Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hopkins was very clear that they do not match or adjust packages based on merit aid offers from other schools, but let's hope WashU is nicer 😀 (seriously, the Hopkins financial aid office killed the happy buzz of revisit Friday with their no-nonsense, you-guys-should-be-willing-to-pay-anything-for-the-privilege-to-go-here, why-are-you-asking-stupid-questions attitude)
I suppose when they've got hundreds of kids who are willing to pay anything to go there, though, they can get away with that sort of attitude.

But seriously, Baltimore? blech.

despicably understandable

it just seemed so random to me. is that even a thing? whatever. i'm not gonna go near that thread.

It's a pretty controversial issue, but I've seen a lot of discussion about it in the past couple of years (in places other than SDN, I meant).

She said Hopkins didn't but wash u did.

I think neither did.

At any school most people go into peds and IM. That's a reality of it. If you are a clinician and do not intend to do research, does it matter where you went to medical school? Not really. A JHU MD does not magically add a couple hundred grand to your salary.

Exactly, for a lot of people, it doesn't matter. For some people it does. If you want to do academics, school name is important. I had to make the same decision ksmi is making now during my cycle, ultimately I decided to go to my state school (which is still top 25, and top 10 in the field i'm going into) over top academic programs like Penn and Stanford, and there are lots of times I'm second guessing my decision, when I look at residency programs I'm interested in where every single person in them is from a top 10, and matched candidates average 260+ step and aoa. When people talk about most ppl getting their first choice, there's a lot of self-selection involved and if they didn't get an interview at a program, they can't put it as a choice anyways.

oh that's kind of a turn off. but i guess ppl find schools that they are happy with and there are hundreds of ppl willing to take a slot. good to know jhu wasn't for me, mutual rejection.

Very true! But I def. think they could still be nicer about it. At the HMS revisit the financial aid officers were *so* nice...even though they basically said the same thing (no matching merit money, etc.), they were super friendly and seemed really dedicated to working with students. I didn't walk away from their info session feeling like I was viewed as a pain in the university's ass

yeah, i agree -- there's definitely nicer ways and meaner ways of saying "buzz off"

i'm also finding that i'm noticing a lot of little things about how the students interact with the administration at different schools. i know it should probably have no bearing on which place i eventually choose, but i find it interesting

Listen to the nice people. We obviously know what's best for you.:nod:

Seriously, though, we'd love to have you here at Case.😀👍

Woohoo!!

I'm probably going to Case. I don't care if I'll be in debt up to my ears, I want to go to the school I like better.

personally tho, i believe ppl speak through actions and not words.

in that case, HMS still wins for having a significant debt reduction initiative for middle income families 👍 and for sitting down with me for about a half an hour to run through various scenarios of what my financial aid could look like depending on my parents' changing incomes in future years... i can't say enough good things about harvard financial aid (their undergrad program is fantastic too)

showoff

though god hath blessed us with good financial aid offices, he continues to punish us with the harvard registrar. harvard must be the only school where course registration is still done by hand by little old ladies in the registrar's office rather than electronic filing

that sounds so....romantically historical? it matches with my impressions of the cool old brick buildings and wrought iron fencing.

but think of the little old ladies! what would they do if they cant do this anymore? those damn computerizers, dey too ger jer!!!

harvard giveth, harvard taketh away

😉 the financial aid office definitely deserves the praise. for serious
i would kill to see for myself. 🙁

everyone should be exposed to the glory of south park. i wish i had a hole in my face for south parks glory to shine through 😛

american dads great too 😀

Hopkins left me with about $20K, and WashU left me with $59K each year with no loans covering them.

whoa. so what does one do in that situation? private loans? or are grad PLUS loans still an option? i honestly don't understand how this stuff works 😳

could you have just not filled out info re: ur parents? and how the heck is it ur fault?

Beg for money from the 'rents since it's their fault I'm in this situation anyway?

haha. well, i really hope washu is willing to negotiate with you. totally sucks that you ended up in this situation.

wait, on the financial aid packages i've gotten so far, there has been the option of replacing the family contribution with stafford or grad plus loans. does that not exist for you? i mean, it still sucks, but at least it's something.

it should be a moot point cause she shouldve gotten full merit schollie in the first place

Woohoo!!

Cool, Case for the win!

Hey, dingyi, are you also going to Case or is it Miami?

prolly miami, since my preferences for schools isnt that strong so money matters more.

Nothing like that on mine. But they aren't exactly organized very well.

You should have access to at least 8500 in sub + 32000 in unsub + remainder in GradPlus direct from fed gov't. Has nothing to do with the school. The only way you wouldn't be eligible is if you personally earned a boatload. Call them up and inquire about this. The school itsel cannot limit the amount you borrow from the gov't, especially since the new law requiring all schools to be direct lenders. No school should have a portion of the CoA uncovered. If it's all loans, it breaks down by subsidized, unsubsidized, an GradPLUS. All from the federal government and all need based, based on your personal EFC w/o parents.

EDIT: damn iPhone, I apologize lol

haha, you can go chill in Miami beach whenever you want to hit the party scenes. I'm jealous.

haha yea, the beach is like a 10 min drive away, i'll prolly be skipping classes to go to the beach 😎

you know, i'm pretty sure sinai rejected you by accident.

what about me? i really wanted sinai too, but they didn't even give me an interview 🙁

do you think I can appeal right now? I was rejected way back in November.

 it would be so fun if you came here though. are you staying on downstate's waitlist, or whatever they call it?

but think of the little old ladies! what would they do if they cant do this anymore? those damn computerizers, dey too ger jer!!!

🤣 i love south park, can't wait for this week's episode

harvard giveth, harvard taketh away

i'm rooting for you! if you are interested in HST, and if you happen to know any faculty who are affiliated with HST in any way (current faculty, alumni), you should get them to write a letter for you. i think they take letters from their own pretty seriously.

i feel like sinai cheated me. i took a tour around their school and i found an ipod touch in the MS2 lecture hall. as the good samaritan that i am, i returned it, but sinai didn't return the favor 🙁

dw, pay 'em back for me, steal someone's ipod pleeeeeeeease

i wish that was true for NP 🙁 my PI from 2006 was a NP faculty member and clearly that letter got me nowhere. or maybe my app sucked so much that it didn't matter how good the letter was
