Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice.

I'm driving to Baton Rouge today to do some cleaning at the old apartment so they don't take it out of my deposit. I also have some stuff back there I need to finally get rid of. It kind of sucks driving there for only an hour, but it needs to be done.

They give deposits back in BR? In Gainesville it's pretty much an understanding that you won't get your deposit back.

What? They can't keep your deposit without reason.
Sometimes they call it an application fee or a "secure deposit". What happens is that instead of paying a full month's rent for a deposit, you pay $175 or $200 instead. That fee is assessed by a third-party company who promises compensate the management company for any damages assessed on the tenant. Then it's that third-party company that squeezes the money for damages out of the tenant instead of the management company. This makes it easier for the management company collection-wise, and also the tenant doesn't have to put so much money down initially. Downside is that this "fee" is often non-refundable.

phew.

Only reason I know that is my fiancée and I were looking at places and some places had security deposits of >$1400 and our rent was less than that (to be sure, lol). Some other places participated in this sort of a program.

my schedule is so full now that i actually "want" to be in science

monday - mstp seminars 1 hour + dept journal club 1 hour
tuesday - lab meeting 1-2 hours. evening clinical case seminars/groups 1 hour
wednesday - group meeting amongst 6-7 labs 1.5 hours
thursday - student seminars dept
friday - journal club for our lab, lab meeting with 2 other labs

all in between daily lab work
and then theres always some socio-networking event on the weekend

fsap/ciello, how are your rotations going

I decided to not do a rotation this summer. My PI broke off from our old boss in April and his lab is only four people including me, so I am staying till August to help out.

Where did you end up going BTW?

ughhh looking for cars is such a pain when you are broke >: (

I was browsing through Maseratis and that was pretty painful.

So I've decided that when referring to the "original poster", from now on I will "accidentally" make the typo of "OPP" when referring back to the OP. :meanie:

This makes me happy.

If you could also start all sentences answering females with "Girl,", spell the word "bad" with two d's, and also manage to do the running man....I would be even happier.

Huh...I've never had more than a $300 refundable (with interest) security deposit, though some places around here might want a full month's rent.

Speaking of interest, my SO just got audited by the state. The state seems to think that a school-sponsored scholarship (i.e. tuition reduction) is taxable income, so they want the SO to pay back taxes plus interest. Looks like we'll have to dig through the old scholarships and grants file to appeal this beast.

Buy a file cabinet peeps. It will save you money in the long run. In the meantime, it will make a good end table 😉

Oh they can always find reasons, like "we need to replace the carpet," even though I leave it cleaner than when I came.

Needing to replace carpet every x years is pretty standard (i.e. normal wear and tear happens). They most likely cannot keep a refundable security deposit for that kind of thing...as in, it's illegal.

Nice diction for gender anonymity. 👍

I'm a non-science major who did non-science based research in undergrad. Would it be too ambitious to contact researchers during the first couple weeks of school to inquire about the possibility of beginning research? 😕

I did it for the summer. They seemed pretty receptive. Then again I was a free worker so if you're asking for a job, they may not be.

That's another thing I'm figuring out. I'm continuing my research but there's no funding for that. Mom's convinced I should ask for funding from my lab, but I have no idea how to do that. I think it's nice enough of my PI to let me stay around.

Well I'd work for free during the year and then hopefully get some funding by applying through their summer research program. Hmmm maybe I'll look into that during orientation.

Is it weird/bad that I don't feel like doing research next summer or during the school year?

I thought I wanted to do research next summer, but I looked at the timelines and since I'm getting married and stuff it doesn't look like it would work. Plus, it would take literally the entire summer (we start about 2 weeks earlier in M2) and I wouldn't have any free time.

You don't need to do research at all. Just get married and enjoy the summer. It's more important anyway.

So I think this site is pretty cool: http://www.groupon.com/r/uu4450764. Everyday or every other day they'll have a different local business featured and sell like discounted gift card type things. They have quite a few different cities that do it too.

I've used it a few times. Definitely a cool site.

Getting married only takes a few hours, so what's the problem? 😉

I think I just want to do research for doing research in addition to bolstering the app. Getting married this December, so I don't have a wedding to worry about next summer... I dunno. I'm just ready to get this started, lol

I'm actually really really into anesthesiology and even though it's part of ROAD, I've heard it's not nearly as competitive as the rest of the anagram, lol

Back from Baton Rouge. That was such a pointless trip, but I guess it needed to be done.

My car hit 100k miles today.

And I recently thought 30K was a big deal. 😳

I don't plan on doing research either. Nothing really has interested me about it...but I think clinical research might be cool.

BTW sorry for just chatting for such a short time span. Wound up getting there later than expected. lol

Apparently, it's about as competitive to get into as EM.

That's cool. It was nice seeing you.

Clinical research would be cool, so maybe I could find a doc independently and do free research outside of an official summer program. Something that wouldn't necessarily take 8 weeks (which is all I'll have). Or I could shadow some doctors to figure out what to do with the rest of my life.

Yeah, clinical was what I was thinking...

It wouldn't hurt to ask. Your PI might not be pay you directly, but he might know of other sources of funding that you'd be eligible for. The worst case scenario is your PI says no and you end up working for free (which is what you're planning on doing anyway...)

EM is competitive?? Grr. I was thinking of that as a possible option outside of Peds... Does this mean I have to go and earn more overachiever credits. 👎

EM is getting more competitive, but 95ish% of everyone that wants it gets it. Of course, some of them end up doing residency in Bumblescum, USA.

Not really. It's getting more competitive, but I think it's about middle of the road as far as overall difficulty to get in.

Residents at some of the better known (though I hear there is no such thing as a bad EM program) programs are all mountain climbing, marathon running, triathlon completing AOA members 😱

And I recently thought 30K was a big deal. 😳

Mine just hit 60K. Had 30K on it when I got it 5 years ago. It was only 1 year old then.

Yeah, I know. I just don't know how to phrase it. Help me!

Yeah, that would definitely not be me.

I will probably be looking for location of residency first in whatever field I go into.

Hope I didn't sound like I was whining. I just always hear of the really competitive ROAD residencies and never saw that EM was getting up there in ranking. Heh, I'm obviously not 100% sure of what I want to do, but I'm content with it being a not-as-competitive speciality if it turns out that way. 😀

Some people try to change it to E-ROAD.

"Where we're going we don't need-- ROADs."

Mine is 3 years old. Guess you can tell I don't really like driving. 🙄

its too early to start freaking out about residency guys!😱 i dislike research but i can stomach clinical for the sake of app bolstering. But for me, my M1 summer consists of 6 weeks...what can i even do in such a short time? I just dont know how to fit in research or even how necessary it even is assuming you dont want to go into anything road or surgery.
