Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i said that too, till real school started lol. now i wish i was in orientation. its sat night, ive spent the last 8-10 hrs studying with short intermittent breaks...welcome to med school?🙁

you know deep down you luv it 😀.

I hope when things settle down a bit you gather some intel for us, to help with interviews.

tired. 8-10 hours of studying sounds more productive than my 12 hour marathon day at work yesterday. supa boring.

I have to buy khaki pants for my new volunteer position.

I hate khaki pants.

With a passion.

Can I please be in medical school already so that I never have to wear khaki pants again?

On the plus side....every secondary is DONE, and 1 left to be submitted, yay!

If I don't complain too much when I go to buy the khaki pants, can I also buy something pretty?

at least your check will make you that much closer to calling yourself daddy phat$tack$

Khaki pants are annoying. Because of this, yes, I think it's basically mandatory to buy something super cute/pretty to make up for having to shop for khakis. It's weird because I LOVE jeans, and they really aren't that different. Hmm.

You'll be proud of me: yesterday after work I wrote BOTH OHSU essays. So I'm done! Woo! We're so productive!

yes! get some shoes (if you're the shoe type...i 😍them)
Cliff is going to hate you for prompting a discussion of my cute feet and how they deserve cute shoes.

Yay!!!!!!!! We are awesome🙂
Also, I mentioned you in my blog last night.

That sounded creepy.

ducky, i ended up adding extra powdered sugar and refrigerating the icing, which helped a bit, but my cupcakes still werent as pretty as yours. i put a pic up on my fb 🙂

also, i just finalized my fall schedule :scared: ...does anyone have any good tips/websites/books for biochem and genetics? what did you think of the classes?

I actually thought genetics was a lil tougher than biochem. I thought biochem was sorta fun.

I took neither traditionally though, so I cant really say how they are in the traditional semester, in class, sense. I took one biochem via dvd in which I had an online portal with the class for discussions and watched lectures on dvd. Tests were proctored. I took genetics where the professor was somewhere far away and broadcast his lectures to several different classes across the nation at the same time. Tests were also proctored. And both were summer courses, though they were not condensed into the shorter summer terms (both were mid may to mid august). Both were offered through my state university this way.

Genetics was tough for me cause I didn't stay up with the material I suppose. But the tests had lots of problem questions, were you have to make an equation out of the problem. I did not like that. lol.

I aced both. And all I used were the required texts. My biochem teacher had awesome fill in the blank class notes, so i really didn't even use that book much. If I can do it, you can do it!

Genetics- not too bad. It is mostly solving word problems using basic probability. You cover basic transcription, replication, and translation (but not in as much detail as molecular biology).

Biochemistry- This was actually one of the tougher classes that I took. Mostly b/c of the large amount of information to memorize. After you get past enzyme kinetics, most of the class will be spent memorizing pathways (krebs cycle, break down/formation of glycogen, I think I blocked out the rest 😀). Everyday, I spent a lot of time with blank sheets of printer paper, repeatedly copying the different pathways. I would say that the most useful thing I learned in this class was how mitochondria worked, in excrutiating detail.

ohhhh that oxygen disassociation curve..

I am love memorization classes cause I have a wicked photographic memory.

math and word problems can die a slow, fiery death. 😡

I am the exact opposite and I think that I'm going to hate the first two years of med school for that reason. 🙂

Me too. Except I took a really intense anatomy class recently that required many hours of studying each week to succeed, and I loved it. Plus, it's fun to make snotty comments with the info you've learned, such as "Psh, you wouldn't know a tubercle from a trochanter."

How was everyone's weekends by the way?

tips: learn them well because these are your 1st classes in med school (likely) and they suck even if youve already taken the classes 🙂. Biochem especially is way brutal in med school because its just so incredibly useless for your future. I kinda wish i actually learned it the 1st time i took it, it would have made things easier. And now back to studying biochem....🙁

I haven't taken genetics, but I actually liked biochem. There was a lot of memorization (which I hate) but my teacher tested a lot on application so we really understand how and why everything worked, and what would happen if something went wonky.

This is an AMAZING collection of websites that have animations, pictures info, etc. It is organized by topic:

http://homepage.smc.edu/schwyter_deborah/C31 pages/MainPages/C31 course outline.htm

I also love this website because the animations are awesome:
http://vcell.ndsu.nodak.edu/animations/

Really explore that second one; there are pretty detailed animations for a lot of different pathways and that SAVED me for the memorizing stuff.

i watched the first episode of nip tuck last night

only seen one other episode all the way through. i could easily love this show. except it's kind of depressing hrmph....

I stopped after the first 2 seasons for exactly that reason, but have considered picking it up again, especially since most of them are Watch Instantly on Netflix.

I think I am going to start Veronica Mars today

Last night was good. Full of eating good food and drinking "chocolate milk" and puking it up when I got home.

