Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also.... stick shifts.

Hell yes. I get an inordinate amount of visceral pleasure...um...shifting. And hearing the supercharger kick in.

Surprisingly when I listen to heavier, louder music I'm more attentive to my speed (I guess because I realize speeding as a possible side effect), but when I listen to mellow, easy listening stuff my foot turns to lead.

Weird. High BPM tracks and loud, overengineered tracks do it for me.

+1. though, it would be nice to venture to something made in germany one day.

The Germans do make fine cars. But not generally affordable until you have some measure of disposable income, sadly.

i'm likely to get a speeding ticket regardless of the soundtrack situation

I'd likely get a speeding ticket with any song, but as of now..probably:

"Stereo Love" by Edward Maya

Ummm...hooray for another completely out of the blue late-season interview! And for the record, as of yesterday's mail, the decision letter that was supposedly mailed on Friday still hasn't arrived even though I live only an hour's drive away. My overactive imagination has seized upon this as ripe material for conspiracy theories

Ok, so here's another icebreaker question: what song, if it played over your car stereo, would most likely get you a speeding ticket?

Back in Black by AC/DC 👍

Also, for the one before, I'm a new car person. I LOVED my RX-8, and I bought my current car new as well (though I traded my RX-8 for it, so technically I didn't buy it.

for some bizarre reason, ONLY med-school related correspondence was getting returned to sender in the address i initially put in my amcas. i changed it to my parents' address since. my SO and i have decided the mailman of the apt is a med school reject who is intent on ruining my life.

Where?! PM plz!

Ack! No good!

Here's an ice breaker:

Are you a new or used car person? (I understand this is a function of priorities)

I guess I'm a used car person too. But maybe that's just because I can't see myself having the money for a brand new car anytime soon. But the Dirty White Ford (the official name of my car) and I go way back, so hopefully he'll make it to med school with me without dying. :xf:

We put an offer in last night. It's getting presented this morning. Gah!

Awesome!!!!!

Ok, so here's another icebreaker question: what song, if it played over your car stereo, would most likely get you a speeding ticket?

Open Road song by Eve 6. (Remember them, right?) The song talks about going 80, so I just always feel the need to go at least 80 when I hear it. Good for driving on the freeway, bad for driving on the 50-mph road near my house.

Sorry the decision letter hasn't come. But yay for random interview!

In unrelated news, it's so windy where I live, that at 8ish this morning the power went out in the whole building at work. So I'm mostly done for the rest of the day!

That is really weird 😱 Mailman jealousy...sounds like a great movie plot

Yay for the interview invite! I hope that decision letter gets to you soon Sun 🙂

Weeeiiirrd. I used to have an RX-8 as well... and I miss that unreliable thing so much. It was a red 6-speed manual with red and black leather interior... and now I drive a CX-7. Boo. It's a soccer mom car.

Edit: As for a song, I'm going to go with Ace of Spades by Motorhead.

Morning sickness, or the nauseating feeling that accompanies parting with a large sum of money?

Both, I think. I would think the way smells trigger a surge in the nausea means it's more likely the morning sickness (which is a total freakin' misnomer, it's all miserable freakin' day sickness) starting a week earlier than it did with Chicklet.

Heh. Well, that sucks, but remember, you brought this upon yourself. 😉

On another note, I'd like to give a shout-out to silly high sensitivity, low specificity screening tests. /shakes fist

New....because I like to run cars into the ground. I have had three cars in my life. One was then passed down to my brother. One was totaled (NOT my fault....someone hit me when I was in the car but wasn't moving) and the one I drive now that I plan to drive until it falls apart beneath me.

Speaking of which...I need an oil change.....
Very nice!. Reminds me that I still need to change my oil, too!

We put an offer in last night. It's getting presented this morning. Gah!
Congrats!

Jeez, there's a lot of you thinker-judgers. 😛 Well, this clearly indicates I was meant to be a doctor.

In retrospect, I should have put that on my application. (In addition to having played a priest in WoW for a few years. Does that count as clinical experience?)

As for new versus used cars, I like to go with new, though I've only bought one car using my own means so far in life and I hope to not need to get another one anytime soon. (I love my car too much.) I can't see myself purchasing used, though I could go certified pre-owned.

