Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i had the same problem, but i just left it. if they ask me, the place i worked at has my records of the accurate stuff so i dont really care whats in the letter

Yeah, I just don't want adcomms to think I'm inflating/exaggerating/lying about my research experience. But it's cool, now that the dates are non-definite, I'll be fine. One LOR to go and my LOR's will be set.

PS, started writing this reply 10 hours ago and then passed out (not drunk, just tired)

I see this at the top of the thread every time I come here and it still makes me laugh.

I checked the site obsessively when I was waiting - I totally get you. Also, because my life is crappy, they didn't upload scores on my test date (6/18/09) until really late at night, maybe 11 pm? So I was in my research lab, refreshing that screen every half hour, basically ignoring everything else. My PI was so not pleased...

But your practice scores were good so you should be just fine! Also, might I suggest:

(Though to be honest, I totally need(ed) one too)

Mine came out like 12 hours early so I couldn't focus at school the rest of the day. It was like taking another pill that I'll get in trouble for posting here (starts with an f and ends with ckitol)

Also, do ya'll ever have the problem where you start really getting into a book but then you think in prose similar to the author's? Maybe that's just one of my weirdnesses, but it's not that great because now I think in "House of God" and talk a bit more like one of my friends who speaks like a douchebag because I've been hanging out with him a lot (he's not actually a douche, just sounds like it when he talks lol).

Actually, I know exactly what you're talking about. If I've been reading a lot of a certain type of writing, it's really hard to avoid emulating it in my own. (probably should avoid reading scientific papers and editing my PS in the same day, in that case).

where's rhino?
Needed a little SDN break last night... feeling pretty stress free today 🙂

creepy.
I gave a dude who followed my car through the parkinglot so he could ask me for money for food/housing some food yesterday =). You should have given that dude some food! haha.
you went for it, right?
Sounds like a good deal to me!

I just had a thought while reading through diversity pages. They all have a picture of a black dude. Why not something that will raise applications, like lipstick lesbians? Hellloooo secondary $$$$

dude, no. I kept my sandals.

sup y'all

that OOS for indiana is very deceiving. I would recommend not applying there but its worth a shot if you like the area.

as far as other schools, well excluding the top schools id say...

schools to maybe add

Loyola
tufts
suny downstate
rochester
case western
ohio state
univ. cincinnati
vanderbilt (maybe its a "top" school but they only give a 2ndary if they will interview you. So its well worth the 30 bucks to add it)

Idk if you just dont want to go to NYC, since it seems like you avoided there, but i thought id add a few of them in there.

If you had to remove a few id say

aecom
indiana
evms

I've got OSU, cincy, vandy, and case on my list now. May take case of though...

I removed aecom & indiana.

I was wondering why you suggest removing evms? Bad impression?

EVMS takes little OOS, their OOS number is misleadingly high again because they count the strong linkage they have with their post bac students who are OOS. Its highly doubtful you would even attend there over another school (id assume), not exactly a school thats going to wow you in many ways. Once agian if you love the area or think that you would be happy there dont let me stop you. But if you are just using it as a random safety as i was, then there are much better choices for an OOS student like youself with solid grades, a decent mcat, and a likely interesting backstory to play the im interesting card everyone loves. These are just my impressions after applying like youself to so many random schools and seeing the mistakes i did make. Honestly i would be surprised if you dont end up in cali. I m pretty sure some uc will accept you or USC and i wouldnt be surprised if ucd or uci or both didnt interview you and accept you.

I see, yeah it just seemed like a relatively safe place to apply. Thanks for the info, it is extremely helpful hearing your experience. It is so hard to pick schools solely based on MSAR data and the schools website.

I have a lot of hope that I'll be able to stay in CA, but I know that it is a gamble for any applicant even for those with stats better than mine. Having a few other solid options oos would be nice to have just in case 🙂

one of my boys is back from fishing in AK. should be an interesting night. i hope i can top my earlier night this week... hahaha. i'm not counting on that.

it isn't too overly optimistic that you can make each day better than the last 🙂

AK would be awesome to visit, as long as I don't end up like that dummy in the movie "into the wild." What a F-ing dumbazz that guy was.

Gary Coleman, Denis Hopper, and ....

You know these things run in threes.

Or just about everyone in the fake Barrow in 30 Days of Night. Yikes!