I saw them! They look good! The biggest thing I learned about frosting is to not be shy about adding extra powdered sugar. It needs to be pretty thick (basically hold it's shape if you plop a spoon of it on something) to be piped onto cupcakes/cakes.

I am one final away from finishing genetics! I haven't found it to be super hard but I like math (and it's really basic math) and most of it seemed like review from general biology. And my teacher is awesome.

👍 Veronica Mars is so great! I watched the entire series over a few days when I had a horrible flu. I couldn't stop watching it because it was so addicting. We must discuss your favorite characters when you get into it.

Oh Cougs, I thought of you over the weekend because I was watching a Psych episode that was about cougars. It was too perfect.

I want some fried rice but I don't have any day old steamed rice... and my fried rice usually comes out a little funny when I make it... I might order some for dinner, but I feel almost too lazy to back my car out of the garage hahaha.

i wrote this song about med school. i let drake take it to the top.

what is everyone up to tonight? someone come entertain me while i write essays 🙂

also, GC, we should host an SDN Class of 2015 gathering in Philly

Wooot!

Just finished Stanford and Penn State secondaries to keep my mind off of worrying about Vandy or UC Davis rejecting me already.

Now it's time to chillax for at least an hour. 😀

Yay! Stanford was tough for me, I don't know why.

Hey Robo, can I ask, did you get rejected pre or post secondary from Davis? You're in the area and have such good stats, it just seems super lame🙁

anyone watching the ruins on fx right now?
the med student is getting crazy experience. haha

I've never heard of The Ruins!

Daisy - hahaha, I am in the middle of that episode right now🙂

Tomorrow I start my new research position. Kinda nervous. Been awhile since I've started something completely new. I am hoping this somehow leads to a paying gig too, so I feel like I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself.

relax. you'll do great.

I dunno....me in khaki pants is not a confidence inspiring sight😉

At least New York and Company was having a sale, buy one pair get the second free. So I was able to get two crappy pair of khakis for the price of one.

What are you up to tonight, Cliff?

I had a mini relapse of sick and took a super random nap this afternoon for like 5 hours. Now I am struggling to get tired again. Also trying to figure out how to transport these for the next event I bake for http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2009/04/brownie-bottom-ice-cream-cupcakes/

i'm not up to much tonight. watched sunday night hbo. relaxing now. last night was a longgg night so i'm going to sleep like a baby tonight.

what's up with you?

I am thinking the following brownie ice cream cupcake combinations would be good:

Regular Brownies and Banana Ice Cream, which Chocolate Ganache on top

Peanut butter brownies with Caramel Ice Cream with Chocolate Ganache on top

Regular Brownies with Mint Chocolate Chop Ice cream with Marshmallow Fluff on Top

Mint chocolate brownies with Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Ganache on top

Regular Brownies with Raspberry Ice Cream with Chocolate Ganache and a fresh Raspberry on top

Caramel Brownies with Almond Ice Cream With Chocolate Ganache and almond slivers on top.

i've seen the ruins!!!!

insanely awesome beginning and middle, then the ending....sucks. really bad. like the writers had such a good start and then got lazy.

How far would you have to go? I think you'd need a giant cooler with a LOT of ice. That would be difficult.

As for brownie cupcake combinations, I vote for one with coffee ice cream in it.

I like this one! I am such a food connoisseur. I wish I could cook as well.

the frustration of this all finally caught up with me. beat up my computer tonight. im just so tense and stressed about everything, not to mention i feel completely inferior and light years behind. ugggh. i just want my mcat score already. 🙁

Yeah, I am thinking do all of the baking/ice cream making, then transport the ice cream and brownies and assemble on site.

Not sure.....don't know when the next time I will need to bake is. Probably for a holiday party. I don't have anything else looming on the horizon🙂

Oh no! lol I haven't been rejected from UC Davis OR Vandy. I just was worrying b/c their respective threads have been freaking me out w/ppl getting rejected. My bad, the post was really poorly worded.

The UC's are really my best bet I think, as far as getting in. And so far, I've gotten em all....now the hard part of actually getting an interview. lol

Also---good combo:

For the past 36 hours I have felt like I am standing on the edge of something amazing happening.

I really hope that it comes true.

It's the end of the weekend, which means the workweek begins tomorrow. And you know who's working? Adcoms.

AIDS might give you a compelling story....

Too bad HIV can take up to 12 years to become AIDS. By then the person may have already been rejected :meanie:.

My prof told us that she had a student who went through medical school and became an infectious disease doc. One day in the lab, he decided to test himself for HIV. The test came back positive! 😱

btw, Washington DC has the highest rate of new HIV infections in the U.S..... so if you get an interview at GWU or Georgetown, be sure to wrap it up :meanie:.
