Indeed. I know lots and lots of people (at my age, the majority are working and fully functioninog professionals) and almost none of them use or have used harder illect drugs. A lot of them don't even drink. The correlation comes from the fact that those who do use "harder" drugs, also smoke pot.
But this goes beyond just getting high. Its discrimination. I could have smoked meth all last weekend and went to work this week clean as a whistle. But if I smoked a joint two weekends ago, I'm a dirty dog. Pot and harder drugs are not the same. You cannot be very well functional with chronic use of alcohol, heroin, meth, coke, etc......yet as I mentioned before, you can be pretty damn functional with chronic pot use.
This is also about freeing millions of non violent (and mostly minority) offenders from our garbage correctional system. Its about giving Americans the freedom to choose (without the legal recourse and possibility of losing rights such as voting, owning a gun, getting a school loan...) just as we give freedom to choose smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, eating fatty foods, participating in high risk sports, etc...
And just food for thought....out of the 11 people who died during my 7 day stint at work last week, 6 of them were alcohol related, with ages ranging from 28-60. yeah. I have yet to see one person in three years for a marijuana related incident.
abusing pot is almost impossible if you're comparing it to the same abuse that heavier drugs encourage (from the actual use, to the home wrecking, to the violent crimes etc). a person is FAR more likely to abuse alcohol in the traditional sense than pot, regardless of the class of person.Just because you associate with a higher class of people, you would be foolish to ignore the large segment of society that abuse this drug beyond what you have seen.
Like I said before, CA has already decriminalized marijuana use. From there it is a large leap to make it legal to use. Atleast in CA, it is a misconception to believe that the prisons are filled with stoners. It is simply not true at all.

Come on, I know after you fire up a joint your driving over there to get a Big Mac and a vanilla shake 😛😆

i'm not a user, but i think it should be legal.
don't hate because I still like happy meals 😀

in moderation, sure. as long as it doesn't interfere with overal productivity such as school, work, personal relationships.I'm using the term abuse as defined in the DSM-IV. Sure, relative to crack pot isn't as bad. However, it isn't good (with the exception of medicinal use).
Just curious, would you be cool with your kid getting stoned?
I know you guys are just debating so that no one has to answer my "what is the stupidest thing you've ever done" icebreaker🙁
And yes....I still feel dumb for telling the NyQuill story.
I'm not sure the gateway theory has been proven concrete 🙂confused🙂. Either way, your words of wisdom apply to many poster's thoughts on the subject.Just because you associate with a higher class of people, you would be foolish to ignore the large segment of society that abuse this drug beyond what you have seen.
It is true to an extent though. There are major overcrowding issues....at least that's why I keep hearing people like Paris and LiLo being released early. And its not just in Cali, its all over the US (sorta fighting for the federal legalization here, sorry to mix the two) so legalizing marijuana the same way other drugs are legalized would free some space and it would allow several non violent offenders to retain rights that are essential to better societal functioning.Like I said before, CA has already decriminalized marijuana use. if you're cool with the idea of your kidding getting hammered (possibly dying from alcohol poisoning), how can you not be tolerable of the idea of your kid getting stoned?
Its not about your kid.Just curious, would you be cool with your kid getting stoned?
👍Its not about your kid.
hmmm, my actions, such as voting, reflect my values. One of my values is that I support policies that leave the world a better place for myself and my family. Maybe that isn't one of your values, in that case we can disagree. Its not about your kid.
No, I don't tell my kid everything is evil. Actually, I agree with your dad. If I don't want my kid to start, then why would I vote to legalize marijuana? And if I don't want my own kid to smoke pot, then why would I want to make it available to other people?so you're telling me you're telling your son that everything is evil?
the only conversation i EVER had with parents about substance use was when i was probably about 11 years old and lasted 15 seconds.
Dad: "what's the best way to quit smoking?"
Me: "don't start."
Dad: "good answer."
rhino's kid should feel lucky that s/he has a dad like rhino who is so invested in his/her well being tho.👍
hoody is on point today. but, the fact of the matter it is about rhino's kid when it comes to his voting priorities.
....just out of curiousity, if there was a vote today, would you vote to illegalize alcohol or ciggs? (we already know you'd keep mIckyD's 😛)hmmm, my actions, such as voting, reflect my values. you're missing the point. your kid might smoke pot no matter what you think and smoking pot is a common occurence in our society whether or not you vote for it.hmmm, my actions, such as voting, reflect my values. Edit: Essentialy, if I view marijuana as something bad. Then why would I want to make it available to people.
I find conversations like this from childhood fascinating. I always wonder about 1 - the conversations that we had that I didn't remember, and 2 - how many conversations we *didn't* have but something else in my mom's attitudes, beliefs, or actions, made her position perfectly clear to me and I either mirrored her opinion or rebelled and went in the opposite direction.so you're telling me you're telling your son that everything is evil?

