Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok, any other ways to combine? For example, I listed my new mexico trip as non-clinical volunteering (service trip), should I describe my poster presentation there too instead of making a new addon for posters, same with my research, honors thesis, and poster together?

I think anything research related should be highlighted if you have room. If not then maybe consider grouping together posters, presentations etc... by project? not sure if that is the best way but I definitely think clinical experience>research>volunteer work>>leadership>>>>>clubs

shouldnt all you east coast people be sleeping about now....ill take care of that for you guys

i gotta get up too early tomorrow and get my final volunteer hours and possibly a letter of rec, then head to work for my momma shes been workin hard while i was studying for the mcats, time to repay her (and call it a mothers day gift 🙂)

i guess i should get a few hours in. i'm jst not sleepy tonight. if i just do cardio i don't get sleepy, but if i lift and do cardio i'm sleepy.

I'm meeting with an LOR writer too

when i'm a DO i'm going to have a service for pre-meds where they can pay me 50 bucks for a DO letter, because i'm having a hard time finding one dammit.

That is a money making idea. You would be a "consultant"

exactly.

quick question, who the hell grows up wanting be an anesthesiologist because that's what they want to do, as opposed to just making a big bank roll?

I think anesthesia lacks the kinda patient care I would enjoy, but I work in an OR with a lot of awesome anesthesia doctors. They are some of the happiest doctors in the hospital (the money probably helps and I've heard some of them say that they are kinda glad they don't have to put up with some the patient's BS that other docs deal with, the hours are good too). The OR is a cool environment, you work with a lot of the same people as part of a team, which is appealing to some people. It's appealing to me, but I think I would pick surgery b/c you get the clinic & the OR.

yeah i'm sure it is an appealing lifestyle. i might have to call one to shadow for the DO letter if none of the other local ones pan out. probably the most boring specialty to shadow.

Not necessarily, you will have a great vantage point to watch surgeries and unlike the surgeon the anesthesia doc has time to talk to you about what is happening. Also, the anesthesia doc may be in the room with several different surgeons from diff specialties through out the course of a day. You might actually get to see more than if you shadowed a surgeon.

I shadowed a anesthesia doc that did pain management. It was really interesting he actually did minor procedures like percutaneous disk decompressions that were interesting to watch. He also saw a lot of patients... that were awake the whole time 😀

Edit: anesthesiologist do a lot of procedural stuff too like ET tubes, epidurals, and nerve blocks. all pretty cool to watch

that's good to know.

i cant fall asleep. i think i might do what i did first semester of my junior year... i had insomnia every sunday night, so that i couldn't fall asleep. so i would stay up and go to the gym at 6, right when it opened. haze myself there, and then pick up a greasy delicious breakfast on the way home. eat it. then pass out til noon when i had to get up for class. except, this time i'll have to get up for work.

Exactly. You also get to follow them to the holding area where they talk to the patients and their families and explain to them what's going to happen in the OR. Their top priority is to calm their nerves and make them feel comfortable so they do get quite a bit of patient interaction.

You see them set-up and prep for the entire procedure, while the surgeon just kind of walks in when it's time to roll. They're probably the chillest docs I've met and they'll just chit chat with you and everyone else in the room.

I'd recommend shadowing an anesthesiologist if you can.

Our anesthesiologist where I work is awesome. He is very involved with the patients before they are transported to the OR. He even helps move beds around along with his actual duties of administering meds and such. He has provided me with a lot of words of wisdom throughout my time there

its true, i once got a girl preggo by whacking to her video!

Good work guys, I like the laidback nature of this thread.

Glad everyone had/is having a good Friday night, and not posting on a message board. 👍

the PS is harder to start than i thought....

"When I jumped over the kitchen table to save my grandmother from choking I was only 10 years old. It was at this moment I first realized I was meant for greatness. By the age of 10.5 I started my first charity to serve the underpriviliged...

... As I approach the end of my college career I feel as if my experiences have culminated in making me into the most b!tchin' med school applicant for the class of 2015."

See? It isn't so hard, just fill in the middle with whatever 😀

IV, you make a good point.

rhino, you make an even greater point.

hahaha

just got called in to work (at a hospital) for an emegency lap appy... I can't wait until I'm gettin' paid $$$$ for this stuff in the future.

On another note, I finally requested all of my transcripts for AMCAS. I have attended 5 schools over 10 years. . . what a pain in the butt.

you an OR tech or something? And the transcripts get worse sadly. because after you send them to amcas, you have to send them to schools, then you have to send them to schools again if those 1st set of transcripts didnt have your degree verified... I went to 3 schools and it was such a pain 🙁,

I actually just got off work, working retail and other ****ty jobs really makes you appreciate the fact you will be in school and have a stable job soon lol

i had to get 4 schools within 5 years, i feel you on the transcript hate.

😱 sounds like this transcript stuff will only get worse then...

I worked as an EMT for a year full time then used that to get a job in the hospital. I had a choice between the OR and the ER. I picked the OR. Basically I'm part CNA, transporter, and equipment jocky. Mostly I set up the equipment for the surgery, get the patient, shave/prep the surgical site, position the patient with the doc and nurse, and then I just sit on the sideline and watch while they do surgery. It has actually been a great job will I get through school.

i wish i had that job and that amount of clinical exposure.

just checked and 2 of my 4 transcripts have been received

damn im going on monday to just order my first set of 4 to be sent out how long does it usually take for amcas to get them?

I had to work today from 11-7:30 pm at a hospital. After work I ate dinner with my gf. Then I went to the lab where I'm working on a project to finish what I thought was going to be ~1 hour of work. Once I got to the lab I got called back to the hospital for an hour and a half for the urgent lap appy. So I got back to the lab about midnight and nothing went right (its been f___ed all week) and now it is 4 am and I'm just getting home. I'm still on call until 7 am.

Between school, work, and research I haven't seen my kid in 5 days.

Instead of a personal statement, thousands of dollars of fees, secondary essays, and an interview I wish an adcomm would just shadow me for a day... they couldn't even keep up.

edit: Rockstar energy drinks are awesome 😀

hey guys, for the work/activities, how many of the 1300 characters r u guys using?

so, i know i'm late on this but we just got netflix and arrested development is awesome.

the sense i get is the less the better

yeah, im feeling the same way, i just dont want it to be too short or anything

so far each is about 300 characters, so just like 2ish sentences?

hey guys, for the work/activities, how many of the 1300 characters r u guys using?

Some I used all 1300. Others only 2-3 sentances. With all essays in this process it's about quality not quantity. Say what you need to and b done. Dont bore them with stupid details about how life changing pushin beds around was because we all know that's a bunch of crap. But on the same token if you had interesting experiences or want to go more in depth feel free too

yeah im working through it right now, and i just realized that i have the worst activities anyone can have.

i dont have any dedication to one specific thing, but was jumping around stuff as opportunities arose. i dont have any awards either, mostly because my school doesnt give out any lol. Deans list awards doesnt even exist at my school

no worries I've heard that adcomms don't care about deans/provost list at all. Everyone who gets into medical school has these awards b/c we all have good gpa's.
