I'm trying to learn to cook to save some cash/eat better. Tonight I made a nice chicken+curry over rice dish that tasted suspiciously like chicken soup. I added some lemon juice, lime juice, and chili paste to the leftovers. I'll let the thread know how it turns out.
 
cant believe i'll have just a month after i get back from vacation and before i start orientation with about 3 weeks before i move to the other side of the country 😱

noooo 🙁 still on homeless status! i just realized i was awarded 3000 at vcu whatever that means i cant find any loans :laugh:

i hope they're not expecting me to pay 65k out of pocket :annoyed:

im gonna try to go a full year of cereal + whey protein + spinach packet things + peanut butter to save some money

most def. every student on this is looking at a med school debt of ~100k. more or less. Plus every loan they do take is subsidized and no interest till after residency. it would allow students to not think about salary when choosing residency.

they did it right at the beginning of the economic crunch too...tough to keep it going, but glad they did.

I got a 11K scholarship from UVM.. but tuit is still like 34K a yr

I did not. Making a 12 year commitment (4 years residency+4 years active duty+4 years reserves) four years in advance was too much commitment for me. Depending on my personal situation four years from now, I might consider the Financial Assistance Program. For each year of residency, they offer something like $45k annually+$1992 per month. In the end, I think you owe 4 years active duty and probably some reserve time.

Then again, I've already done the math on what it would take to have my debt paid off 5 years after residency. The real question is whether or not I'll stick with the plan...

Edit: Wow, that's a lot of fours.

I am doing Air Force. Did the physical today....the "duck waddle" made me crack up soo much :\

Your math seems off. I am not required to do AF residency (but if I choose to...I'll get paid way more and it would count toward time served towards retirement), and 3 years active (cause I am doing the 3 year scholarship) with 5 years "reserves" (I spoke to my person and AF has never called any HPSP back from reserves).
I do get the hesitation to commit to something so far ahead...I made sure that I had a choice of what to do at every step. With healthcare reform unraveling I don't want to even guess how long it might take me to pay back my loans (I know many many physicians in their 40s who are still paying back)

Just be careful, these guys are notorious for being less than truthful.

I agree taty be careful. I mean i would never do this but if you choose it id say have fun 🙂. But yes i know several people who were told things and then it turns out differently. They will tell you w/e just to get you in so hopefully you have talked to others who maybe have completed what you have and know how it really works🙂

The above site is pretty helpful even though it hasn't been updated since 2005. Your bolded statement is kind of true. Although you aren't absolutely required to do an AF residency, you are required to go through their match process. If you are interested in a field in which the AF has trouble filling its residency spots, I wish you luck in being allowed to do a civilian program. I've heard that some people do GMO tours for their entire commitment time and apply to civilian residencies afterwards. The military medicine forums have a lot of useful information on the subject.

Well, not exactly. Most FL schools are newer and don't have the reputations or connections to lock down a solid residency post-med school. After comparing some of the match lists with other schools I had applied to, it was a pretty easy decision to make. The only school in FL that has any sort of reputations anywhere north of the Mason Dixon line would be UF, but I would never go to that school because of how cutthroat/gunner/depressing the environment there is.
