Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I totally agree. While I don't know any BS/MD's personally, I have friends who know some and hear all sorts of other anecdote that just to me screams of entitled smart children. I, too, have found my main inspirations or, perhaps more correctly, confirmations of my desire to be a doctor during college.
There were signs all along that this was the right career for me, including when I was a kid, but I never had some epiphany. In fact, when people said I should go to medical school or law school or whatever, I blew them off. I got tired of being pigeon-holed as "the smart one" or whatever.

This is probably why I majored in theatre in college, though by the time I was halfway through senior year I knew without a doubt that I didn't want to do it anymore. I would just like to go back in time and smack my 16 year old self around until she promised not to apply ED to a ridiculously expensive, reputably stingy private university and only go somewhere that gave her a full ride.

can someone explain to me why that user Premedinho was marked as a troll? Alright, she was stupid to ask about cardiology, but i guess any new user on here would ask something like that... seems kind of harsh.

I think we either get a lot of trolls on this forum because it's so large, or we see some of the same questions/attitudes so often that it becomes almost tantamount to being a troll. The list that one member posted in that thread about each of the hot-buttons that person posted in the same topic really do make it look like the perfect "intellectual trolling" attempt. -- too perfect, as it was almost obviously trolling. Also, if an IP trace runs a match to another member, that could be a sign.

I know what you mean about there being signs throughout life. I didn't really figure it out until later in high school, but, like you, I never had the "I was giving CPR to a baby in Africa and knew I wanted to do this for the rest of eternity." moment.

Hahah, that's high tech, I feel embarrassed then for that guy

Yeah I used to be a senior mod on a rather large forum. Once we identified spammers/trolls as having the same IP, we just banned the IP for good. Could also do a username lookup by IP address and reverse. Pretty useful, since you can also get address/location/name information from a who.is search, so anyone threatening the group could be traced, if they were posting from home.

I despise Ted Danson and Funkhouser.

i agree about danson. seriously, F YOU TED DANSON. but funkhouser? yeah, annoying, but hilarious. and blossom as a mental-health sister? priceless.

this technology feeds my paranoia and ==>the dollhouse.

I should specify, the address was that of their ISP, the location was the city of the ISP, and the name was iffy, but it did sometimes show the name of the subscriber to the connection. Federal law mandates that, if I remember correctly. So if any mods on SDN wanted to know your mommy's name when you were at home, they could. In dorms, it's much more difficult (I don't know how to do it).

ISP=internet service provider (i.e. comcast/charter/atnt)

If you're truly paranoid, you should set up proxies in foreign countries. But that is a huge pain and bogs your internet speed.

:wow: curbye, let's meet up, i'm interested in doing research on paranoia, we can publish an article- best of all, i'll even let you take 1st author, wouldn't that be great?

lol, but in all seriousness, i think SDN can't legally release identities of people, it's in the fine print; so you can sleep easy.

Yeah, SDN works pretty hard to preserve anonymity.

Hi guys! I am class of 2015 , new to this forum. What a great resource for application stuff.

I made a thread about tihs, but is anyone on here planning on working full time while applying? I will be working 50 ish hours a week starting june (will have primary submitted before work starts), and i'm starting to panic that I won't be able to do secondaries amidst all this...

I wouldn't worry about this too much. In general working full time is less of a time commitment than doing school full time and studying. It is definitely less stressful.

My biggest concern with working full time while applying and during my gap year is that it will affect my EFC when I fill out my fafsa. I could see that as potentially being a problem for me.

just to ease your mind a bit here. Some schools realize that your income is going to be higher then normal due to working. Therefore they sometimes allow you to fill out something that basically is a projected income which they use. I only know of a few schools who do this (ucd being one and i think youre aplying there). So dont worry too much. You would only have 1/2 a year of extra income...its probably not going to break the efc unless you get close to 60k or so.

Thanks I didn't know that some schools do that. I am applying to Davis so that is good to know too. I started to think about this when I was denied the fee assistance program. Based on my parents income I would have qualified, but because I work ~20 hours a week I went over the maximum allowed income. Which is kind of BS because I am 28 years old, a single parent, and have to work for obvious reasons. The fact they even include my parents income when I'm this old is ridiculous.

do you guys think me volunteering for a month (starting now) before i submit my app may 1st (DO) will really make a difference? i would continue to volunteer of cousre, but i'm just wondering if i should try to cram this in right now.

It can't hurt, but a month of volunteering isn't going to make much of a difference. If you are currently light on hours then it might help more in the form of an update letter later on though.

the only way it might be useful is for updating later in the cycle. Its not useful for your amcas app but as you will find out, you will be likely writing a few (or many) LOIs to several schools as well as updating them with new activities to show interest. I did a few new activities partly for this reason (as well as in case i had to reapply). I found it useful but also its an activity i always wanted to do but couldnt while i was in school.

