Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
im starting M1 in a few months and ill be 24. 4 years of med school, 3 years of Internal med residency, and 3 years of heme/onc fellowship leaves me at 34...🙁. So old!
Sounds great! I'm interested in doing peds heme/onc. I'm 27 and just applying, by the way, so don't feel too old.

My friend's mom once told me something insanely simple that has stuck with me for years. When I was first changing my career plans from economics to medicine and pondering the many pre-med classes I had to take, I was 22 and already worried about the "finish date." She said, "Look, in 15 years, you're going to be 15 years older, no matter what you do." Obvious, I know, but I think it's given me a good perspective on this process. Basically, don't worry too much about the finish date and how old you'll be. If you've come this far, you have hopefully figured out that being a physician is what you want to do. And in 10 years, you're going to be 34 no matter what you do...so good luck and enjoy the process!!

Cheers 🙂

I have to disagree. Confidence without substance is just bravado, and while it can work, it'll catch up to you when you get more than you can handle. Being without fear is simply foolish, a little fear will keep you grounded and motivated. Remember, fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

I'm assuming for our situation by 'substance' you mean one's stats. So, if someone is self-assured without having the competitive GPA/MCAT, this isn't true confidence, in your eyes.

I respectfully disagree. It seems like everyone should have the right to take pride in what they have accomplished, submit an honest application, and feel at ease, if they so desire.

No, I mean the whole application. Just having good stats won't get you anywhere, trust me, I know

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments, but being confident that they'll get you into med school is something entirely different. I'm pretty proud of my accomplishments, but I'm not entirely confident that they can help me beat Lebron James in a fight, for example. You can feel at ease if you want to, I think that depends a lot on personality, but I wouldn't criticize anyone who doesn't feel at ease with this process.

Ah okay, yes, I whole-heartedly agree with you then. No one can guarantee anything.

I was talking more along the lines of the 'face things as they come' mentality, but I see where you are coming from also.

I always get sick after finals while I'm on break. It happens so much I think the stress response during school keeps me healthy.

Feel better.

🙁 Hopefully it's something mild - it sucks to be sick when you're studying, though if it gets really bad you might consider going to the health center. Usually my profs are fairly lenient if something like that happens to a student.

Haha, yeah I understand. I just felt like you were maybe directing that at me, while honestly I already have an acceptance somewhere, so I'm really only applying to other schools because my acceptance is hella expensive.

Thanks ya'll =)

Whimsical, does your university remove your guaranteed acceptance when you apply elsewhere?

Yea, I think that's a good mindset to have. Once you send things out, there really isn't much you can do anymore.

yeah, that kinda bugs me too. oh well, we'll be fine.

Well I'm screwed as far as getting a lot of volunteering and shadowing done. I just found out (it was at the mechanics) that my car is officially done until I can pay a couple thousand dollars to replace the entire engine, so I won't have a car for awhile and will have to find a job nearby. I'm gonna try to take advantage of my sister visiting to use her car to atleast shadow a local primary care doctor for a day before she heads back to UCF. gaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!

bummer. do you have a bike?

hello 😀
Ah I'm so nervous about the application cycle!
Good luck to everybody!

hey Artimacia, I don't know if you still volunteer, but I did a lot of my 'shadowing' while I was volunteering. Like, when I was hanging around the nurses station sorting some papers or something, I'd see a doctor, and just introduce myself, and ask "hey, would it be alright if I tag along for a bit, I'm interested in applying to medical school, etc etc."

I mean, it's not super formal, but if you can make a pretty good rapport with docs this way, and at least get on a name-to-name basis, and after a couple of instances tagging along, them talkign to you about their work, you can honestly put it down on AMCAS.

Haha, believe it or not, I always saw more nurses than doctors at the hospital. Sometimes, I even went out of my way to look, but found only one or two, but the nature of my volunteering required me to be moving a lot so I couldn't stay. I haven't been back there for a long time due to this insane semester, but I'm going to see if I can return back to the low income clinic I was at in my sophmore year. They have about 10 volunteer doctors during their hours, so maybe I can tag along there.

BTW, I don't have a bike or anything, and lucky me, I live near the everglades, so there's only a few things near me 🙁

there must be some clinic stuff around you, get whatever hours you can! just a month before submission, it's like the final dash.

I'm gonna try, haha! I'm gonna take advantage of my sister being here for the next week with her car, and then my car might be ready, and I'll just have to work a lot and try to volunteer as much as I can throughout the summer. The thing is, though, that my parents work near the low income clinic, so maybe I can just hitch a ride with them, ya know

dingy u must have the best avatar ive ever seen hahahaha

after kobe bryant, of course

or maybe they'll let you drop them off so you can have the car for the day and you just got pick them up when they're ready?

Haha, hellllll no would they let me take their "baby".

its worth asking

Haha, I'll talk to them about it. I mean, at the clinic, they aren't open for more than a few hours on certain days. Hopefully, though, they'll be able to get in a new engine by the end of next week (closed a few days) and I have my car back. Lucky me, jury duty on Monday.

yea, that should work! do whatever you can and rack up a lot of hours. when adcoms told me that i needed more volunteering exp, I did ~30 hours a week and racked up 100+ in no time. sometimes you just gotta go and do these things 😀

yea fer real, all the 2014ers complain about it giving them seizures

arti...i think you have more non clinical activities to list then 15 applicants combined lol...i wouldnt stress too much if you cant get more clinical, is it a weakness sure, but theres no point in worrying now. Apply and just dont worry, worst case scenario you apply next year and have more clinical exp 🙂.

30 hours of volunteering a week... i'm guessing you had nothing else going on?

Is it really that big a weakness? I mean, it's not like I don't have any 🙁 Ugggghhh I hate how I tried to do everything at once and didn't have time for clinical stuff

Omg, if I had to do 30 hrs/wk of the volunteering that I did, I would...not be a happy camper.

oh no im not saying like i know for 100% that its going to be a big weakness or anything, just saying that while it is an obvious weakness that at this point it doenst matter since you are applying in one month. I had several weaknesses in my app and still had multiple acceptances so like i said dont think i was saying that its goign to hold you back. Schools look for things that none of us will ever know about till we are like M3s and on the committee (at which points its a little late😛 ).

For me besides my failure mcat (29), I had a lot of clinical experience both research and volunteering wise, i mean 1000s of hours easily, but I had next to no non clinical volunteering exp outside of a one 4 month stint of tutoring i did. I also had little to no "leadership" roles that everyone loves to talk about. That was a huge weakness for me obviously but it worked out fine, granted i had a good reason as to why i didnt have the "perfect" app volunteering wise but w/e. What I did and what you may want to do also is if your mcat comes back fine, start getting more clinical experience during you app season just in case you have to reapply. If you did this, you could easily have a solid year of experience if you werent succesful. I did this except for me, i did 2 non clinical volunteering things. And while I was accepted at way more places then i thought, it was still nice becuase it gave me something to update schools with and to write meaningful LOI. Just a thought 🙂

Also had a part time job and endless secondaries lol. It was only a month though, so it wasn't so bad. It was like 10-12 volunteer, 1-5 work, 6-8 volunteer, 9-12 writing secondaries on most week days.

I spazzed out for a split second. :d

mission accomplished 😀

Ok, haha. I wish I would have focused more on it, ya know. I wish I would have done more shadowing, but I'll just go with what I have and apply early, while continuing throughout the year.

I think if you apply early you'll be fine. I just get the feeling that UCF would love to have you.

yours is worse hah. you came to the lab pretty early today, and i was late, as usual.

I liked that stuff, really connected with some patients 🙂
