Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I bought Step 1 first aid today at borders since they're going out of business and it was on sale. Heard it was good for referencing with class material. Felt like a gunner :\

Don't feel like a gunner... I have it too (got it as a gift but still).

And I think this may be my first post in c/o 2015... a little late.

my kitchen has had a small trampoline in it for over a week. can't decide if that makes my roommates good or bad :meanie:

Haha, from a neat guy's perspective, it's bad bc a tramp has no place in the kitchen!

day 3 and I'm behind in the reading already 😎

Uhoh..FML...I hate reading.

It is gunner-ish, ONLY if you're using it to STUDY FOR STEP 1. you can def use it as a reference to class material though! Also, since it was cheap/on-sale, def a valid reason to buy! what was the savings on it though? Our Borders near Penn Station is only at like 20-40% off 🙁

It was only like 25% off.. turns out amazon has it for a little cheaper, but oh well, at least I have it and I supported one of my favorite businesses on its death bed.

Me too.
Keep eating those pancakes, man!
Funny, I haven't yet acquired a taste for all these pancakes, even though I've heard I should be eating 5 a day. :d

I bought a used First Aid Step I today that was clearly owned by a gunner. They tabbed each section for easy reference, cross-referenced other texts in the margins, and took off the binding, laminated the covers, and re-bound it with a spiral binding.

(Step I is srs business, guys)

I have my first exam on Friday and I totally suck at studying. I'm "that med student" already, I fear. Guess that's what two years off and out of the game gets me. Sighhhh. 👎

Don't worry, I feel like a complete ***** that doesn't understand anything at all.

I feel the exact same way about being out of school for awhile. Blech!

I canNOT just read notes. It takes me forever. If I'm not hearing/seeing it and writing at least a bit of it myself, I don't retain it nearly as well. Thankfully, at least for our first block, anatomy, we won't be tested on anything that isn't in the study guide or gets covered in conference (daily short lecture before lab). I kinda think I burned myself out a little this weekend trying to pour over every last detail of 60+ pages of notes and it was overkill. I definitely need to get to the point that I study more efficiently, but I'm lucky in that I have a really good memory and I think I'll be in good shape once I find my groove for note-taking and review.

I feel so left behind. Wait up, guys... 🙁

I think since med school is about high-yield, not all-details, I'm going to finally start using highlighters to make note of things I think are high-yield and low-yield. Flashcards have always helped me with memorization, so maybe that too. Ugh scary.

Yeah, so far I've just been reading. I'm still trying to figure out what is the best way to retain information, or what's going to work best on exams. I've use flashcards before for straight memorization classes and that worked great. I used to highlight, but honestly it's a waste of time and doesn't really do much - if anything it was more of just something for me to do while reading to stay focused or for my hands to do (kind of like doodling). I might try to do "spacing" like I did for biochem and physio in grad school.

Tonight I'm simulataneously looking at the professor's PowerPoint (which includes his notes) + looking at my annotated copy of the printed slides + going over the book and using these to create a typed up, condensed "outline" of sorts. Much to my surprise I've found the textbook invaluable because his notes are pretty incomplete and he doesn't explain much in lecture.

All this embryology is really difficult for me considering this is the first time I've seen anything other than plant cells under a microscope. 🙁

man, I'm already feeling overwhelmed at orientation today.

Our school complete re-vamped our curriculum with no warning... and today they were trying to convince us why it was better. Some students were p-off. This afternoon was such a downer as a result. Even faculty seem confused/lost. And i-clickers are required! ughhhhhhhh.

Like actual, physical clickers?

We have school issued laptops, so we just use the rwpoll website for our interactive components of lectures.

LOL we have actual clickers too, they are apparently used to take attendance and interact during class. I'm not sure how long that will actually last bc only 3/4 of the clickers even register, another $50 out the window.

I'm glad you just posted that because I think I'm supposed to get one for school too but I forgot. 😳

I am truly feeling the love in this thread. btw totally going to a Cubs game today brb

Speaking of baseball, wanna know something incredibly sad? The Rangers are playing the Sox next weekend... EXCEPT I'M GOING BACK TO TEXAS NEXT WEEKEND.

😡😡😡😡

Nice timing. 😉 I assume this is a planned return? Med school hasn't got you running back home scared? 🙂

👍 Glad I'm not the only one, hahah.

Luckily our first class is a dinky human development focus, so the material is more soft science and not that difficult. But memorizing milestones of development for a 4 week old through old age is notttt the easiest when out of practice! Good luck, GC! I hope it gets easier for you! :luck:

ummm...wow. 👎

I feel so bad on your behalf, but I'm sure in the end you'll all get great scores. It must really suck for people who chose to go there because they thought they would perform well within the original curriculum, though.

Don't you know, people who don't go into medicine because they want to help people are doomed to fail anyway.

sameee. weekend, plox. need to catch up already.

Yeah, I need to catch up badly. It's so tough to gauge, I can't tell where my classmates are in comparison. Can't worry about that though. But first anatomy exam and practical is in less than two weeks.

You guys are freakin' me out. I've really been hoping I could keep the 9-5 schoolwork schedule (6-9 workout/get ready/eat breakfast, etc.)... may not be possible 🙁

They're probably doing fine, and you'll do fine too. I'm just lazy and haven't been able to study effectively. Too many distractions.

Looks like we're going to be at school/in class/in lab from like 8-5 every day, at least for the next 10 weeks or so. WTF? When am I supposed to work out? Or watch Glee?

Damn, guys. We're only in from 8-12 every day for the block class, then 1-3 on Monday for our doctoring class and then we meet again for doctoring in different groups from 1-3 or 3-5 Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (or 3-5 on Monday), but everyone only goes to one of those a week.

For those of you who have 8-5 lectures are they mandatory or do you have access to them online?

Lectures aren't mandatory but people have said that the professors get angry if a lot of people don't show up. The lectures are available online for us later in the afternoon/evening usually. Labs are mandatory.

I think this is close to what my schedule will be as well...there are flex afternoons built in for us.

Ours are like that too and they tell us lecture is "mandatory" but I think 1/2 the class before us went to lecture on a regular basis. I plan on going but I'm not sure I could do 9 hours a day without losing focus.

Well, they might flex a little, but they split us into 7 "colleges" and each of them is supposed to meet at a set time and date (Wednesday from 3-5, for example). They said those may fluctuate a little, and next year we'll still meet on the same day, but it'll alternate in time (if you meet from 3-5 this year, it'll be 1-3 next year), but we generally always meet at the same day and time.

exactly the same here. I'm still deciding if I think there is a better way for me; I don't really know yet. I have 8-5 3 days a week

We only have access to audio, and we may or may not have access to the slideshow depending on the professor/department. However, on our online system that is similar to blackboard, everyone puts up the powerpoints/pdf's there.

We also have a scribe service, that transcribes the lectures and add in notes of clarification for the slides, but those are available at night (deadline is midnight... but there's a few lectures already that some scribes haven't uploaded yet).

I've been attending all my lectures so far. That may change eventually, but right now I feel I get useful information out of anatomy lecture. Histology lecture has been hit or miss. One professor is amazing, the rest have been dull thus far, so I can see myself skipping out on that.

Wow a scribe service? That's pretty sweet
