Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yo what's that song that goes "shots shots shots shots shots shots" etc?

I'd go to just about any country. That's how much I like to travel.

😱 I can't imagine being in your shoes. I am nowhere near ready to go back to school.

awesome we are gonna be best friends very soon 😀

btw your disney world pics look super fun, i gotta add that to my to-do list 😉

Oh, I'm way ahead of you. I'm already thinking about spring break and next summer. 😀 I'm thinking South America...

You are both correct! LMFAO ft. Lil Jon. I just had to google "shots song." 😳

dingy, looks like your type of music video. It'll prep you for Miami.

YESSSSSSS! Forget about orientation, we need to start planning NOW! That would make one crazy SDN meet-up. :hardy:

This song is kind of annoying but catchy at the same time:

My first post in this thread in like 6 months (tho i've been lurking for the last few days 😳). Things have changed!

anyone know where you can get free/cheap titer tests done? I have no insurance anymore, and while i had all my immunizations an titers done a while back, they want me to redo my hep b titer...to enroll.

I dont want to pay like 200 bucks for this...i remember getting like 3-4 titers before and it running me like 300 dollars 🙁.

I assume this isnt something a free clinic can do?

I have no help to offer you. I'm sorry. 😕

I have no idea either. 🙁 It doesn't hurt to double check at free clinics, or at government-run places. That's where I went for some immunizations for an overseas trip 4 years ago.

I couldn't find a way around it.

And I'm apparently not immune to Hep B so I need to get the series again AND another titer at the end 😡

ooh and I officially have a home in NOLA now 🙂

I think I am now officially jealous of anyone that has housing 😀

yay though tats! Are you excited about moving in?

:bang:

why, oh why, can I not remember these stupid innervations and blood supplies?!?

You keep hitting your head on the wall and you'll have some blood vessels popping out of your forehead as specimens 🤣

I'm the king of bad jokes 👍 I'm sure you can do it sammi! If you can't, well everyone else is screwed too so at least you've got company 😀

99.9% sure free clinics won't do that. Seriological immunity tests are (apparently) very specialized and require fancy doohikeys. I had to get titer tests for chicken pox, Hep B... and something else I think? It sucked esp because it is not covered by insurance (unless it's for employment... and med school entrance doesn't count as that). So I guess that's some small consolation that even if you were covered you'd still be paying out of pocket? 🙂

Also get this - Penn doesn't accept TB tests from anywhere but their own people. So I have to get a TB test AT penn - wth? 😡 I mean; it's just going to come out positive anyway. oooo maybe I can tell them that and show them I took the isoniazid and have a clear chest xray and I won't have to get a stupid PPD [that's the standard procedure I'm supposed to follow for everyone else...]

I'm kinda happy that I test positive for TB bec then I don't have to get PPDs anymore. I hate needles (I'm great at sticking other people; just hate it when I have to get sticked 🙁 )

Immunizations (for the most part) are cheap (relatively speaking). Titers require special antigen/antibody thingies and weird filtration columns or some such (see previous post about fancy doohikeys). 🙁

I couldn't find a way around it.

Yea I was seriously crossing my fingers that:

a. My body still remembered chicken pox from when I was 8; and still hates it enough to go Kill Bill on varicella.
b. That the Hep B shots took. That'd really be the worse, because w/ chicken pox - taking the vaccine is enough; but apparently w/ Hep B - there is a chance in like 10% (or something) people do not develop immunity and need to do the cycle again. Good news is sammi if you don't get immune (i.e. titer doesn't come out positive) after this second round; you won't have to do it again! Down side is you can't be made immune to Hep B 🙁

hmm guess im going to have to go spend 500 dollars yay..🙁. i got 3 hep a/b shots last year and a booster why do i have to test my stupid immunity.

Im going to email the school and tell them im poor with a child lol...maybe they will let me do the titer once im in school and insured...

