Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I want to ask you guys for computer advice but no matter how I ask it, it sounds dirty! Sun got me all self conscious now.

I'd like to read House of God eventually too. All the debates surrounding it are making me curious which side I'll take.

I started reading some of it and it wasn't thaatttt exciting, I couldn't even get through the first quarter of it...I've read better

How long a flight are we talking? And what genres are you interested in?

"Would you like something to read?"
"Do you have anything light?"
"Hmm...how about this leaflet, 'Famous Jewish Sports Legends'?"
"Yes. Thank you."
Can I lol?...what the hell. lol.

That pamphlet would just contain a centerfold of Sandy Koufax.

Hmmm....well I'll try not to have high expectations then. Just feel like I have to read it at some point if only to understand the references people are making to it. :lame:

I've never seen airplane (had to look it up btw...jeez Maubs, always making me work on here) but the quote reminded me of this!

1. Go to meeting of my program's TA's for next year
2. Pretend like I am not interested in consuming adult beverages
3. Near end of function, commence rapidly consuming adult beverages
4. Upon finishing all available adult beverages at aforementioned function, travel with enjoyable fellow TA's to local public house
5. Profit!!!!!
6. Watch Bulls game; continue consuming more adult beverages
7. tl;dr everything that has happened in this thread since my last reading
8. "illegally" walk dog off-leash in major metropolitan area, willing to suffer any "consequences," i.e. a $30 ticket in very cavalier fashion. F* the police, NWA style
9.Finish watching American Gangster; continue respecting Denzel Washington.
10. Profit!! a second time
11. Wat?

Where are the ????'s?

I bid you adieu 2015. So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen goodbye. I will go back where I belong now. It was real, it was fun, it was real fun. y'all are true ballers, and I will always look up to you.

That just made me really sad. 🙁

Agreed. I had to force myself to read through the entirety since it was praised so much by med students/residents/physicians here on SDN. Regretted that decision...and that's why I never recommend it to others. Terrible writing and terribly boring.

Also, I hate most of the writings of Atul Gawande (gasp!). While some of his stuff is great (ex. using checklists), I feel that a lot of his other essays are pretty one-sided and don't present things in an unbiased way.

Thanks Avoid for clarifying that--I was just about to post the link. Hmm, that makes PSLF VERY attractive option. Just gotta find a public service option (supposedly county hospitals qualify?)

Anyway, re: stethoscopes, my cousins all told me my current Littmann Classic II will suffice...

Simple, but gets the job donef

I liked House of God. But I also liked Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse Five. Very similar senses of humor.

It sounds like at non-profit or public-owned hospital counts. According to wikipedia, "In 2003, of the roughly 3,900 nonfederal, short-term, acute care general hospitals in the United States, the majority—about 62 percent—were nonprofit. The rest included government hospitals (20 percent) and for-profit hospitals (18 percent)." So about 80% of hospitals might allow for loan forgiveness -- but you should probably verify before you start.

Again, from the FAQ:
Q21 How do I know if my employer is a "public service organization" that is an eligible employer for the PSLF Program?
A21 The term "public service organization" covers a broad range of employers, including any
federal, state, or local government organization or agency and most charitable non-profit
organizations. (February 3, 2010)

Honestly, I knew of the PSLF but I somehow didn't think docs would qualify. I am soooo excited about this as I plan on working at non-profit hospitals 🙂

I'm reminded of http://whitewhine.com/ .

😍 :biglove: c/o 2015 :biglove: 😍

I'm just a 2015 imposter, time for me to go back with my real ilk, the wanna-be oughta-be cack-suckin' p*ssy-eatin' prankstas who are not yet accepted to medical school.

fb...turn that frown upside down

Not whining; laughing at myself. I'm so James Dean, I got a ticket.......for walking my dog. Only a real rebel lives in a neighborhood where the cops have nothing better to do than write tickets for inappropriate dog walking 🙄. 8-9 blocks east or south you could find drug deals, prostitution, armed robberies and other shenanigans but that's not what matters to my local PD. They might as well put a white picket fence around the whole neighborhood.

