Life is AWESOME. I can't put into words how much I love my class. Best people ever. So my advice to you people, go to second look weekends and pick the school were you feel like you fit in best with the current students and the other potential classmates. Being happy is a crucial part of medical school, and it's the people that will make that happen.

School is school. I'm learning lots of stuff, most of it interesting. It gets draining at times, but we get lots of time in the hospitals too to remind us what we're working towards.

I've also decided that I shall become the resident M1 in this thread (unless there's already another - then I'll just replace them 🙂). So hello to everyone I've never met. :hello:

I think that is one of my issues this week....limbo is preventing me from even fantasizing about the future.

And Elijah05 was hanging here for awhile, but he has been pulled under by cranial nerves. Plus I force him to gchat me so he doesnt have as much time to post in the thread anymore🙂 So we need a new MS-1

Well good thing I'm here. 🙂

I've had a good few days. Anatomy test yesterday that I destroyed. Then a super relaxing day of shopping with my girls. Then hanging with applicants trying to make them want to come to WashU - acutally met one of you SDN 2015ers yesterday and talked his ear off while we watched the rest of my class make a spectacle of themselves at our post-exam party. Went to a sketcho bar where the bartender gave us free drinks and pizza - neither of which I partook in since I'm trying to be healthier, but it was still fun.

Today I slept in and skipped my first class, went to histo and histo lab, skipped another class, went to an ob/gyn procedural workshop where I got to learn how to deliver a baby and did an ultrasound for a real patient. Then went to my weekly Tuesday dinner with my crew - $1 tacos and $2 margaritas FTW.

Tomorrow will be weird. We start head and neck in anatomy which means it'll be the first time to see our cadaver's face. It was weird enough to see their hands and feet. I can't imagine what this will be like.

:laugh: If anyone was the weirdo, it was me. It totally slipped my mind that he was gonna be there (sorry jaxasp 🙁 - I'm a horrible e-wife I know), so I was totally oblivious about it for awhile. When he told me who he was, I totally freaked.

It's always funny when you run across SDN people. But the fact that for some reason like a year ago he and I decided that we were e-together made the situation that much more ridiculous.

P.S. If any of you people come interview at WashU, let me know. Meeting SDN people is fun! 🙂
 
You know how you "know" something for a while but then it really internalizes? That just happened to me in terms of how I'm actively working on figuring out how my life is going to change/where/who/what I want to be in terms of the next 4-10 years. Dunno if anyone else is feelin the pressure now eh.
 
it goes away once you make a decision. you'll be fine.

It can be tough to figure out what you wanna be when you grow up 😀. Try not to have a quarter-life crisis though.
 
I totally felt that way. It does get a lot better after you are set on a school. Not knowing where I'd be living in about two weeks (I moved in late May and didn't commit to a school until May 13th) was super stressful. Knowing where you'll be is a huge weight off. But even after making a final decision, I was anxious about my classes, making new friends, moving so far from home, etc. But once you actual get there, it gets a lot better.

I think everyone feels the way you do. This process is really tolling, so all I can say is to not worry too much about that all now. Just have fun with your friends at home and enjoy life. The future will all fold out in time. 🙂

It will probably come back in 4 years when we are deciding on residency. Right now, I am happy to be decided on where I am going. My biggest task now is not messing up my classes before I graduate next month. I was told I have to maintain C's to keep my acceptance, so my motivation is running on low haha.
 
you can live by the glorious saying "pays to get A's, but B's and C's get degrees".

yeah, residency will be the same process all over again, but we'll have to know what we actually want to be when we grow up. :lame:

The "what specialty should I do" decision shows up pretty quick. I'm struggling with that right now, it's a difficult decision especially with all the reform murkiness.

It's not anything to really worry over, but keep some ideas in the back of your head. Even if you don't know for sure, the earlier you get it narrowed down the better.

are we supposed to know before we take step 1? i feel like that'll either open or close a lot of doors.

What are you thinking about yoda?

My first choice entering medical school is already eliminated. So I've just decided to keep my options open til 2nd year. Then I can start seeing what I find most interesting material-wise and go from there.

You don't need to know for sure, especially since step I does close doors for many people.

I think it's good to have an idea though. Since right after step I you start M3,which means getting LORs, and maybe trying to get your name on a case report related to the field you want.
 
I have an eclectic list of specialties I want to see more of:

Orthopedics (total joint or trauma)
Anesthesia Pain Management
Infectious Disease
Immunology

This is what a lot of people have been telling me. The choice they come into medical school with is a lot of times eliminated.

Also, I think it's bad to go in with a main "first choice" because it kinda closes your eyes to a lot of specialties you didn't previously know a lot about. Just keep your options open

As of now: General surgery, ortho or critical care. Leaning towards the first two.


I originally wanted to do heme/onc, which I'm still somewhat considering. However, right now I'm kind of thinking of a combination of finding somewhere where my very not touchy-feely personality will fit in and avoiding mid level shenanigans. Also, I don't like the reimbursement model of heme/onc.

Endocrinology. I love the science and had an awesome experience doing research in it this past summer. However, I worked with some fellows who told me about their days in the clinic and I just can't see myself going through what they explained. Lots of telling patients what will help them and lots of them not listening.

I'm still thinking I might like peds endo since the children won't be as stubborn as patients, but I'll have to feel out peds itself. I went and interviewed patients in our children's hospital last week and it was a way different experience than normal patient interaction. I'll have to see how I feel about that.

We shall see what I end up doing. I still have lots of time to decide.
 
We should make the MS1s choose possible specialties for us based on random (possibly useless) questions. Like human magic 8 balls.
 
i think i'm ortho, pm&r, and family med at this point. open to whatever else too.
 
Ortho is my first choice, but I always liked endo too

judging from ksmee's sdn swagger i'm willing to bet she has "SDN" tattooed on her somewhere.
