Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha i'm hardly a chef like i made myself out to seem, i'm sure i'll pick up a couple more things sometime soon

i'm just saying, i've had some disgusting roommates.

i think everyone has a bad roommate along the way, and a good number of interesting stories to go along with it

Gosh, I would totally appreciate skipping that phase in life. MD school will likely be the first time I've had to long-term room with someone outside of my family. (Yeah, I never got the dorm experience 🙁 )

freshmen year dorms are ridiculous. i had a GREAT time, but one year on campus was enough for me.

i don't think you missed that much. sure, it forces you to make friends, but it's nothing you couldn't do otherwise with a bit of initiative

maybe you guys had different dorm experiences than i did, but mine was something that could never be recreated. the only way to describe it is as a zoo.

They get a LOT of apps, so even though their stats aren't really high, it's still kinda hard to get into. That's my understanding of it. I'm not applying there, though. Just the schools in Philly since Mr. Geek got a new job.

Working and probably tutoring some kids for the GED.

starcraft 2 anyone?
No thanks, CoH for me!

oh wow haha muh bad. the weird part is i knew it was Geek. guess i really have been away from sdn for a long time.

It's okay, man. Seriously, it happens all.the.time between this board and another board I frequent. 🙂

I took the MCAT in March and am retaking it in June...what should I do about my AMCAS app? Should I submit it as close to June 1st as possible or wait to submit it until I've received my MCAT scores from the second time around? My current MCAT score is way too low to get into any school (just didn't have a good day on test day...).

My application is pretty solid--3.808 GPA, 150+ physician shadowing hours, a publication, loads of clinical experience in a variety of areas in the medical field (from dentistry to nurses to psychiatry...), and other nonmedical ECs including music, sports, and school involvement. LoRs are looking pretty strong as well. Basically a good MCAT score is the only missing piece.

Thoughts?

In that case, just submit it in June if you have it ready. It takes a while for your primary to get verified.

This is ridiculous. Something about looking at the form makes it feel more real...

Looks like I'll actually need to make some school choices for real. :scared:

nah. don't do that. just close your eyes and see what you pick.

Hopefully I'll be getting a lot more shadowing done. I emailed a center here, the administrative director, who talked to the the president of the center's board and he said it was ok for me to shadow any of his physicians and then gave me all of their phone numbers! I don't know how many more clinical hours I'll get :-\

id highly recomend avoiding gwu at all costs. Its one of those schools everyone applies to but then looking back, 95% probably regret. A waste of time and money for several reasons. But suffice to say unless its like your number one or staying in dc is a #1 priority. DOnt even apply to such a school. As you look through schools webpages you really cant get any real idea about if you will like it or not. Really until the interview or after, you probably wont know 🙁. Applying is basically random or based on prestige or location for most.

the 2014 thread has alot of posts hahaha we have alot of catching up to do!

im going to put a sticker on my chest with my SDN name at my interviews we should all do the same so we know who is who im sure more people will have stickers than not lolll

hey guys, as far as shadowing a doc, i know its late but i think im going to start next week...what doctors should we be looking into shadowing?

Whatever sounds interesting to you. I'm really interested in forensic pathology, so I shadowed a medical examiner. I would suggest, though, at least shadow a doctor with live patients 🙂

i'd start with some sort of primary care, since a lot of schools would like to see you have an interest in primary care.

doesnt matter w/e one will tolerate a pre med following them around 😛. I did trauma surgery i thought it was sweet.

haha what about a psychiatrist...if she is an MD
thats fine as long as its MD and you can talk about seeing what it really is to work with people as an MD or w/e you are fine. all psychiatrists should have an md btw 😛. I think its psychologists that only have the phd or psyd degree.

The $1000ish in fees is also a bit daunting.
 I wish that was what I thought all this will cost me.

Definitely check out whatever interests you. I've heard (here on SDN) that some schools like it if you shadow a primary care do like Elijah said.

I shadowed an orthopod and a pain management doc, and I really liked both.

i really like pediatrics and orthop but i don't know any docs that would let me do it im gonna stop by my hospital after my midterm on thurs

LAKERS!

Is it ok to shadow for a day? I'm contacting a medical group with all different types of specialties (primary care included) and was thinking of trying to set up a different specialty each day (also if they might not want me to shadow them more than a day)

i did family med and ortho. i still need to get a DO too. probably gonna go with trauma surgery for that.

i think it's ok, but i think 3-4 times might be better, so it doesn't look like you're just trying to fill something on your app.

yep perfectly fine. Most do a day in several specialites as honestly you dont get much if you shadow the same dude for like 1 month or something. I actually had like 2 years of shadowing lol but only because it was built into my research and such. Everyday like 1/2 of my research was "shadowing" i suppose. One thing you can always do is ask after the 1st day if he/she wouldnt mind you coming back for another day or w/e.

I think a day is plenty. After a while it gets boring/repetitive just watching. Although I shadowed the pain management doc 3 days, but that was b/c 1 day was making rounds at the local VA, day 2 was pain clinic seeing patients, & day 3 was a day of procedures in a pseudo OR.

it depends on if you're trying to get a letter from someone, i would say. if you dont need/want a letter shadow whoever you want for as little time as you want.

Yea, it's just some of the physicians are really busy and are open for a day thing, but can't really continue past that, and I atleast want some exposure to what they do so I can ask them questions. I just hope it doesn't look like I shoved it all till now because I honestly didn't have the time with my thesis going on 🙁
