Rectal Surgery
Pediatric Surgery
Ophthalmology
Urology
Dermatology
Neurological Suregery
Plastic Surgery
Emergency Medicine
Thoracic Surgery

Excellent. My fields are all surgery heavy. Although anesthesiology sounds like fun too, it came out number 1 for me.

AHHHHHHH i should have known thaaaaaaat

edit: this is regarding slumdog

edit2: goddamn cookies sound good right now

Ahh I see... yeah I shadowed a radonc DO for 6 months and it was anything from an academic culture at his PP.... I loved it.

You are correct! I'm feeling generous so here's three:

Ask bobsmith for some. Sharing is caring.

I want to shadow some different fields to get an idea of what they actually do.

Interesting because this was my problem for the last 2 years, and it probably mattered more then because I needed it on AMCAS.

I think shadowing creates small feelings of passion towards certain fields and obviously on the flip side dislike towards others.... I feel like I still haven't gotten a full idea of what it would feel like to actually be in said specialties though.... maybe 3rd year

3rd year seems to be the general time.

Plus in med school we'll have waaay more and better shadowing opportunities. At least in my case, I don't know about yall.

I guess people generally decide in 3rd year. Not me though. I'm 100% certain I must be a surgeon. That kind of sounds gunnerish, but I have personal reasons why though.

I was doing some shadowing over break and talking to a med student on her neurosurg rotation. She was standing like 10 feet from the patient. How can someone want to do neurosurgery for the rest of their lives after being "exposed" to it for only 2 weeks? I don't get it. I think many residents, especially in any surgery, get a rude awakening during intern year.

To add: You hold a retractor and talk to some residents and attendings and that's it? Is anyone else concerned about this?

That's cool. Be a general surgeon and save America, please?

My hope list will either be overjoyed or in flames by the 3rd week of Feb lol

 You should be good and not have to go home.

Those quizzes really want you to do path, huh?

It squeaked by thoracic surg and plastics by one point in the UVA test. The other one said colon/rectal surgery so I don't trust that one either.

lol... so you're telling me you don't want to disimpact bowels before every procedure, floaton?

wtf... how much more glorious could medicine get???

Good night ladies and gentlemen... I'm officially pooped. See ya tmrw

Colon/rectal may sound nasty but I bet it's a growing field in the upcoming years as our population ages and colon cancer is I think the 3rd most common type. They make pretty good $$$, but is it worth it, right?

Speaking of cancer rates, you know Delaware is #1 in nearly everything for cancer? Louisiana is #2 for men.

I'm trying to be helpful to our fellow pre-meds and providing quality replies to their questions. GOSH.

Also, now I understand how you all rack up your post count.

what if medical school was like the giver and you just got assigned a medical specialty during your white coat ceremony

Randomly assigned? that would be scary. Could be🙂 or:cry:.

I dont think they were randomly assigned to you -- they were given based off a thorough evaluation of your skills

although I guess then it would make more sense for you to get assigned to your specialty after medical school

a sorting hat would be sweet. the hat would be like "not neurosurgery, eh? are you sure? you could be great, you know, and neurosurgery will help you on the way to greatness...no? ok then...PEDIATRICS!"

The energy bill was $50 each and the water was $22 each. I'm pretty sure they would charge us even if nobody was there, but it would be miniscule. If I do what I'm planning, I will pay $28 for energy - which would more than cover the flat rate, especially since I wasn't there using anything.

Dang, that's really expensive. But yeah, I think your plan of $28 sounds reasonable.

i dont get what the point of memorizing all the structures are

but i would do it by groups (ie non poplar) and and then look at the pH of each hydrogen and you can work out the logic of the structures rather than strictly try to grind it out (i dont have the attention span for that)

That's what I did too. Although I have no idea how to do it now.

Steinumstein, and everyone else too, take this test and report back:
http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

Not a fan of that one. There's one that's better.

This is the one I was talking about. My top 10:
Neonatal - Perinatal Medicine
Gastroenterology
Anesthesiology
Vascular and Interventional Radiology
Colon and Rectal Surgery
Sports Medicine
Otolaryngology
Orthopaedic Surgery
Thoracic Surgery
Neurological Suregery

1. If this were made into a tv show, TLC would be all over it.

2. I read The Giver in 6th grade and therefore I feel ancient now.

3. So I have to get something done before I go to bed...This was a good discussion today. We should do this again sometime.

4. 😴
