WASHINGTON — Even Shaquille O'Neal got overshadowed by a bit of controversy at the spelling bee.
O'Neal walked onstage Friday at the Scripps National Spelling Bee and challenged last year's winner to a spell-off, but the presence of the NBA great didn't generate anywhere near the passion created by a decision to suspend the semifinals so that there would be enough spellers left for ABC's primetime broadcast Friday night.
The result was that 10 spellers advanced to the championship broadcast, including six who didn't have to spell a word in the interrupted round. Essentially, the alphabetical order of the U.S. states determined which spellers got to move on the marquee event.
"I would rather have five finalists, than five who didn't deserve it," said 13-year-old Elizabeth Platz of Shelbina, Miss., one of the four spellers who had spelled a word correctly before the round was stopped. "I think it was unfair."
Elizabeth's remarks were greeted with applause from parents in the hotel ballroom where the bee is held.
It's one of the pitfalls of the growing popularity of the bee, which has to yield to the constraints of its television partners. There were 19 spellers left at the start of the round, which was too many for prime time. But when the round turned out to be brutal — nine of the first 13 misspelled — ABC was on the verge of having too few.
"I don't feel bad at all for giving these children the opportunity," bee director Paige Kimble said. "Do I wish we could give it to 19? Yes, certainly, but that's not practical in a two-hour broadcast window. We know it's unpopular and we don't like to do it, but sometimes you can get into a position where that's exactly what you have to do."

At what point did you get in? I'd wait until it's really on sale (as in $30ish).

We'd need another financial system meltdown for that.

its around 40 now, 30 is a 25% drop (which indicates the market drops ~ that number)

its been widely reported that BP doesnt suffer economically from the oil spill much

It's closer to $37 now. Might be a good time to pick up some more

Edit: Looks like there is a chance they'll withhold their dividend.

Finally got my last decision from the interview season. WL @ Einstein. Just withdrew. Cyaaa

I still don't understand the point of the spelling bee. Wow, kids can memorize how to spell words. Good for them. 🙄

In a way. Also weird though... Withdrawing always feels 'wrong' after paying tons of $, secondary, traveling, etc.

i wouldn't know what it feels like but after all the rejections i think we deserve to have a little turn of the tables 😉

i know it would be tough though considering how much you fall in love with the school after interviewing, waiting, etc..

I did a sell higher and buy back lower so I still have some of it.

Been trading other gulf exposed companies this week. Yay! oil spill.

The div thing is just two whinny politicians, it doesn't really have any grounds. They could cut it, but they really don't have a reason too as of now. The same group has been harassing rig to cut theirs for 3 weeks now.

Haha yeah... No problem with Einstein though really. Personally, I liked it better on paper than in person.

If anyone sees "Get Him to the Greek", let me know how it is. It's getting decent reviews.

i picked up my kitty from the vet. she had a glazed look in her eyes and a bloody mouth. 🙁

Am I the only one who :scared: if ksmi doesn't post for 24+ hours? It just feels so.... odd 🙂 Been so used to it for like what? A year now? And all of a sudden ... poof!

no one really posts anymore i dont even notice. 🙂

My posting is probably going to be lighter indefinetly now. Work( although I do computer a lot at work)+ distractions this summer. and I'm going to actually give M2 my all:laugh: so I'll def be spending more time studying than I did this past year.

but but i'm not ready to let go yet :scared:

heh I'm a hippocrite (yes I know how to spell hypocrite, it's more fun to spell it as hippo-crite :meanie: ); come mid July I'll go poof too.

Well actually this will probably be more apt: :boom:

Really not cool for the Stanley Cup Finals to switch to Versus for tonight after being on NBC for a while. 😡 I knew there was a game tonight but was dissuaded after looking at the guide and it wasn't on NBC. Now I've missed half of the game. 😡

I don't think I will go poof from here. It's just the way I roll. It's too much of a habit for me to be on here, so I will continue and maybe I can be more of a help as a med student.

:hello:

Long day today...

So why is there a question mark in the our thread's title now?

that's a good... question 🤣

you knew someone was going to do that L

I was wondering about it too... I thought I was going crazy; and that maybe the ? had always been there in the title

Har har har... And no, it's definitely not always been there! I remember there was a time when GoSpursGo was surreptitiously removing exclamation marks from our title and adding them to the 2013 thread... I am guessing something similar is happening!

Well that's not really making me want to change it back :meanie:
:hello: Spurs!! I haven't seen you around here in a while!
:hello:

Yeah, it's equal parts studying more and also getting involved in things outside of class cutting into my time to hang out with you guys. But I try to pop in from time to time to see how everyone's doing 🙂

Soooo... how is everything, everyone?

Well that's nice! What types of things are you getting involved with? Research? Community service?

Things are going well here for me. I'm just super busy... Way busier than I thought I would be right now.

So it was you!!!

Not necessarily; just that I'm acknowledging that I have the power to fix it, without outing whoever changed it in the first place 😛

I'm busy probably in equal parts hanging out with my new friends (I always take a little while to find real, new friends, but I like them now that I've found them 🙂 ), and recently I signed up to start planning Baylor's annual Charity Ball for next year. We're aiming for somewhere between 600-1000 people to come next February, so the planning is going to be pretty intense (as well as, you know, the whole actually raising money part aside from the party itself) 😱

And yes, some of my time is going towards studying more. I did better last block than I had ever done before 🙂

What are you doing that's keeping you so busy?

Yeah yeah. I guess you didn't necessarily do it.

That's really neat about the Charity Ball. What does it raise money for? And how many years has this ball been taking place?

I've just been travelling a lot lately to get things done, meet with people, go to various appointments, speak to organizations, etc. Mostly pageant stuff though. Just over the past 3 weeks, I've driven nearly 5,000 miles. It's insane.

I wonder how her lab thing went

Yeah, I saw it when it came to the cheap theater a while ago. It's an alright movie. Not awesome. But it was alright.

Yea, I didn't think it was as good as it was hyped, even though I usually love apocalyptic movies and Will Smith's stuff.

Charity Ball raises money for three charities: the BOOKS program (fights illiteracy in the Houston area), BCM Shoulder to Shoulder Foundation (provides healthcare for the underserved in Intibuca, Honduras), and the HOMES clinic (care of the homeless in Houston). This will be our 16th annual Charity Ball 🙂

5,000 miles?! Crazy 😱

Anybody else watching I Am Legend on TNT right now?
Not a bad movie. But I'm up at school, trying to synthesize the limbic system...

I'm just not a huge zombie movie fan. I mean, I felt like Will Smith did a pretty good job in the movie, but zombies are just kinda lame .
