Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
nuh-uh, you're competing with me! 😉

No fair, its like almost 3am in Cali and I'm borderline zombie status right now while you're at peak energy level. 😡

Anyways, what type of Japanese are you learning? Katakana, Hiragana, or Kanji? I think those are the 3 dialects if I'm not mistaken

those are 3 writing systems.
katakana - a syllabary, mainly for foreign loan woards. america is written in katakana (アメリ&#12459😉. 46 characters.

hiragana - another syllabary, equivalent to katakana, but for native japanese words. ひらがな looks softer than katakana. also 46 characters.

kanji - the chinese characters. the complicated stuff. 交通費 are all chinese characters. they say to read a newspaper you need to know 2000 or so, but i think japanese people probably know more like 4000.

most native japanese words are part-kanji, and part-hiragana. all the grammar stuff (prepositions, verb endings, conjugations) are hiragana.

i know all the hiragana and katakana, and i'm decent on the 2000 kanji (nowhere near able to read everything tho)

Talk to ya'll next week! I'm goin' on vacation!

ENJOY!

what kinda sushi? 😀

on another note, my schools premed office guarantees LORs will be sent by....
(drumroll)
....
SEPTEMBER 19th!

considering i have to email schools and ask them to try and schedule me interviews within a 2-week period of each other for when i fly back.... oh, and book an international flight and re-arrange my teaching schedule....

september 19th is really, really late.
hoping that they get started on mine marginally earlier. :xf:

capn I am in the same boat as you! I have to schedule all my interviews for October and I am really hoping my committee letter can be finished by late July. I am definitely going to have to beg them, though. grrrr.

I had the crappiest day today... Sympathies welcome 🙁

Details/Major multiquote to come tomorrow!

I'm sorry your day was lame! Mine was too, actually. Just sat around all day.

👍

Nigerian for me! 😀

Ghanaian is good, too.

Beninese is where it's at, y'all! Yam pilée and wagasi? Sooo good. I love that I can just walk outside and get awesome West African food. 😍

A post worthy of the top position. Congrats!! 😀

Are you saying mine wasn't?! Page 53. I'll always have that. Sigh.

I can count in Japanese! Courtesy of 10 years martial arts training. I know a few random words, too. Nothing elaborate...and I have no idea about characters. That is so beyond me haha.

I'm learning French right now and it is waaaaaaay easier than all that! Good luck!

EDIT: TOP...again. What now??!

Yeah, I'm also learning my local village language, Dendi, while I'm here. Which means I'm learning it in French. My French skills are good enough that it's generally okay, but every once and while I'm like "what the heck does that mean?" and I have to do double translations. Very interesting stuff haha.

Wow, y'all are too nocturnal for me!

Too lazy to multiquote 😳

Ethiopian food is DELICIOUS. I went to a place in Chicago last year, and mmmmmmmm. I haven't had any other kind of african food though, but I would love to try! This is quickly turning into a foodie thread 🙂

I took four years of french in high school. I can still understand a little if someone speaks it, but I've lost most of the ability to speak it myself. So sad...I think I'm gonna take it up again. I tried college Spanish, but all the French would just jumble in my head with the similar Spanish words. It was an epic fail haha

who is not a fan of being amcas verified but having to wait another 20 days for secondaries of some schools...(like the one im applying ED to)

this guy :hello:

Well it beats not having AMCAS verified and waiting for that elephant to move.

Also, what's really good in Ethiopian food? I looked at the wikipedia page, and the dip looks like... well, use your imagination. I'm sure it tastes better than it looks.

I wish we would have these SDN post-offs during the day 🙁

👍 Great movie!

"You know, I was on this plane once. And I'm sitting there and uh. . . the captain gets on, he does his whole, you know, we'll be cruisin' at 35,000 feet. But then he puts the mic down and forgets to turn it off. And so he turns to the co-pilot and he's like, "you know, all I could use right now is a ****in' blow job and a cup of coffee." So the stewardess ****in' goes bombin' up from the back of the plane to tell him that the microphone's still on. And this guy in the back of the plane is like, "Hey, hon, don't forget the coffee!"

👍

I heard it's really good.

You've never seen "Good Will Hunting"? That's a must see for you. Better get on that. 😉

Verified!

About 10 of the schools I applied to are showing up as ones that I've previously applied to. I don't remember marking "Yes" to that question. I should probably have this changed right? Hope it doesn't delay my application...

Edit: TOP!

Grats. And, yes, you really need to have that changed unfortunately.

Dinner was turkey and cheddar cheese on wheat. Simple, but tasty. It hit the spot. Hahaha.

Dinner at midnight, nice! Does sound tasty though.

MSAR lists earliest date for filing secondary applications of schools. And they are alllll different

I find that to be a good thing, as I have MANY secondaries to fill out. I'd like the order of which I do them to be predetermined for me 🙂.

Try all along Lawrence or Wilson. Tons of amazingly delicious African food down there.

Trust me, it is. Yeah looks can definitely be deceiving but when you've got that huge plate in front of you it smells so good. I like almost everything so I try and aim to share a sample platter.

