Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a response and they said it'll be more like 2-2.5 hours. Gah! I don't think she'll behave for that long, in fact, I'm pretty sure she won't. I just really wanted my baby there. 🙁 It'll be up to hubster if she comes or goes to daycare that day, because he's the one that'll have to wrangle her if she gets rammy.

benadryl timed perfectly for mom to walk across the stage?

I'm looking at the street view in Google for the place on main campus our WCC is going to be held. It looks like there's a little flower garden along the side of the building. Looks like the perfect place to take a kid that's acting up inside, but again, it'll be up to hubs.

I really hope I wasn't like that before I got chosen...be honest now...

What's funny is that the people who actually get chosen to be mods seem to be normal and healthy and not at all like the rule nazi/overly paternal peacekeeper type that has annoyed me so much recently. Which is good; I think people who seek internet power too much tend to abuse it once they get it. And I'm so very glad that I will never be considered normal enough to be asked to be a mod  Saves me the awkwardness of thinking of an excuse about not having enough time or something : )

i can think of one person who fits your description who was made a mod. no, i'm not divulging this information on SDN.

Bleargh on April Fool's Day?

j/k. well, I'm sure a few slip thru the cracks 😎

Also, Daisy is a ****ing beast on words with friends. She just made 5 words at once for a 28-point play with a triple-word box:

P...O...T...T...E...D
.....S...A...I....D....

My head asplode. I really thought I had a chance at winning until that play. I understand 'ti,' but since when are 'os,' 'ta,' and 'ed' words?!
>: ( THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!

daisy is ridiculous at WWF, and i always get **** for letters when i play her. it's a combination that always leads to embarrassment in the score department.

Disclaimer: I know this is way too far in the future for me to be worrying about this.

So... it looks like I could do my ENTIRE set of third year clerkships at the big community/teaching hospital a mile and a half from our house. I already knew they take students from Temple, Drexel, PCOM, Jeff and a few schools that have PA programs around here, but what I didn't notice was that they have programs for all of the standard clerkships, including the 4 weeks of Neuro (Temple does a 4 weeks of Neuro/4 weeks of elective block in third year). I was already planning on doing surgery, ob/gyn and maybe medicine there because the hours are so much heavier and my commute would be so much shorter. Now I'm wondering if I should do all of them there.

Oh wait, it looks like, presently, I'd have to do psych and peds elsewhere. Either way, it looks like I could do family medicine and neuro there, which is another 10 weeks of vastly shorter commute.

I really think we'll be staying in this area for our forever house, too, and maybe eventually working as an attending at this same hospital. Temple also assigns rotation sites via lottery but 1, I was told students with children would be given first pick because of their additional responsibilities, and 2, I would imagine I could switch with people anyway, if they allow that, since they'd probably rather rotate somewhere closer to where they live (most students live in center city or Roxborough/Manayunk). I know I'd get really awesome clinical experience at Temple, though, because of the patient population. I'm definitely planning on doing my EM rotation during 4th year there, but these third year ones, I don't know. Gah!

please see disclaimer. 😉

i'm sure it'll work out just the way you want it to. i know at my school people with kids get special consideration, and trading/swapping sites is allowed so you'll be able to work it out one way or another.

In my experience it's pretty easy to get rotations when/where you want. Assuming your class is decent sized class there's a wide enough variation of interests where there isn't too much fighting for sites/times (we do rotation swapping here as well, which is helpful). Possible exception of Christmas time where everyone does battle royale to get a cushy rotation (psych).

Ah, good point. Chicklet's birthday is also right before Christmas so I'd really like more time then. What else qualifies as a "cushy" rotation in 3rd year? Family Medicine doesn't look too bad but I could be wrong.

Family med and neuro both have reputations here for having a pretty light workload. Electives can be super cushy as well (path, rads) but if you're planning on going into a non-core rotation field you should use the elective for that.

Presently, I'm leaning more towards an Ob/Gyn or Peds subspecialty. I'm not sure I can use my 3rd year elective for that, though, and I know I'll have the opportunity for those 3rd year as well. I was thinking maybe ENT for that elective. Temple has EM and Rad rotations standard in 4th year.