Flow, for you I would think a 3-4 year old used car would be acceptable. Guess it depends on your budget and needs.

Ok, so here's another icebreaker question: what song, if it played over your car stereo, would most likely get you a speeding ticket?
What sort of carro are you driving?

I'm still feeling 3-4 year old used at this point. I'm pretty sure an Infiniti G35x sedan is gonna end up the winner, but I haven't test driven one yet. Seems like a good fit tho, compared to the other vehicles I was looking at. I feel like Nissan should be as reliable as toyo/lex. (also looked at an Acura RL, but not as big a fan as I thought I would be)

Song:

Used Hondas. 👍 Reliability. My current used Accord I bought with 100k miles on it for around $1-1.5k. I've put another 110k miles on it (some repairs, but not enough to justify a new car). I took it on a road trip across the country - works great. Also.... stick shifts.

I really want a manual. I can drive stick, but I don't have enough practice to test drive someone else's manual, though =(.

Used cars all the way. I get used Hondas or Toyotas and drive them into the ground and that's probably what I'll do for the rest of my life.
👍

+1. though, it would be nice to venture to something made in germany one day.

i do love my honda.

Test drove an Audi S4, really liked it. Kinda high mileage (78k) considering that I want something to last a really long time and be reliable, though. My current vehicle just eclipsed 190k.

In terms of name plates, I'd go with Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus. The only issue with the Hondas/Acuras are their transmissions--some of the late 99-04 models of Hondas/Acuras with 5 speed auto transmissions have high failure rates. Take this from an owner of a 2001 Acura TL.
I really like the Acura models with V6+AWD in general. Lexus holds its value too well, which sucks for used car buyers like me haha.

The counter offer we got back is a joke. I'm kind of offended. Part of me just wants to say, "Yeah, **** you. Good luck with that."

Our realtor is going to talk to the seller's agent and find out if they're really on drugs. Meanwhile, I just noticed a house that's close to where we rent now, which is in the burbs, dropped its price significantly. It needs work, but we're not sure how much. But between the location and the size we could stay here a lot longer than if we bought in the city.

What sort of carro are you driving?

'06 Mini Cooper S. 4+ years, 80k+ miles, and still plenty capable of putting a ****-eating grin on my face.

I feel like Nissan should be as reliable as toyo/lex.

My previous car was a 2000 Nissan Sentra. It's never needed real major work other than emissions. 11 years, ~140k miles; gave it to my dad when I bought my Mini and it continues to be plenty serviceable for him.

Remember a little thing called tact. A simple "lolwut" will suffice. 🙂

My letter (finally) arrived. It was small-envelope. Acceptances from this school are in big envelopes with "Acceptance materials enclosed" stamped on the outside. But it turned out they just hadn't made a decision on me yet. Phewf. 😎

Mine was black w/ same interior. I loved it too, even though I got it right off the boat when they were released (ordered 3 months ahead of time), and I got rid of it when it was still "hush hush" that something was dreadfully wrong with them. Mazda had no clue how to fix it, so they pretended it was fine, but after driving about 60 miles on the highway it would just cut off, and then not start up again for hours. I took it to a Toyota dealer, let them take it for a test drive (note: not 60 miles), everything worked great so I swapped it clean for a new Matrix xR.

The RX-8 was 2-3 yrs old at the time, and completely screwed up, so I figure not a bad deal, however, I miss my zoom-zoom! 🙄

I used some articles to prove that cigars (under moderate/rare use without inhalation) show no significant correlation to increased rates of any sort of cancer the other day... I was trying to get funding for my fundraiser smoke-a-thon for ALCS event. 8)

That's a sweet car. My cousin has one and loves it 🙂

Holy cow, I never realized RX-8's had so many problems.

Holy cow, I never realized RX-8's had so many problems.

Indeed. There's also just the daily annoyances of not being able to shut off the engine while cold for fear of flooding the engine, making playing musical cars in a driveway when you need to let someone out very annoying. Oh, and the tiny battery that really likes to die if you even think about accidentally leaving your lights on for a few minutes, or listening to the radio without the engine on...

