Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You HAVE to get deep dish pizza. Gino's east is amazing, Lou Malnatis is good too. My favorite is Giordanos but theyre going bankrupt so I don't know if they'll be open.

If you want to do touristy things, definitely go to Sears tower (I will never call it the Willis tower), Millennium Park and Michigan Ave. The museums are also amazing (Field museum, Museum of Science and Industry). You could also hit up the Shedd aquarium and Navy Pier.

I personally am a huge Cubs fan so I would go to Wrigley and see a game. The ballpark is historic as well.

If you like improv, definitely hit up some of the numerous improv clubs. Second City is the most famous, notable alumni including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and pretty much anyone who has been on SNL.

If you're there end of June to beginning of July, you should hit up the Taste of Chicago. You can buy tickets and exchange them for portions of food from vendors all around the city. They also have good music depending on the day, and fireworks.

And there's just soooooo many amazing restaurants!

I can go on and on and on haha. Most of this is mainstream stuff, but probably what you would go to on your first trip there. Let me know if you want more!

Wow seems like a lot of stuff to do. What about the nightlife? Any good bars/clubs? The only time I've been to Chicago was when I was in high school (I have family there so its definitely on my list of areas to apply) but it was during the winter and me + snow = :nono: so I don't know if I'd go there over any Cali schools (if I were to be so lucky).

Haha unfortunately I was a sheltered suburban kid. I only went to the city maybe once every other month, and I was NEVER able to spend the night down town. That's what having Indian parents does for you 🙁 I also go to school out of state, so I haven't been to the city in a while.

But for nightlife you can check out metromix chicago. They have really good recommendations!

Wow, sounds good! I'm thinking maybe 4 days/3 nights, so I'll probably only have time to do the really obvious stuff. Pizza is a given. I've had New York, so we'll see how Chicago stacks up :meanie:

Thanks! I've heard Loyola has a beautiful campus.

Hey, the obvious stuff is obvious for a reason 🙂 Can't go wrong with it!

Like phnerd, I'm also from the suburbs and didn't get to experience the nightlife till college. Whenever I visit, I always have an amazing time. There are a lot of great bars/clubs open (some great ones I've been to include Sound-bar, Vision, and Transit). Unfortunately, being Chicago, drink prices are way too much compared to my college town.

Also, me + snow = 😀 ...I can't imagine living somewhere without it.

Love the avatar. Sucks we lost tonight, but we'll still take the series!

gone were the ochem-II + lab and phy-I + lab ... expected all A+
summer: phy-2 + mcat + application

Congrats on finishing Ochem2. 👍

I look forward to removing that weight from my shoulders tomorrow.
Good luck!
It was insane for me, included just about everything from chp.11 to chp.30 in McMurry 7th edition... Lab was another nightmare, prof was crazy... sooo happy they're now things of the past 😍..

Ditto! I feel like no matter how hard the exam is, tomorrow will still be the best. day. EVER.
Good luck to us! And anyone else with finals this week :luck:

Found out that I'm getting 10 hours cut from work for no apparent reason. This sucks because I barely make enough money as it is and I hate having to call my mom for help. 🙁
What is so frustrating is that I absolutely love this job and its going to be a big portion of my PS but I just hate how there's all this crap keeping me from doing good work. Plus, how am I supposed to pay for secondaries and interviews if I'm not making any money. This is so freaking frustrating 😡

Pequods >>>>>>>>> *

That crust is a perfect combination of caramelized cheese and crack.

http://www.pequodspizza.com/

There's also the Chosen Few picnic + boat cruise July 9th for those that love house music. 🙂

Kuma's Corner is also good if you're jonesin' for a burger, but don't go there on a weekend because no way in hell would I wait hours for a burger.

Can't believe I've never had Pequods...heard A LOT of great things about it.

Seems like c/o 2016 is going to be known for great taste in food

I always find it weird how everyone in their 3rd/4th years are taking orgo. At the UCs its a 2nd year class taken alongside the death that is biochem and molecular biology. Definitely a weeder course. Of course, I took O-Chem at a CC before transferring but O-chem is O-chem no matter where you go 😛

I am such a foodie, its ridiculous. I wouldn't be able to stand to go to a med school in a city without good food. Its a requirement!😀

Eh. Intro Bio (molecular) and Gen Chem are the weeders here, so most people that make it through their first year stick with it. O-Chem here is more manageable than other places, but it's definitely hard to get more than one std. dev. above the mean. It's all 2nd/3rd year students.

