Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think most people are worried about the fact that Medicare/caid cuts are built in, but so is an expansion of these programs to cover more people.

Personally, I'm more worried about how much this thing is going to cost, and how much further in debt our country will be in 10 years because of it.

 thought it was supposed to cut the deficit by some billions or something in the long run. I'm so confused about what is actually passing right now, there have been so many permutations of this thing...😕

:hello:

21% medicare cut will undoubtedly hurt us. And so what if it covers more people, in the end, the private practice docs can only see so many of em with the diminished returns

This might be a dumb question but HOW exactly will physicians now receive a big cut in pay/salary?

This seems to be the big point made AGAINST the bill but I've never seen anything actually spelled out on the wages of future physicians.

More medicaid patients. And the fact that the bill is ~50% paid for by medicare cuts. It also greatly increases the federal goverments power in health care, and they have a long history of trying to make up for their gross mismanagement of medicare by cutting doctors fees (so not a cut, but looks like it's setting the stage for one).

On the subject of medicare cuts, there is a bunch of money already appropriated to do something about the SGR formula. They originally had it in the bill, but the problem is it in the bill isn't budget neutral. So they took it out and are supposed to pass it as a seperate bill so now we have "budget neutral healthcare reform". (so it's basically counting partially on the 21% cut boogieman that isn't going to happen and thus we don't really have as big a cut coming as some are saying, at least not immediatly).

I agree with JJ my main issue is it's huge cost coupled with the fact it doesn't look set to deliver much.

Maybe we could stop paying billions of dollars to kill people on the other side of the planet.

That would be a pretty good start to reining in expenses.

(For the record, I'm extremely upset with Obama's stance on Afghanistan too. This isn't a party-issue for me.)

The deficit reduction is just dishonest accounting, see my above post. Big picture this bill is already set to increase the deficit.

I don't disagree. I don't think we need a military presence in any other country.

Just because you now have health insurance doesn't mean you have adequate access to medical services, right? I mean, it doesn't really help if it takes an hour to get to the nearest doctor. Also, the US is very specialty heavy, whereas other countries have at least 50% primary care doctors.

i guess at least it happened early/before medical school

we can choose residency accordingly....

I need some info from you guys - especially the Yale/Penn applicants.

I'm a member of this other forum, Tigerdroppings.com, an LSU site. I frequent the OT Lounge, where middle-aged cubicle workers do nothing but post all day at their jobs and act like douches. Here's the story...

On March 10th, 12:10am, this guy posts "I'm in Russia ahora. I applied to med school several months ago. I got into five. I need help deciding which ones. LSU Shreve, Penn, Yale, Mayo, and Baylor. Where should I go and why."

Now, I didn't realize this until a couple of days later, but Yale did not release decisions until March 11th (per SS thread) and Penn until the 14th (per SS thread). Now from what it looked like on those threads, nobody (except MD/PhD) heard anything until then. A couple of days later I realized that I should have called him out on his bs.

Today, he posts a thread about healthcare reform and how he is happy about it, blah blah, and everybody is going off on him because he is a total douche and lied about reading the whole bill. He also seems to be an elitist. I called him out today and mentioned that Yale and Penn hadn't released any decisions when he made his first thread, and he said March 1st. I referenced (not explicitly) the people on SDN, none of which heard anything until the dates listed above - then the thread was whacked before I got a response.

So who's right? Is he full of bs, or was he right? Sorry for the novel.

Eh, maybe he just said he got into all 5 for simplicity's sake in asking for advice.

Or maybe he was just really confident that he would get in.

yeah. at least based on what you've written here, he's full of it. weird thing to lie about, though

That is not in the bill.

Honestly, I am so sick of repeating that but the medicare cuts have been on the books for YEARS. They are NOT a part of this bill, and will likely be lessened or undone when the AMA starts lobbying for them in the coming weeks.

It's such a simple argument to make, "You just expanded coverage to 30 million people and didn't add a single physician, how about not cutting their reimbursements".

The reason it wasn't included is it would affect the CBO report on the total cost of the bill, something that no one wanted.

maybe he interviewed and just assumed that he got into penn and yale?

That's what I was thinking.

I say the entire 2014 thread signs up on TD and starts a new thread calling him out, then everyone else replies and supports that he is a BS'er. He'll never live it down and be shamed forever.

I can hear your evil laugh all the way from here.

I hate when my caffeine intake to keep me awake during the day backfires and keeps me wide awake past when I should be sleeping.

Hasn't that happened to you, like, every single day of this semester Sammich? Maybe you should try a different routine.

Here's the original thread, I don't have the one about healthcare from today since it was wiped from the forum. See if you can find my responses . Man, I wish I would have called him out back then.

Me, too - that seems to be our problem often.

man, when that SP episode asked about the hankerchief, I was like what hankerchief? I had to rewind to make sure there wasn't one, haha.

I only got 3 hours of sleep last night with my breaking lent and all.... Not my fault! I had to do stuff today. 🙁

ok.. well I suppose it IS my fault.. but whatever.

So. much. caffeine. today.

I think that's how I pulled 2 hours at the gym without dying.

I'm glad yall support me on this douche forum thingy. It might be one of those "Somebody's wrong ON THE INTERNET" type situations, but it bothers me that someone would lie like that.

He also seems to lie about some other stuff, too - so that's why I'm thinking he's lying. Plus, I'm going to side with the entire Penn and Yale threads on when decisions were released versus this one guy.

That's ok Sammich. I just be playin witcha. 3 hours is rough, though. Anything less than 4.5 for me I start getting a little loopy.

Seems like every single year I underestimate the Big 10 going into the tournament.

It must be football season carrying over.

I know what you mean, though. I totally underestimated Purdue without Hummel.

Dude it totally is a holdover from football season.

I guess that's what I should expect having not following college basketball's regular season at all.

friend of mine's dad has his own private practice as a cardiologist and already said he is going to cut his patient # down. should be interesting.

My parents' PCP is going to/has already started to charge extra each year to be a top priority patient.

while at vandy, they were animate about supporting the bill because all their doctors are salaried anyway. as someone who was never interest in private practice, this seems to make sense to me. maybe more hospitals will go to salary system?

granted, i understand that if you are interested in private practice, this bill blows. chunks.

And if they are on-call or work overtime then they get paid extra?