We have a 1997 Ford Taurus Station wagon. My only two complaints are that the damn paint keeps chipping and the heat works like crap. It probably needs a new catalytic converter but I don't intend on replacing it. It could easily cost half of what I paid for the car and I'd rather drive it til it dies then get something newer.

We also only have one car, but that works for us right now. Eventually we want a family hauling SUV or minivan and I want a sedan for commuting.

So I finally watched despicable me last night. So adorable.

Sorry to hear about the possibly-on-crack counter offer, GC. That stinks.

As far as my car, it's currently sitting in my parents' driveway awaiting trade-in or donation. I was rolling a 1988 Chevy Corsica, oh yeah. It worked for about a year after my great aunt gave it to me. I sank some money into it, but it's really not worth it anymore. Plus it doesn't even have cupholders! Time for a new car... and by new, I am thinking just new to me.

Me in my car (basically):

south_park_smug.jpg

I love it so very much, even when it tries to kill me by cutting the brakes when I drive over bumps in the road.

🙁 Does your Prius really do that? I heard of that happening, but I never knew anyone that it happened too..and I know quite a few Prius owners llol..too many, almost!

You're certainly taking it in good spirits. I'd be full of bitterness and self-righteousness.

my Honda Accord hybrid doesn't. Is this specific to Prius?

So apparently my boss thinks she's going to be able to talk me out of going to medical school. Because Lord knows I want to scan a metric f***ton of time sensitive documents into a hospital database for the rest of my life.

The Scene: Volunteer Organization Meeting Yesterday

The Background: I told them when I joined last year (like....in AUGUST, while I was writing secondaries) that I was applying to medical school. I also told them when I got into the first medical school in October.

Me: So, I got a scholarship so it looks like I will probably go to Bob's Medical School in Anystate, USA.

Volunteer Leader: Wait......so you're LEAVING??????

:eyebrow:

I wish that were a real school. I would go to Bob's Medical School.

Semirelated, but I keep meeting people (usually old ladies at the hospital where I volunteer or at the Y where I work) who either don't know what medical school is, or don't believe that I could possibly be going there in the fall. Like, I'll say "I'll be starting medical school in the fall" and they say "oh that's nice, are you going to be a nurse?" or "medical school... so what are you going to major in?"

LOL! Julie, I've had pretty much that exact same conversation, and with adults that are completely with it mentally. *Shakes head*

I also had a similar conversation with my father.

Me: Oh, so I didn't tell you my good news.
Dad: Oh yeah, what's what?
Me: I got into Temple.
Dad: That's great... for what? General studies or...?
Me: Uh, no, dad. For medical school.
Dad: Oh... OH! Well, congratulations!

He was at my college graduation. I've told him I was applying to medical numerous times in the past several years.

my parents try to talk me out of going. on a daily basis.

I'm thankful my parents get the med school app process.

And Hoody, yes I think it's a Prius-specific problem. I feel like something under the hood is suspended on hooks (maybe keeping air circulation around the big battery?) and when I hit a bump, a "your engine hates you" light comes on my dashboard and my brakes lose power. I've learned how to manage it though.

That just means they love you. 🙂 But any good volunteer organization that recognizes your value would surely try to keep you on.

He was at my college graduation. I've told him I was applying to medical numerous times in the past several years.

Kinda reminds me of my dad, except about other topics (he certainly knows I'm going to med school). He's getting old. *sigh*

my parents try to talk me out of going. on a daily basis.

Being of Asian descent, I don't have that problem. Thankfully it's not the reverse problem of parental pressure to become a doctor, either.

Hahahaah Julie YES; I get the nurse thing all of the time, too.

I try not to be too offended, because I love nurses, but geeeez.....do ovaries automatically equal nurse? So annoying.

I was reading a feminist paper from the 70s about women in health care...I think I'm going to pull out some tasty nuggets and post them someday. It was pretty funny because a lot of it doesn't apply anymore.... yet also...a lot of it is still sadly true🙁

.....do ovaries automatically equal nurse? So annoying.
I understand your frustration. Patients tend to refer to the male nurses as "doctor" or "doc" constantly.

Yes. Because a doctor would really put you on and take you off the bedpan.

Just read that Emory surgeons were able to complete a successful kidney transplant from Wake Forrest baseball coach to one of his players. kinda insane.