Wow, just came home from a full day of shadowing a pediatric surgeon.

Pretty cool, I got to scrub in and watch all the cases. Everything is so small, though. I don't know if I could do it.

what were the cases?

Good thinking with the update/LOIs. Thanks guys.

saw a few actually, one was 18 months, another 3, another 4.

bilateral hernia and inguinal hernia I got too see 🙂

one of the kids was supposed to get a circumsion, but the doctor was kind of uncomfortable with the idea of giving it because his scrotum and foreskin was rigid and aregular and large relative to the kid's urinary organ.

He said if he did it, the kid would have a crooked penis.

He was very frustrated while looking at it, "how do you pee out of this thing?"

wow. sucks to be those kids.

My apologies guys, but after a recent reconsideration of our terms of service, we have to be more stringent on our off topic thread policy. This unfortunately includes social threads like this one...As such, this thread is now being moved to the Lounge.

In other news... my non-science letter may not end up very good. I should have asked this professor for a letter earlier--she has >400 students/semester and I don't think she remembers me very well any more =(. The next-most-recent non-science professor was from over a year ago!

ha, my non science letter was from 5 years ago, the next closest was from 7 years ago

I think I may hit up the other non-science teacher (he's technically not a Ph.D or Ed.D), just to see his reaction. 😀 My other two should be really strong, so as long as the best non-science doesn't say anything especially disparaging, I should be fine, I hope.

man i still have to ask ppl for letters lol. i guess im just assuming they will say yes. I probably dont want to approach this application process with the same last minute tendencies as i apply to life in general.

edit: haven't been here in a while, we got moved??

dont worry too much just explain the situation and ask if they can write a strong letter. My non sci letter was from 4 years ago. I went to the prof. she said she didnt remember me that well but would meet. She looked up my grade in her class from 05, saw i was the top student, and then i told her my story, she read my PS, I explained how I needed a nonsci letter, etc.... In the end she wrote me probably my best letter and was super helpful🙂. Just make sure your prof. is willing and itll be fine.

I hope this is an april fools joke. This is going to mess with my forum rotation.

It damn well better be - This is probably the dumbest decision ever. The idea was for when more people come to SDN this summer for the application cycle, they will hit up the Pre-Allo forum, and then join our thread. With the way it is now, they won't see this thread, since new members hardly explore out of the pre-med forums. In all honesty, from what I was aware, I thought the moderators liked to preserve these Class social threads in Pre-Allo to prevent the outgrowth of other social threads. Why not keep the class threads in pre-allo as a location for premeds to socialize, and cut down on the remainder of social threads?

Look at the condition right now on the pre-allo forum. Despite all these drastic measures to transplant the class threads into All students, new social threads are still popping up.

dumbest decision ever. 👎thumbdown👎thumbdown

edit: If this really is an april fools, i really got punk'd

this technology feeds my paranoia and ==>the dollhouse.

Just use a proxy server, I use them to continue visiting sites that have IP-banned me

So... anyway, I just OWNED an AAMC practice test. Going to take another one tomorrow.

Well good luck! When are you taking the MCAT?

I had one of those a month before my test too. One of my long time friends coincidentally called me that day and talked me through it. You got it geekmama! Rocking that FL should help you get through the hump too.

Are you guys confused about this whole class thread move thing? I'm so confused. It's throwing my whole night routine off.

yeah this sucks. why did our threads get moved but that stupid thread about respected SDN members didn't get moved...

It's an april fools joke. That, or the moderation of this forum is way wackier than I give 'em credit for =P. If SDN needs anything, it's forum and sub-forum consolidation, so I doubt the most applicable threads to be pre-allow would be thrown out into the proverbial boondocks.

geekchick, make it go back to normal pleeeeeez!

I don't know whose brilliant idea this was, but it's def not brilliant. 👎

Why would a "pre-medical" thread featuring only pre-meds be moved to All-Students? Beats me.

Make a Pre-medical socialization sub-forum as FlowRate said.

edit:
holy ****, how do you have 2600 posts now floaton? i had more than you at one time like a month ago lol

It can't be real because SDN said the lounge was going to be closed at midnight ET and it's way past that. Nothing's happened yet. It's just a matter of when they're going to move things back. Hopefully by tomorrow morning so my whatever normalcy in my life can resume.

*looks around* i'm so confused 🙁

ALSO What the EXPLETIVE! cutemd gone, all posts deleted?

methinks the dollhouse is starting...

yeah this is stupid. they should just change the terms of service so that the "Class of ..." threads can be in the pre-allo forum.
