Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok bedtime.

First time in the Clinical Skills Simulation Center tomorrow. Luckily no standardized patients until next week but I still have to dress nicely.

Then dissecting the some more of the arm later. Oye, tomorrow's going to be a long day, too.

ah, yeah I've never had an Ab test for it. So I will have to go through one more round at least.

Blah.

... I should get on that....

Ah okay yeah no titers means less of a chance they'll excuse you. Do you still want me to find the articles then, or no?

Is that really true? Hmm. I heard that last year a couple people dropped out during orientation to go elsewhere.

Maybe it doesn't apply to y'all because you start so freaking early!

I think I'm just postponing as long as possible. I've been having a pretty chill summer so far, if you can't tell from my Fb pics already. 😀

Me too. I'll get shocked back into reality when I start work on Friday. I'm on call on Saturday from 12-6, so I really really really hope I don't have to go in or I'll miss the entire US-England game. :xf:

Btw, Minimoo, I love your avatar.

Yeah I can't believe how early Sammy started. She'll be an old veteran by the time I actually get to attend orientation.

And thanks metallica. 🙂 I like it too. Are you a big metallica fan? And Justice For All was the second CD I ever bought (first was Nirvana MTV Unplugged).

Hmmm... this just made me realize that you guys were probably like 3 years old when the AJFA CD came out. Lord I feel old.

Metallica is like my favorite band. 👍 They are what got me into real guitar and metal music.

AJFA might have even come out before I was born. It came out in 1988, but I don't know when.

Edit - I was 8 days old when it came out.

My new school is awesome. My new lab is awesome. My new friends are awesome. I approve of medical school so far. There should never be class involved.

Oh it came out even earlier than I thought. I was thinking like early 90's, at least that's when I bought it.

8 days old?? Oh god.

I have most of the release years of Metallica albums memorized. I am kind of young for my class, though.

Justice is older than ksmi.

so many immunization topics i thought we can waive hep B, thats what i did for my work too is it not a good idea? 😏

met there is a big poster with lamawarms at the bus stop right when i exit the free way coming home! reminds me of u each time!

I think I will get a new credit card since I am losing my Shell Mastercard soon. I would like one that can get me rewards/points on stuff, especially gas/groceries. But even more importantly, I would like one with 0% interest for as long as possible. Any suggestions?

I'm up way too late. Sleepy time.

Can we revist the immunizations topic? I was under the impression that at most schools if you have a record of immunization you are good to go. Do you need titers for all of the things also?

My little immunization sheet thingy says that MMR can either be satisfied by titers OR 2 MMR immunizations. It also says I need Varicella titer and Hep B titer if immune to the vaccination. That's all I can add.

I feel like a ******* for asking this, but what is a titer in this context?

It's where they draw your blood to see if you have antibodies against a particular disease.

Thanks.

I just know that I have to get some stuff done and documentation found. Never had the chickenpox vaccine. Hope the TB skin test doesn't hurt as much as the last one did. It just seems to get worse every time, soon enough I'm going to test positive.

I never had that one either, but I had the disease as a kid. So theoretically I can just get a titer. Although it might be easier just to get the vaccines.

True. Whatever is easiest/quickest for me is the route I will take. I just can't stand fasting the night before getting blood drawn. I'm not Ghandi.

I guess this post was the one worrying me. Why would she need to get the shots again?

Sammich, if you've had the Hep B series before and tested positive for anti-HBs in the past, your school may not require you to get re-vaccinated. There's a ton of research out there supporting the fact it's actually quite common for individuals to have decreased (or even undetectable) antibody levels years after being immunized. Long-term protection (estimated to be ~15-25 years) is apparently conferred through the maintenance of memory B lymphocytes even in the absence of antibodies. So immunocompetent individuals should not require booster doses/another full series of vaccines despite low or undetectable anti-HB levels.

