cats are top-predators in miniaturized form. it's like having a little jaguar or puma that lives in your apartment.

sure they lick themselves, sleep all day, are cute, cuddly, and adorable, but they also have incredible hunting skills and instincts.

they're cold-blooded killers. fascinating animals.

Free?! What do you think med schools are - a charity?! To be fair, Penn does offer very reasonable yr round parking actually. But philly's the most expensive city to insure your car in. So screw that. And I'd have to pay extra to park my car back where I'd be living - so screw that too.

Older dogs are chill. I like that. One reason why I like Great Danes. They may be enormous, but they're very chill.

Bulldogs too are the chillest dogs ever. (see opposite of terriers, even though I love terriers)

I was watching this Animal Planet countdown of the Top 10 Predators or something, and the house cat was #1 because it preys on the most species out of any animal in the world. Somewhere around 250 or so.

Well, AF is the way to go if you wanna do it! You make less money in the armed forces, but you don't have to worry about finding a residency, you get great pension, and I heard it's a lower stress job.

if i were to do it...I'd do the 3 year one..
right now hard to see the downside really when i am looking at ~55K of debt a year

the prob with the 3/4 year commitment thing is tho that they can keep you there longer if such a need arises. signing up for the armed forces is like getting a phD, once you're in, your life is in somebody else's hands.

It's definitely good stuff; but just be careful of the fine print. It's a great opportunity - but I've heard of some horror stories (there's always some) of people who were forced to do a longer term than they were supposed to because of a technicality. But this is def one of the best scholarship opps out there 👍

I don't think time served in AF / armed services as compensation for the $ they paid for you to go to school counts towards residency training. It counts as training, but not residency training. Or something like that...

well considering I will be getting my captain's pay (70K a year) during residency and only spend 3 years getting sucky pay (comparatively of course...I know I will still be comfortable and no malpractice insurance payments or DEBT!!) sounds pretty good....I know there are down sides of course but money does not seem ot be it

right, residency with the armed services is still residency, you don't get paid big $$'s.

BTW, what kind of plane is in your avatar? looks kinda like a f-22? but the intake's diff, a su-27 maybe?

Also - AF clearly better than all other branches. They fly planes mothaF#@%^! Can't really beat that. Well until the Navy starts "flying" in space. Then they'll be the coolest :meanie:
 
don't get sucked in by the money... seriously.. ask q's in the milimed forum too, although i bet you have already. the 3 years repayment is active only, probably, with at least 3-4 reserve after that. and 70K for an O3? really?

F-14. Su -27 has a more "pointed up" nose (I think) and an f-22's intakes are a bit different like you said.

Mind you -artist's drawing so slight liberties were taken 🙂

I love F14s and F16s. I used to like F22s till I found out they don't work well in Rain. Seriously - a fighter jet that doesn't perform well in rain !? 😕

no its 3yrs=3yrs unless I take the 20K bonus (which I wont), I will doubt check bout the "need arises" thing. Kind of hard to be certain though since I wont actually serve until 9 years from now.

+1 on the fine print...I am the super careful one in our family. Looks great though.

I can do an Air Force Residency (which if I decide to do surgery I prob will) and that will count towards "time served" in case I want to stay in until retirement (47 for me). Otherwise, I will serve 3 years after my residency (and fellowship....there appears to be more lee-way than I thought) and they will use me as a physician in my specialty.

Might want to take a look at the military medicine forum before signing anything. Some people have complaints. Many of those with complaints are AF physicians.

I've also considered the military route to avoid $200k in loans, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Lots of stuff can happen in four years. Stuff that might make one not want to move around. Not to mention troubles with specializing (and especially with subspecializing). Or getting part/all of your residency delayed for a deployment. Et cetera.
 
also, i'm rather certain with hpsp you HAVE to apply to a military match FIRST, right? civilian deferments possible but not guaranteed.

cool. i was looking into that for a while-the only thing that scared me away was that they might push you into a certain specialty (i dunno how true that is)...and the possibility of going to a war zone.

dang f-14, kind of a blast from the past lol, def don't see those types of intakes anymore. i think su-27's nose points kinda down a lil bit and is pretty fat, but the intakes are vertical instead of scanted outward.

Yea we aren't trying to dissuade you tatsy - just pointing out issues we saw. I was seriously considering it too (AF as well), but decided against it because of the uncertainty inherent in some of the clauses. But hell - quite a few people do it every year, so I'm sure it is good - but like you said too - +1 for reading that fine print 😀

Dude if you are in the airforce, will you pull some string and let me fly an F22? I promise I won't crash it!

Most of the many that were complaining were AF surgeons. I seem to recall someone claiming they were averaging around 10 procedures a month, and most of those were colonoscopies. That is not adequate surgery training.

They can keep you there longer for sure, I don't think they'll let you sign up if you don't allow that to be in the contract!

If I remember right, it's rare that docs are sent to the war zone (it's not like in TV). Docs are too valuable to be placed in the war zone - especially surgeons etc. But some paramedic/ER docs are placed in the field (obviously) - but usually a bit further back in camp at a "safer" spot.

Physicians are too valuable to be in imminent danger. Medics on the other hand...

yea 2000 during school year and more during breaks (they consider it "active duty" and I get a special pay)

I think it would be really cool to train with AF...esp with my interests
I know sounds dumb but I am not too worried about deployment...
70k is captain's pay....thats what I would be getting if i do an Air Force residency....i can always choose a civilian residency (which I would do if I end up wanting do be a neurosurgeon, ENT etc) but get paid civilian pay.

Thanks for bringing up the reserve issue....I want to ask all the possible questions before committing
 
i mean if you save/invest your stipend of $24k a year, you could come out with a good amount of cash