There are a lot of 2014 people (not our thread people) with the medical student status. This will sound douchey, but it bugs me. Except Sammich, because we know she is legit.

Pretty sure insurance doesn't cover it (even med school insurance). But you can def ask. Also if you are in school, you'll have loans and therefore some money - so maybe it'd still work out as a better idea

I feel like it's cutting the ribbon kinda thing - you gota do it at the right time! Unless you are like sammi, you can't do that now - that's just silly.

It doesn't bug me - I just think "dude, poser alert!" 🤣

I wonder if people who don't know I started already think I'm one of those.

I mean, I quasi jumped the gun and changed it during orientation, but I felt bad enough about that..let alone months ahead of time.

Yeah...I'm going to change mine the very first day of classes, when I'm officially a med student and all. I'm glad you're having a great time Sammich because it's already weirding me out/scaring me just thinking about it.

Sammich, if you've had the Hep B series before and tested positive for anti-HBs in the past, your school may not require you to get re-vaccinated. There's a ton of research out there supporting the fact it's actually quite common for individuals to have decreased (or even undetectable) antibody levels years after being immunized. Long-term protection (estimated to be ~15-25 years) is apparently conferred through the maintenance of memory B lymphocytes even in the absence of antibodies. So immunocompetent individuals should not require booster doses/another full series of vaccines despite low or undetectable anti-HB levels.

I pointed this out to my med school's student health department and attached supporting articles I found on PubMed and asked for them to double check school policy. The student affairs officer then let me know that I was exempt and didn't have to get the Hep B shots again (according to titers I just got, I was also "not immune"). I only had to provide them with my previous lab report showing I tested positive for anti-HBs. If you didn't have previous titers drawn, but have proof that you at least received the entire Hep-B series, I would still ask if they can excuse you from getting the shots again. Worth a try.

😵... Could you perhaps send me whatever you sent to them? I'd really like to not have to go through it all.

Plus apparently some vaccines just don't take on me. I'm still not immune to either mumps or measles.

Though my varicella titer did come back positive after just having it as a kid.

oh snaps really? Well actually if you've had the shot for that you are probably fine (see mini's post)

The problem w/ the hep B though sammi is still what mini said - you must have had an anti body test for hep B (and shown positive for it) at some point. If you've never had it they will test you. And if you didn't come up as positive now, they will make you go through the sequence one more time at minimum one more time. It's something specific to Hep B (I went through this sillyness when I had to do it - because I really really didn't want to deal w/ more syringes than I needed to  )

Didn't know about the loop hole that mini pointed out - good to know 👍 Problem is when I got my hep B shot back in HS - I'm pretty sure no one (including me who got the shots) were ever AB tested... looks like that's a new thing they've started doing in the past few years 😡

Yeah let me see if I saved the email and the articles. It's pretty easy to find though if you have access to PubMed. Just search for something like "Hepatitis B Booster Vaccines" and a bunch of stuff should pop up. But I will PM you with what I have if I can dig through my cluttered gmail box. 🙂

And measles/mumps don't take on me either. Apparently I'm not immune to either anymore -- and this is after getting the MMR shots when I was a kid AND in 2005 for grad school. So this is my third time getting the vaccinations, and they hurt like a bitch (the school wouldn't exempt me from it).

I think orientation is totally legit.

I mean, AMCAS rules state that you can't accept a waitlist spot from any other school once you've started orientation somewhere - so I think that makes it official. You're enrolling and committing and stuff, so why not?

It's still not routine to have titers drawn after the Hep B shots. I just happened to be entering grad school at the time and had to get them done.

Is that really true? Hmm. I heard that last year a couple people dropped out during orientation to go elsewhere.

ah, yeah I've never had an Ab test for it. So I will have to go through one more round at least.

Blah.

... I should get on that....

I think I'm just postponing as long as possible. I've been having a pretty chill summer so far, if you can't tell from my Fb pics already. 😀