Oh most definitely, wish they put some restaurant reviews in the MSAR 😀

Same with my school. Sad that intro bio and chem have to be weed-outs, but I suppose not everyone is cut out for the pre-med life. I still find it super weird people elsewhere call the class 'O-Chem' because I've been conditioned to 'Orgo'

In that case, wouldn't it be "orga"? I had only heard o-chem until I came to this site.

haha yeah orgo is definitely a chicago thing. Here though people call it ochem and that's what I've gotten used to it. Ochem is definitely a soph year class for us. Junior is physics usually and biochem

WashU says orgo as well. Midwest thing perhaps?

or you can lovingly call it orgy.. no? no..

lol

People at my school call it orgo and when they do, I frown upon them and say it o-chem.

# professors have agreed to write me a paper and send them to my pre-med committee.. so I'm done worrying about the letters.. my 3100 character PS will stay as it is because that's all I can do and I've given up.. so as far the application cycle is concerned, I'M READY FOR IT!!!!

2 finals left - 2 A's already received.

👍
We call it ochem/organic here, too... what is "orgo?" 😕

They're not only some of the toughest classes, ochem-1-2, (due to their professors) but also are some of the bottlenecks in the pre-med route. There's opened 15-20 something sections, but the demand is kinda huge! You'd feel really lucky if you've found a seat, especially if you're a post-bacc(alaureate) student. Thank God, I'm clear off of them, and quite content. 😎

To the MCAT !.. (or, was it MCATS 😕... nah.. 😎)

The same here.
Done with the PS + reference letters.
Waiting...

I really wanna push my MCAT back

Do it do it do it do it do it. I feel like 5 finals + MCAT = not your highest possible MCAT score. I really don't think the June date will put you at a disadvantage, especially at schools that don't screen for secondaries. I pushed mine from May to June and am very happy that I did.

Talk through it. When I wanted to push mine back, it helped to list the pro's and con's. If you list them, I'm sure we would all love to help in any way we can!

my problem is I haven't studied in about ~3wks due to school winding plus finals, and I'm signed up for the may 26th date....I really want to review but there is no time...

edit: problem is I'm doing research at Hopkins neurosurgery this summer starting June until August

yeah it might be advantageous to push it back. Unfortunately, June 16th seems to be out almost EVERYWHERE. Unless you want to go to Guam 🙂

I might just take it, I'm pretty confident in myself at this point (maybe I shouldnt be?) BS and VR don't worry me and I've been grinding out PS like crazy the past 2months......I just feel "out of the loop" MCAT studying wise and it's a weird feeling....I'll take another AAMC right after finals and see how I do I guess

Felt the same way this semester, but I can't imagine doing finals and studying for that beast. Hopefully you'll regain that MCAT mode once you regularly take practice exams again!

Love it. I'll have to try and convince the younger kids at my school to start using the new term.

Wish I was in your boat for the application process...I'm freaking that I still haven't gotten all my LORs and I'm not even close to solidifying my PS draft.

God damn, I have missed a lot. Guess the party started without me 🙁

First, taco bell is love! so is chipotle. I have started enjoying del taco's quesadillas, but also because they have french fries (all time favorite food; I call myself a french fry connoisseur).

I have always wanted to visit Chicago; I hope to go just with an excuse for an interview 🙂

MCAT in 3 weeks. I'm debating on pushing, but if I do, it'll only tell me I can keep pushing it.

Apps....letters in. gotta write my PS. resume ready and I know what I wanna list as my activities. I need to get my transcripts in order.

I see a lot of you are gearing up for finals or finishing finals--GOOD LUCK GUYS! finish with a bang, and I hope we all go in with a positive outlook.

As for the ochem/orgo debate, I for one have always said ochem. I remember there being an SDN discussion a while back where there was a regional debate on ochem and orgo. I think west coast prefers ochem and east coast prefers orgo? Also, I talked to my pre health adviser, and though never to be used again, ochem is a weeder course. go figure.