I pointed this out to my med school's student health department and attached supporting articles I found on PubMed and asked for them to double check school policy. The student affairs officer then let me know that I was exempt and didn't have to get the Hep B shots again (according to titers I just got, I was also "not immune"). I only had to provide them with my previous lab report showing I tested positive for anti-HBs. If you didn't have previous titers drawn, but have proof that you at least received the entire Hep-B series, I would still ask if they can excuse you from getting the shots again. Worth a try.

I can't stop coughing. It's annoying.

I really don't feel like having to get any shots or a physical or anything like that. Going to the doctor is annoying. Plus, I don't have a go-to doctor - haven't had one since the pediatrician.

Sweet. I've realized that the llamaworm and I are forever linked so I can never change my avatar.
I kind of feel that way about my avatar. It seems many identify me by the Tarsier eyes.

I think the ones I've seen say you either need certain vaccines or you can prove immunity via titers. I think.
They make us do both here. Kind of annoying since my immunization paperwork was lost so I had to get a bunch of vaccines + titers.

Yeah, I never go to the doctor. If I do it means I'm about an inch away from death.

There are a few good ones. You'll have to look into them to determine what's best for you, though. All of these offer 0% intro APR for up to 12 months and maybe some kind of rewards program, too.

Chase Freedom
Chase Slate (no rewards)
Citi Platinum Select
Citi CashReturns
US Bank FlexPerks (allegedly a good travel card)
PenFed (can't remember the card's name)

At least for me, I need a varicella titer and a Hep B titer. The varicella titer is just because I didn't have the vaccine, only the disease. Hep B was required to be titered even though I have documentation of the whole series. It came back inconclusive, so I need to get the round again and then get another titer at the end of it.

I'd get in touch with your school. Mine wasn't super clear that we needed both until I started talking with other students.

It was like half I could give dates and half I couldn't. I got a chicken pox shot yesterday. My arm's still sore. Stupid chicken pox.

The immunization sheet for UVM is ridiculous. I've had to go to my PCP 3 times already to get shots/forms filled out/titers checked and I have two more appointments. Luckily I had titers to Hep B, rubella and mumps... but my varicella and measles didn't show immunity (which is weird bc i had chickenpox). Blah.

At this point I've gotten an MMR shot, Varicella, Tdap and TB*. Twice.

ick i need to get on all this vaccine stuff. i'm going for my checkup next monday so i should probably have what i need all ready to go...so complicated!

I never did that when I had blood drawn before.

Actually it was probably just for the specific tests I was getting. Nevermind. :smack: Duh.

It is for specific tests - mostly specific "routine" blood tests. Most things that require you to fast are probably looking at your blood sugar levels or metabolism levels (like thyroid horomone tests... I think - Dammit Jim, I'm a premed not a doctor)

Yeah, I never go to the doctor. If I do it means I'm about an inch away from death.

👍 Totally with you on this one. Actually, my parents always say I should go to a doc when I'm sick (they are parents - what'd you expect?); but I never do. But when I do go to a doctor, they FREAK out because that probably means I'm close to dying 🤣

It's kinda hilarious actually

anyone that needs a job before med school

Biologists Needed for Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Cleanup
We presently need biologists to travel to the Gulf of Mexico to work on the oil spill cleanup. As a subconsultant to the Fish and Wildlife Service, we are looking for entry level and experienced personnel with a degree in biology or wildlife biology who are willing to go to the Gulf states to help with the environmental problems due to the oil spill. The job would be a full time temporary position paying $200/day for entry level scientists and $300/day for more experienced staff. The schedule presently is to work 7 days per week for 2 weeks (14 straight days) and have a few days off. The schedule would then repeat this 14 day work period. Each rotation would be for 1 month with the potential to renew for other rotations. This is an immediate need.
We expect this work to go on for several months. We are looking for a minimum of a one month commitment. You would have to take an OSHA online course to become certified. The cost is $200 and is not reimbursable. All travel and room and board expenses will be paid. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of history and help the environment. If you are interested, please send your resume and your schedule, ASAP, for review and approval and you will be contacted if you are qualified.