There's a good chance you can use electives on peds subspecialities as long as you do your core peds rotation first. But since those are fellowships it's not necessary to use your 3rd year electives on them, so do whatever sounds fun for it. I wouldn't worry about it now though, they'll explain all their rotation rules/regs during second year sometime🙂.

I'm mostly just thinking out loud. 🙂 I know part of 4th year you have to pick 2 or 3 options for rotations. One of them is something like intensive or critical care, and you can use medical, surgical, cardiac, pediatric, neonatal, etc. for that, so I was thinking I'd choose that then do a NICU rotation. That's just what I'm thinking right now, since it's 3 1/2 years away.

While all of you try to figure out your third-year elective rotations, I'm trying to figure out the parking situation at my school.

i'm trying to remember what city my school is in.

Man I'm sick for a few days and I end up misssing out on so many topics in our thread 🙁 womp womp. 😕

Just got accepted to UTHSC-San Antonio off the waitlist. Now I have no clue what to do...

Parking is $400 a semester at my school. But F no will I park on the street. I don't entirely expect someone to make eyes at my 15 year old ford station wagon with paint chipping all over, but I'd rather not have it swiped and taken to a chop shop.

Congrats, right?! What's making you torn?

congrats Ursa!!

haha I was in that same situation...I was content with the school I had been accepted at, and then I was faced with the prospect of attending a different school off the waitlist. Merely changing all the plans I had made or all the expectations in my head of what things would be like was so unappealing that it was just unfair to the waitlist school  I tried to not have my laziness bias my decision, but it probably did a lot

god damn that's cheap

Oh, I don't think I told you guys. I got a brace for my wrist. The ortho thinks I sprained it or have tendinitis. I go back in 2 weeks for a follow-up. Also, the brace looks awesome and like it should shoot a laser or hold a switchblade.

And I got an interesting, unrelated diagnosis. I mentioned I twisted my ankle when I fell (which I did 2 weeks ago, but I doubt that's when I hurt my wrist since it didn't start to really hurt until this weekend), and that I twist them all the time and they go out on me for no reason. He asked me to bend my fingers a few ways to see how far they'd go and said it seems like I have hypermobility syndrome. It's why I'm so flexible (go ahead, make jokes) and why my ankles suck. I never would have guessed those things were related. It's pretty much benign but I'm more prone to sprains and dislocations. I thought it was kinda cool.

Parking is a little less than that at my school. I'd be more worried about the super aggressive meter maids in my school's area than I would be about someone messing with my car.

Congrats to Ursa!!!

Parking is $40/month at my school. And we get public transit passes. 😀

It kind of irks me that there's another user using the handle Daisy2 and asking low-class questions about med schools that are easy to get into. She's sullying my name.

Do I sense fisticuffs in the near future?

Daisy you need to take a lesson from this. There can only be one.

I'm torn because I've already made some plans for College Station, the biggest of which is that I signed a lease on a house. My fiance and I found a house with a backyard (we have dogs) that we really loved, so we put a deposit down and signed the paperwork. Now, I'll have to find someone to sub-lease. But I do like UTSA's curriculum and reputation 🙄 more than A&M's. A huge concern right now is also my fiance's career, and which city would be better for it. ugggggghghghghghg

i'm guessing the ortho overlooked the fact that you're pregnant too... ever heard of relaxin?

i've always wondered if world class gymnasts and the like have used this hormone as a performance enhancing drug.

I've seen someone named Whimsy post a few times, and it always confuses me because I think it's Whimsical. 🙁

Dude, this is my second kid and I am a biology nerd. Of course I've heard of relaxin. 😛 And he was fully aware I'm pregnant, as the brace was all he was comfortable doing for me at this first visit. He didn't really want to do multiple x-ray views and can't give me an anti-inflammatory. After I de-fetus, if it's still bothering me, he'll be able to do more for me.

And as far as the hypermobile stuff goes, I have been able to bend my fingers the way he used to diagnose me for as long as I can remember, and I've always been surprisingly flexy and my ankles easily twist or sprain. Sometimes they just go out when I'm standing. That's actually what prompted him to suggest it in the first place. He did say I might have an easier time in deliver because of it, though. That'd be nice.

That long? Really? Lame.
Yeah they said it's usually over between 12 and 12:30.

you should see what kind of contortitionist things you can do right after delivery.

Ok, I totally know who at least 1 of the wannabe-mods is.
