Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So good morning everyone!

I officially got waitlisted at Miami yesterday. I'm okay with that though because I knew I was interviewing for a waitlist spot when I went. Maybe if I send them a few really nice letters, they will take me in? 🙂

Heck yea, bbl and i will be channeling our positive Miami energy toward you as well 😀

The Costly F-35: The Saga of America's Next Fighter Jet (Time Magazine)

Ha, and it was supposed to be a low cost alternative to the F22

I choose to believe the doc I shadow who said:
"you will do great anywhere, we just have to get you back for residency"
much nicer thought than the one that two weeks of d--- hell left me with.

Yea, their loss! The people will make your experience, and I'm sure your experience will be great wherever you go since you'll make the people around you's experiences great 🙂

nope. and he'll get zero bipartisan support in Congress for the rest of his term. But he'll get his way anyway. Checks and balances my glutes.

 You say this as if he has gotten bipartisan support thus far! The Republicans have been nothing but whiny brats for the past two years. I'm hoping they make serious gains in November just so they stop their nonstop crying on Fox News. 😉

On the one hand, I don't want the extra stress.. but on the other it might be good to have that extra push. Mainly because I pretty much need to get AOA so I can get into ophtho.

Yeah, it could definitely be a plus if you're looking at matching into something really competitive like ophtho... at this point, I'm not looking at anything surgical, and my top two interests of internal med and neuro aren't that competitive.

i lucked out. all places i'm considering are P/F unranked.

w00t

The only place I'm seriously considering that isn't P/F unranked is Pitt, and they're H/P/F and supposedly pretty low-stress, according to our tour guide. 🙄

Well what's interesting is that even though FSU is graded, everyone is super helpful and it's still not that competitive between people. It's a super warm atmosphere there.

Sammie,

There was a list published of the top 10 things program directors look for in competitive residencies. Published by some journal (maybe academic medicine) I will look for it.

First year "graded" courses was very very low on the list. But I agree with you on the "push" factor. However,

P/F if you are motivated, will allow you to take a boards perspective during courses which doesnt always mean a higher grade in the class (some prof wants you to study what HE thinks is important)

My thinking on this...

Isn't it true that your first two year's grades don't really matter that much anyway? So it really don't matter what grading system a school uses does it?

Stein, don't miss your 1k post!

I wouldn't mind H/P/F, I just hate that the H/HP/P/F is a bs cover for ABCF - so why not make it out that way?

Baylor is my last shot at P/F. :xf:

😵 can you send me that article if you find it?

It's more for our own sanity I think.

I know I would be having a meltdown if I were in the P range and lots of my peers were in the H/HP range.

I'm kind of a competitive person though.

Thanks, I'll be sure to make it special! 😀

VCU is percentage is that any diff than grades? & even if schools are completely P/F wouldn't there be an internal ranking for residency?!

Washu is pf the first year and then graded. I'm like you Sammy. Trying to make it a positive. Also, I rally wish I could just say I'm going there.

I don't mind that.

2nd year is when you learn the cool important stuff anyway.

And I would start getting pissed if I was trying really hard and only getting P while others were getting HP/H. I'm secretly competitive.

Ditto for me, I could tell myself that the grades don't matter, but I'd be pissed if I was sitting at a P or HP in most of my classes and I knew others were cranking out honors left and right. Just the way I am. 😳

you're waiting for BU too?! less than a week :luck:

TICKKK TICKK!!!

Oh,

My point was that for most people grades do keep them accountable. But if you are motivated and want to take a boards approach to your studies then the P/F is kind and the grades scale can get in your way! --> More to the point, USMLE matters WAY WAY WAY more for programs then first two years scores. Why the AMA/AMCAS etc promote P/F system. That and less competition.

Ha, yea, I'm the same way. Oh our vanity

I haven't been able to get a good answer on whether LSU's H/HP/P/F system is straight up based on percentage or curved.

I think that's bs if you get 90% and just have it be a P because the class did really well, too.

At my interview, the WashU students I talked to really liked the grading system, they said it pushed them to work harder second year and really learn the material. As long as the curriculum is in line with the boards, you might as well blast through it and be ready to rock Step 1. 👍

Ok I guess it's about that time for me to ask the stupid questions about when to study and whatnot for the USMLE's... When do you guys plan on starting?

wat it do sammy?! i hear you had a logic test, hope it went well :xf:
Meh, it was okay. Definitely not as easy as the first two were for me. But because I haven't made it to a lot of classes I HAVE to get an A on it or I could be in trouble. And I'm not sure I did that.

it wasn't the final was it?

Yeah P/F schools usually rank. Also, the grades you "should" be getting count twords points in getting into AOA too. So its not all peaches.

MDog, Nope, not the final. But I've accidentally slept through way more classes than we're allowed. So he could theoretically auto fail me. .. but he has a thing in the syllabus where if we get over a 93 on all the tests we get an auto A regardless of attendance/homework. I have a 92.5 (which is close enough I could argue) and a 106.. So I need over a 93 on this and the final... lol.

I think I got more like an 85 though.

So that could be interesting.

Since I need this class to graduate.

Thanks for that Bob!

So Mandible, grades are pretty low, but things like academic awards, class rank, AOA, and honors grades are high up there...

So basically "be awesome" lol.