I was going more self-deprecation than sentimentality; more "I should go" than "I must go." I have no illusions of making myself useful elsewhere, just trying to be less useless ITT, as y'all are entering a phase where I have nothing to contribute. You did just open the tvtropes floodgates, so I may actually disappear for a while

"Shane! Come back!"

never saw it

That's madness! I use to walk my dog in an urban area with no leash! I only had people yell at me from afar and threaten to call the cops. Cops must have even driven by me too... and never stopped. I did this for years.
*just looked - Apparently since 2001 it has been up to a $300 fine to walk your dog off leash. Oh well, my old puppy hated leases [she grew up without them because we lived in a rural area]... and loved pulling me to the ground when ever I did have her on lease. haha

Does someone have apartment hunting on the brain? :meanie:

See, that is what I thought. As long as you plan on working at a hospital, this plan seems amazing. And I would honestly rather go to the 330k school and not the 190k school, so if PSLF basically makes debt a moot issue... It sounds too good to be true.

There must be a catch. I'm going to see whether the financial aid people at both schools are willing to consult via phone.

I read into the IBR loan forgiveness programs quite a bit. Not to be a pessimist but do keep in mind these ideas.

No one has collected on it yet. When the government starts writing 100-200k checks we will see if they chose to alter this.

Three are no guarantees it will be around in 11 years. The law can be abolished anytime.

I would go to the school that gives you the beat opportunity and fit. I would not recommend making decisions based on this law. There are lots of gotcha type of things that can happen also. Where they say something was prepared or handled improperly and you are no longer eligible.

Best option is to pay the 15% and then put extra money into an investment account during the 10 year repayment, that way you can still pay off the remaining 100-200k if they ditch the program.

Also...residency counts. So it's more like 3-7 years making small, income-based repayments during residency, and then the remainder of the 10 years are spent making larger income-based repayments at a nonprofit hospital. You aren't restricted to a rural area or anything. The only catch is that you can't go into a private practice until the 10 years are up. So now I'm thinking everyone on SDN should just stfu about debt because it doesn't matter anymore now that this program exists

What do you mean by pay the 15%

I'm trying to decide between an OOS school I love that is 330k but a better fit in terms of location, curriculum, environment...everything...and an IS school I loved a much smaller amount that is 190k and has a traditional curriculum, letter grading, etc...everything is a worse fit and less awesome, but I wouldn't be miserable spending only 4 years there. If this PSLF program makes debt a moot point, then I'd go to the OOS school. I don't mind choosing amongst 80% of hospitals for 10years-minus-residency of employment...

Yes, this is the only catch that I've found so far. It's a scary one, though, for sure.

This was exactly how the financial aid director at NYMC gave his presentation. He said if you're not getting scholarships or grants, then your next best bet is to try to make payments toward the interest while you're in school (or if family can help with that) and then do income based repayment and the 10 public service at a non-profit, which your residency and fellowship training count towards as these are at non-profits.

Is making payments on the interest during med school an essential part of the PSLF program?

Honestly Sun I wouldn't be making huge decisions like that based on anything that is at the whim of politicians. Going to a higher priced school and banking on the fact that this program will be there seems like a very bad idea.

👍👍 The only guarantee is that the gov't will want to collect on its loans, regardless of the price of the dollar or (unlikely) how much they decide to reduce (or increase) physician compensation (through medicare etc.)

Hey, quick question. What type of jelly could I have that would make you super jelly? Strawberry? Grape?

I'm confused about what Flow did.

A picture i took is in a journal now. with my name cited. 🙂 I was tempted to start a thread asking everyone if I should update med schools about my minor awesomeness. 😛

Have you guys tried Loganberry?

Though that tends to just be a really Buffalo/Niagara/Toronto thing.

Dooooo it 👍 hahaha, it's fun to toot your own horn once in a while!

Oh, FYI, Geekling cooperated last night. Looks great, with the most perfectly round head I've ever seen. 😀

Nicely done - you goin?
Not sure. I'm pretty happy with Emory, except I really didn't wanna break 200k of debt from md school =\. So I'm gonna wait and see what HMS fin aid looks like.
i disapprove of the present/infinitive tense of this verb.
Which tense would you prefer? =P

Congrats bro.

I guess it depends on your career aspirations if the debt ends up being higher there. But the name may be worth the extra $ if you want a competitive specialty.

Name --- marketability.

Good job though. Big win.

I'm at work, I'm bored, and my breath stinks because of the vast amounts of coffee I must consume not to slip into what we like to call comatose boredatose.

Holy crap. You just described my experience exactly.

Without coffee, I'm not sure I could make it.