when i was 15 and about to turn 16 and get my driver's liscense my dad was giving me a ride to basketball practice saturday morning and said "if you ever need a ride or anything, no matter what time it is you can call me." of course i knew that was his way of dancing around going to a party and not being sober to drive, i also knew he wouldve been VERY mad and that he didnt really want me to call him at ANY time haha.I find conversations like this from childhood fascinating. For instance...I definitely remember the sex talk. My mom brought out a medical textbook and had trouble explaining what an orgasm was
But I don't remember any conversations about child abduction, even though she tells me we had MANY. (Someone tried to kidnap me when I was about 2). But I always think of escape routes wherever I am.
I just showed more of my weird on the internet.

which leads me to believe that treatment centers are useless and a dumpster for cash. how can you say prohibition doesnt work and then vote for prohibition?!?!I don't think prohibition works. I also think the world would be a better place without both. However, I recognize that many people never have a problem with either. On the other hand, there are people whose lives/families are absolutely ruined by both. I literally know dozens of people who have been arrested, died, developed horrible diseases, lost family members, and had their lives changed for the worse because of addiction/alcoholism.
The treatment center I volunteer at has a success rate of 4% one year after treatment. 5 years after treatment, only 2% are still sober. This is the most successful treatment program my city.
I understand, but I believe legalization will increase use, which I'm against.you're missing the point. your kid might smoke pot no matter what you think and smoking pot is a common occurence in our society whether or not you vote for it.
how can you agree with my dad when he didnt offer anything in the conversation?
the point i'm making is people are going to smoke pot whether or not its legal. its not nearly as harmful as other legal substances and its not worth investing billions of dollars to try to eradicate it's use. whereas, it might be worth some effort to regulate and profit from.
the hemp for paper, clothes, etc... isn't from hemp plants that get you high.keep in mind with the current legislation any use of cannibis is illegal which includes hemp for paper, clothes, and the other various uses that the plant offers. all hemp products in the united states are imported as i understand it.
For the 2% of people that make it, those treatment centers are worth every penny. I've seen people get off the street, parents (addicts)reunited with kids, and kids (addicts) reunited with parents. I've also seen people get clean and fix health problems they have neglected for years/decades. Treatment centers do good work 👍.which leads me to believe that treatment centers are useless and a dumpster for cash. how can you say prohibition doesnt work and then vote for prohibition?!?!

So what would you pick. A lower tier where you know you would have an enjoyable time, plenty of fun, girls, and the ocean OR an upper tier where half of the students you met seem socially inept....
Decisions decisions... well at least I've got 7 months to decide
yeah, go where you'll be happiest.Cliff and I buried your post, and I see you're waiting for a response.
I would go where I would be happiest. If you are happy you will probably do better, which will create more opportunies in the long run. It sounds like you would be happier at the place by the beach.
Yeah, I know all about treatment centers. My brother is a convicted (marijuana possessing) felon who spent about 4 years in and out of locked down rehab facilities that cost my parents well over 50K because their insurance wouldn't pay (most don't).The treatment center I volunteer at has a success rate of 4% one year after treatment. 5 years after treatment, only 2% are still sober. too bad your brother was turned a felon over a relatively safe & harmless substance..Yeah, I know all about treatment centers. Every saturday we had family day. we had to sit in a circle with all the other families and talk. We started with our names and drug of choice. Mine was sugar as I was about 10 or 11. I always sat by a girl named Evie, who sucked her toes, and perfered crystal meth. I wonder where she is sometimes. Probably not part of the 2%..... 🙁
If there is christmas ale and eggnog and not 50+ people that I don't know, I am down. I love my beer and don't hold it against anyone that smokes pot... so I do like parties... I just don't like masses of people. hahamental note: rhino and tiger will not be attending the holiday party.
This seriously made me lol.For instance...I definitely remember the sex talk. My mom brought out a medical textbook and had trouble explaining what an orgasm was![]()
can't believe i just read all of that but it was entertaining.
legit trying to not go out tonight but i'm pretty sure the last time i rejected an invitation to go to a party was 28.3 million years ago
I think everyone is trying to keep up with me. I did 8 interviews in 4 weeks. 😛
Though I don't know how many Cougs did.....
jesus - what kind of stats do u have?? i haven't even had one so far - but 2 scheduled
All of the above is awesome. Rats are such cool pets. If I didnt have a dog I'd have a rat and a tortoise. In other news, I just bought two pet rats! Because I am spontaneous and possibly slightly irresponsible! (Did I mention that I move temporarily back into my parents' house in two months until I move for medical school... a house with two cats? Haha.)
Their names are Hilda and Zelda, named after the aunts from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. There's something deeply wrong with me, isn't there?

The only thing wrong with this is that Zelda is a princess. Sorry, Hyrule >>> Sabrina😉