But I does love me some lamb baaaaaaaa. 😍

Same here. All time fav is probably The Goodfellas, though.

Wow, that's crazy. That's my favorite movie all-time too. People always say I'm crazy to think that's a better movie than the Godfather, but it's no contest for me.

Shawshank Redemption is a close second though...

I'm always tossing back and forth between The Goodfellas and Shawshank... Crazy!

Trying to avoid gargantuan multi-quotes, so I'll break them up.

I gotta stop studying, seems like I always miss out on the fun. Might have to go epic multiquote soon. Can't have berries and bookfreak have all the fun.

Then join us...after your test. Hahaha.

And I will get back to the top again...

We'll see about that.

+1. BTW, congrats on the 33. I would love to transfer your PS score over to me right about now 😀.

Grats. And, yes, you really need to have that changed unfortunately.

I know. I sent an e-mail out as soon as I saw. I don't remember marking "Yes". It seems silly they have to ask when you're ID number is in their system.

I don't have a problem with that. 😀

I wish we would have these SDN post-offs during the day 🙁

We can!

You've never seen "Good Will Hunting"? That's a must see for you. Better get on that. 😉

Yeah, I've never seen it. 😳 Don't worry, I've added it to my summer to-do list. 🙂

Then let's do it 🙂 . Only problem is that we need berries- she is the catalyst for such SDN 2016 post-offs.

I would put Good Will Hunting at the top of that list 😉. Every decent academic has seen it 😀

True, but I think she has class. 🙁 Hopefully she's lurking and can offer her services.

Almost at 1,000 posts. Maybe I can get there before the end of next week! Woot.

How does one saddle up a mustang that's already at a full sprint? How does one get on a rollercoaster that's midway through a loop? This thread is an out-of-control beast, but it intrigues me.

I wish it was Friday. I have class today, which sucks. I'm just trying to get through next week, but it is really hard, lol.

I'd take class over work any day 😎 What class??

I joined this thread only about a month ago. The key is to just hop right in. You > mustang at full sprint

Statistics. That reminds me, I need to finish up my homework that's due today.

What do you do at your job?

Ah, I was a math major. Statistics was always a good class- especially biostats.

I'm in software, on the quality assurance side of things. Past few weeks the app has been in development, so I am bored often. Should be up and running soon, though.

Along with Good Will Hunting, I think my favorite older movies have to be The Shawshank Redemption and The Fugitive. I've seen each probably 100+ times. They. are. AMAZING.

Oh btw, all of you in the Chi should go get Jimmy Johns. $1 subs today 🙂 But make sure the store is participating!

Yeah, I like application over freaking proofs. I can't stand proofs with a passion.

More time to spend with us!

I dunno, when I finished undergrad, my friends would be pumped to get out of the undergrad bubble and start working. They are probably singing a different tune now.

Agreed. Gone are the days of being accountable to no one 🙁
I used to gamble away GPA points sleeping in, but now the choice has been taken out of my hands. Damn clocks and bosses and such.

Getting my little bro to join SDN! He's an aspiring clinical psychologist (PhD route).

Shawshank = awesome.

Jimmy Johns: the one in the loop is participating. The line went about a block long. Needless to say, I traversed it for Subway. 🙂

What kind of proofs? Are we talking geometry proofs, which I hate, or are we talking more advanced stuff- like Abstract Algebra? I loved Abstract.

And, yep, I guarantee they are singing a diff tune now 😀

. There are pros and cons, that's for sure. The working world is just such a different beast, though.

That's cool, you can give him some tips to avoid the ridiculous/annoying threads.

Haven't had Jimmy Johns, but Subway = yum

The stats class was dealing with (crazy) algebraic proofs. Dropped that class like it was hot. Geometric proofs was in high school, and boy, did I suck at them.

Steady pay is nice, but it's really hard to be enthusiastic about it when you don't feel your situation is permanent. For instance, it's hard to take things seriously when, if things go according to plan, I'll be out of here and in med school a little over a year from now. Just no ambition to climb that ladder, you know?

And you know how a watched pot never boils? Well, I just found out the converse is true - an unwatched beaker always boils over and drips into unreachable crevices.

Yeah, especially after being a broke college student for 4 years.

Ha. He's not as neurotic as me. He will probably be a casual user.

No Jimmy Johns, no Good Will Hunting...have you swam in a pool before? 😉

Stats class with proofs? I've never heard of such a thing. I took a Game Theory class once, which had proofs and is kind of close to stats, but not really.

We had jimmy johns all the time late night in St Louis. Don't think it exists on the east coast. like steak and shake. nom nom

Pay is nice. The non-permanent thing has actually been a non-issue for me. I like the job and like the company; I just have dreams that I must pursue. Climbing the ladder- I understand- but I feel as though I have no guarantee of getting in, so I keep my current career in total check.

You'd think their "freaky fast" service could get sammiches over there within the hour.

It wasn't proof-heavy, but there were some from what I can remember. *shudders*

I was turned off to Jimmy John's by the fact that every collegiate event that ever required cheap, easy catering served stale, half-***** attempts at subs from JJ. Subway ftw.
