Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd rather see bron bron go to Boston than NYC.

I'm surprised none of my buddies put a hole in the wall after the BS postgame dap being given by the cavs.... like we didn't even care.

I swear they quit on Mike Brown and were defiant, but come on, the city deserves more than that. When is the last time you've seen the team with the best record in the league get knocked out of the playoffs and look so calm at the end of it all....

that team needs some leaders, somebody to rile up ppl's emotion. maybe they should try to get tebow?

am I the only one that expects an email reply as soon as I send an email out?

No, when I send an email to a professor I expect a reply in 2 hours or less. It's part of their job to check their email multiple times a day. What else are they doing in office hours when nobody shows up?

I need some words from the wise. How big is a $35K difference after interest and stuff? Worth it to go OOS?

Looks like I'm getting a new computer for graduation. 😀 and 👎 at the same time.

I was pricing laptops, and my God 😱 are Macs expensive. I was looking at them just for s&g, but I finally confirmed that you pay literally 2x as much for a Mac as you do for BETTER (and probably 2x) performance and specs on a PC. The laptop I'll probably get has the same specs at $720 as a Macbook does at $2000.

I've always been in AZ and really want to leave. I'd actually love to move to the Midwest or East Coast area later...so maybe going to Jeff would make it easier to stay in that region? Not sure.

The difference might be even more because I could do clinical rotations in Phoenix instead of Tucson (where the school's at) and leech off of my parents thereby saving maybe another 10 or 15k.

I think Macs are way overpriced. Some of the new Sony Vaio models have really good specs for half the price! (I love Sony!)

If I was in your situation, I would probably leave. Then again, I would have paid a ton more to attend 4 of my 5 OOS interview schools.

assuming the 35k is spread to 4 years(so 9000 per year), with 4 years of residency and 7.5% interest, it comes out to 57.8k upon completion of residency. whether it's worth it or not depends on you 🙂

anyone got any suggestions for where to find a solid 42" 1080p on the cheap?

i'm thinking of getting a dlp tv, it's huge and really cheap, though not as flat and cool looking as lcd/plasma/etc.

Which calculator did you use for that? I don't know how accurate those loan calculators online are since they don't account for forbearance and deferment and all that crap.

And thanks guys for the help!

No. I hate when I have to wait a day+ for a response!!!

I was told by an adcom faculty member that under 50K (before interest) difference, go to whatever school you want. Above that, follow the $.

i think if you really want a change of scenery, it might be worth it. it also depends on the magnitude of your debt. keep in mind that if it'll take you say 5 years to pay off the UA debt, then that $35k difference will be paid off after 5 years after residency, which means that it'll become $83k at the time.

lol i just typed the numbers and formulas in excel. deferment doesn't affect it, so it's not really a problem. if there are other parameters i haven't considered, you can tell me and i can revise the formula. 😀

Yeah, it's like 189k vs. 222k. With UofA, I won't have to borrow Grad Plus because I have a small savings I could dip into. No way can I cover Jeff.

thank you for your ninja luck in the Pritzker thread, btw, Met! lol

Better? I can't decide if it should be WashU or Wash U so I just wrote out the whole thing.

I thought about doing the colors thing, but they are green and red. Too christmas-y.

yea, both are pretty hefty chunks of change!

damn, looks like I need to be stopping by my Fry's more often!

yea dude that's a pretty good deal, fatwallet is def a good site too. it's usually that, dealnews, and dealsea for me. the only problem is that that deal was posted on 4/25, so it might not be there anymore.

Yeah, I would buy one now, but then I'll have to move it later. =/ Fatwallet.com is awesome!
Well my Fry's ran out of that model because I definitely found that one yesterday and they had one left (the display model) 🙁 This is after I was 5 hours late on a Tiger Direct deal for the LG 42LH50 for $650 😡

I'm just going to make frequent stops at Fry's

Dingy's calculations are accurate. Keep in mind that most student loans don't capitalize the interest till after you graduate (so no interest on top of interest - which really sucks). But... it's unlikely that you can pay off the interest when it capitalized, so if you don't pay it off immediately (well, the interest anyway) upon graduating, it can start to add up pretty quickly.

Usually the recommendation is if your parents/family can pay off the interest on your loans before they capitalize onto the principal, you save a hell of a lot of money.

anyone got any suggestions for where to find a solid 42" 1080p on the cheap?

http://slickdeals.net/

my go to spot 🙂

Gah! It would be so much easier flipping a coin!

you still can 😀

I was told by an adcom faculty member that under 50K (before interest) difference, go to whatever school you want. Above that, follow the $.

(all my talk here is after interest)
This is correct. You have to consider that even 58K after graduation is not that much considering the earning potential of most doctors / general cost of medical school. Now if you are just looking at 58K in debt, that's not much and you'll be fine. If it's an incremental 58K more on top of your existing debt, it could be an issue. If it's going to double your debt, that could be an issue. But I still say if you are getting a med school education for a total of 116K - that's a pretty good deal!

In general, I'd say < 40K (pre interest) is pretty inconsequential - all things considered. (If your family can pay the interest off before it capitalizes, I'd say going up to 50K pre-interest even is more than fine).

[I'm fiscally conservative, so I tend to be a little more... er... frugal than most]

i think if you really want a change of scenery, it might be worth it. it also depends on the magnitude of your debt. keep in mind that if it'll take you say 5 years to pay off the UA debt, then that $35k difference will be paid off after 5 years after residency, which means that it'll become $83k at the time.

This goes back to what I was saying before about how interest capitalized and then gaining interest is the devil! 😡

My 2 cents?

Ask yourself where you want to go (ignoring money) - then ask yourself if the $ difference will stop you from going there. I say this because I'd consider the $ diff to be borderline inconsequential 🙂 But it's pretty close to that border! :meanie:

i thought their color had yellow in it? idk why i thought that. it looks good anyway 👍

That's a 17.5% raise in your cost. That's a good chunk of change. But I'd stay still border line 🙂 You can always go back to do your residency/rotations in AZ near your parents if you want to save money post-school.

I still say - forget the money; see where you want to go, write down the reasons and then ask if the money will keep you from going there.

If all else fails... flip a coin 👍

Just remember though 4 years is a long time. It flies by yes; but it's a long time still 🙂

Haha, my parents make less than I do hourly right now, so it'll definitely be all me.

just make frequent stops on sites like fatwallet and dealnews, you can find some pretty sweet deals there! for example, this isn't too bad if you're living on the cheap:

grrrr I was supposed to go to bed at 1am at the latest.

It's now 2:30. I'm a ***** 😡 I have no hopes of resetting my sleep cycle back to normal do I...

Anyway, off to bed finally 🙂 g'nite ya'll.

Seattle is pretty bad. the Mariners won somewhat recently but they lost the Sonics

Yeah losing the Sonics hurt bad. Why did that happen again?

Looks like I'm getting a new computer for graduation. 😀 and 👎 at the same time.

Yeah, from what I've seen Macs are usually like 1.75x as expensive as PCs for laptops, and like 2x as expensive for desktops.

Haha, my parents make less than I do hourly right now, so it'll definitely be all me.

heh well then we are in similar boats - in that my parents aren't going to be able to help me at all; and I'm going to have insane debt as well (~300K whoo!).

I figure if we are going to be broke - we might as well shoot for the moon while we are at it 👍

im gonna wait a year and get a large LED

deduct it as a business expense for my tenant

is the LED's picture really that much better?