Lastly, yay for foodies! I hope to grab a bite with all of y'all once the interview season starts 🙂

Me too.

Went to an east coast school --> Orgo

Twins! Sadly. 🙁

Where have you been?

I need to get my transcripts in order.

+1

This.

Agreed! 🙂

On a food related note:

Mmmm....home-made chili......Om nom nom.

That is all.

Busy studying MCAT Bio (not really needed more like passage overview so I don't get tricked by sneaky MCAT questions) so no epic quotes, just commenting on what I've missed

Got lots to do AMCAS wise, transcript requests (from 4 schools :scared: ), PS writing (haven't even started) LOR requesting (trying to find a second science prof that knows me 🙁 ) and of course MCAT prep (7 weeks and counting)

Agree with the O-chem = west coast thing which also makes it the definitive version of the term since we set the trends for everything obviously. 😎

Also a requisite foody here, hoping to join you guys for a bite (and a beer, got to satisfy the beery? in me too) on the interview trail. 🙂

Omg, done with "orgy" FOREVER. Sure, the final probably wrecked my A but I don't even care. :soexcited: Now to avoid a similar disaster with physics tomorrow. :luck: to everyone else!

good luck I got endocrinology and shakespeare tomorrow and advanced anatomy fri.

Congratulations!.. It must be a big relief, isn't it?
Also, from your title, I assume you're a fellow Trojan?

Don't be me! Losing the A after 4 months of hard work is depressing. Stupid cumulative orgo finals...

!! Good luck! That's quite a combination of classes.. Is Shakespeare for fun? Or a GE/major requirement?

Congratulations!.. It must be a big relief, isn't it?
Also, from your title, I assume you're a fellow Trojan?

Yes. The Relief:Grade Panic ratio is like, 99:1... for now. I'm sure more panic will set in later. And yes, I'm a fellow Trojan! Fight on! Did you take o chem with Hogen-Esch? Ugh.

Don't be me! Losing the A after 4 months of hard work is depressing. Stupid cumulative orgo finals...

Tell me about it. If a B on the final will bring me down to a B+ in the class, why did I even bother getting high A's on all the midterms?!?! I could have done a standard deviation lower on everything and gotten almost the exact same grade! :bang:

High five. I'm in the same boat....conformation. :barf:.
 Thank god none of that crap showed up on mine. I'd be lost without my ball-and-stick models.... My puny female brain can only handle 2 dimensions.

I enjoy Shakespeare, easy class and my only non science class.....plus it kind of helps for VR...maybe?

Shakespeare was a hard upper division class at my school. I wanted to take it, but I wasn't going to get another B in an English class (Stupid British Lit... haha)

Anyone else getting transcripts taken care of tomorrow?

Have an exam tomorrow, so I won't be doing anything AMCAS related until Friday.

I hear you, must be infuriating. Damn professor had our final weighted to 1/3 of our overall grade. We'll see tomorrow if I held onto the A or not. 😱

Class breakdown: 3 exams and one final (worth two exams).

Went into final with A-, got 5% above average on final, ended with a final semester grade of....... B

Sorry, dude. That happened to me once and I was extremely pissed. Only time I tried to grade-grub, which didn't even work. 🙄

Good luck to everyone on finals!

This year, I didn't have any thanks to the grad degree 🙂 Was done April 21st! 😀

Okay please dont kill me....

I didn't have to take any finals either, but that's because I graduated in 2010 😀

Only 2 finals.. Chemistry Seminar and Inorganic Chemistry.. Chem seminar - A or B.. won't matter.. 1 credit class so w/e.. I only went to class twice (8AM)

Inorganic chemistry.. 89.3 average.. I dont have even a basic grasp of the material that's gonna be covered in the final so I'm hoping there isn't too much of the new stuff.. haha

As far as taking care of the transcripts.. I'll have to wait till 16th May when grades are due.

I just came back from grade-grubbing . I found multiple mistakes. Turns out highly accomplished organic chemists don't enjoy being corrected by an undergrad. Who knew? Although TAs probably graded it, so it's not as bad.