I would LOVE to go on an Alaskan cruise, even if they are supposedly full of old people. 😀

haha i highly doubt u can top that, wishful thinking though

yeah my friend made me watch that but it was the worst movie ive ever seen. i really hope that's not the way it went down, because unfortunately, its kind of ******ed

It was a crappy movie... my summary of the plot is as follows:

rich kid gets bent out of shape b/c his pops was a player and cheated on his mom. Rich kid feels his whole life is a sham. He decides to ditch all of his belongings, car, ID, & money. Bums around like a hippy for a while. Rejects every single person along the way until he ends up in Alaska living in a bus in the wilderness. Gets stuck out there. Eats berries and lives off the land... until he eats the wrong berry and dies.

Supposedly the guy kept trying to leave by going south but couldn't cross the river that swelled in the winter... however 3 miles north was a road he could have used to get to civilization. Dummy should have brought a map or compass if he was going to go "into the wild."

All I could think during that movie is what a ****.

yeah haha, sometimes i wonder how can some of these movies even get the budget approval to be filmed....go figure

hey guys i have a question for the work/activities

when entering stuff, in the description, should we also be explaining how it affected us and what we learned? or should we leave that for the potential interviews, and just say what we did in a brief statement

The last movie I turned off before it was over was the hurt locker... and that turd won best picture

I thought both avatar and especially the blindside were better movies.

I've heard people say they have done it both ways. I chose to highlight my most meaningful/important aspects of the activity and bullet pointed them. I chose not to discuss the meaning of the activity to me, and think it will be better explained in an interview.

I think most activities are best explained with bullet points b/c adcoms already know what they entail. If you try to explain the "deep meaning" of your job as a cashier at an ice cream store (just a random example) then you run the risk of sounding like you're (excuse me you are 😛) BSing.

Edit: of course if you are good at writing and have enough room then explaining the effect the activity had on you could be a positive.

yeah i dont think im a great writer but whatver, im just writing it as it comes to me

got my hands an an MSAR and the US rankings book (the US one was at my local bookstore), and its so lame

all the oos friendly schools have like 9k+ applications received lol

not all... just the ones in locations where people actually want to live

I specifically targeted oos friendly schools that received fewer applicants. I think I would prefer to live in a mid-sized town where I won't accrue a huge debt to pay for the cost of living. Besides, most of the things I like to do are easier to do if I don't live in a city like NYC. I like to go mountain biking, surf (gotta stay in CA or get into miami), & snowboard. I also like having a car and would prefer not to use public transportation for everything. So schools like MCW, Iowa, U. wisconsin, creighton, osu, cincy, vermont, vcu, etc... don't sound so bad to me.

What!?!? Hurt Locker was gripping.

What!?!? Hurt Locker was gripping.

If at the end of the movie they caught Osama Bin Laden and had to tear through an army of terrorists to get to him then the movie might have been better . What was the plot of the movie? I couldn't find it. They just seemed to be attempting to show what a soldiers life in Iraq was like and in the end the "big" conclusion the guy came to was that he did it for the adreneline rush and normal life was boring.... zzzzzz snooze fest.

I guess I should mention that I thought the movie jarhead blew too.

avatar? avatar was garbage! it was the same story as like dances with wolves and had some similarities to pocahontas lol....yes it was visually stunning, but the storyline was garbage/lame/predictable

the dances with wolves comparison was actually pretty good 👍. I liked dances with wolves.

I agree Avatar wasn't great b/c of the plot, but it was also nominated for best picture and I thought it was better than the hurt locker.

I would have voted for the blindside, but I don't think the academy likes to let "feel good" stories win. It was an infinitely better story (that happened to be true) that got me emotionally invested and had a huge inspirational pay off in the end. Plus it had football in it 🙂

Edit: also Sandra Bullock is hot with blonde hair and a southern accent, and the movie was pretty funny in parts.

The book The Omnivore's Dilemma was better than the movie IMO

& meet the Fockers = 👍👍

so I haven't really been concerned with attending Cornell-Qatar in regards to matching.....but I'm starting to think that maybe ignorance is bliss and that I should be.

I've been meaning to ask you... why cornell-qatar? The middle east is just that appealing?

i'm about to mow the lawn, then go to work! its going to be SO awesome, compared to jetskiing, drinking, cooking out, and enjoying the long weekend like the rest of america!
