Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Geez, sorry to hear that. Hear back from that other letter writer?

well so far I've got one strong non academic letter, one rote academic letter science, and one possible work letter (if i decide to go that route). The main science/academic letter was the one that denied me yesterday and the one that denied me today was supposed to be a backup (but not nearly as strong). I'm hoping to try to convince the prof that denied me yesterday to reconsider, but it'll have to wait til Monday. In the meantime, I'm beginning to stress out a bit because it won't matter if I get screened in to all the Cali schools if I can't complete that stage due to all these letter writers bailing or denying me.

this sucks big hairy donkey balls

I just bought a guitar! It was $50. Yay for impulse purchases!

SilentSolider, when did you start asking for LORs?

Morning SDN! Happy Sunday! 😀

I went to a strip club last night for the first time. It was hilarious.

Wow, I just read the LOR from my English professor and it's pretty awesome. She even included a pic of some graphic design I did on a project

I love strippers.

Female. Me and my roommate went with these really fun guys she met at the bar last weekend. I had a great time actually.

Strip clubs can be super entertaining for all. What's wrong with drinking, and girls taking their clothes off? I like strip clubs in Montreal tho... full contact.

I like your style.

+1

Oh, goodness. Those stains never come out in the wash.

You know what's worse? Showing up to the lab the next day with glitter on your face... you know the really fine one that seems to get stuck on everything.

PI goes... "You motorboating son of a bitch! You went to the strip club didn't you?"

Graphic design on a project? Easy LOR greatness!!!!!

Hahaha but that is wonderful. I wish I knew what my LORs said...

Not anything crazy fancy, I just designed some cover art for novels. I didn't expect her to send the letter to me, but it was nice to know what she said.

Recently went to continuing education meeting for volunteering, it was on racial disparities. Eventually the question came up on who wasn't of mixed European race. My hand shot up, it was the only one in a room of 60. I promptly pulled my hand down.

Presenter: "It can't be only one you guys!!"

Everyone turns around....

: )

Anyways, I talked to the one guy in the room next to me during that meeting and we came to the conclusion that since there were 58 women and 2 men, that women are more involved in social work. Across all my volunteering experiences there was definitely a gender gap in that there were definitely more women than men.

Time for a run.

Some of my LORs asked if I wanted to see my letter, and I said no no that's ok. 🙂

My PI made me proof-read the LOR before she'd submit it. I didn't feel right offering up any suggestions and just signed off on it after a cursory read-through, but I did note some charmingly awkward phrases such as "he is in the top 5% of all pupils I've ever had." Not that that isn't flattering, it's just so blunt.

Very true. Women do love social work...

I don't like how they say that stuff. Seriously... who the hell is stopping someone from saying that this person is in the top 5% of pupils... it's not objective. I'd hate to think that adcoms place weight on that type of measure.

I seriously wonder how much emphasis is place on LOR's. I suppose they're AT LEAST as fraught with BS as your typical personal statement, and I'm sure many advisors with lots of students use the same form letter for a lot of them. I know it's ideal to stand out and get that unique letter, but many other students have the same intentions, and it's semi-mandatory to get recommendations from committee members / advisors / pre-req instructors, who have the most to write and end up producing something fairly generic I imagine.

BAH, LOR's are BY FAR the worst part of this process for me. I'm uncomfortable being entirely at someone else's mercy as we brush up against deadlines, and I daresay some of my former profs procrastinate worse than I do.

omg I haven't heard from the vengaboys since the 90s!

it's zombie killin' time!
😎

ugh ****ty day, one of my prof won't write me a letter, was supposed to be my strong academic letter, totally bummed, still not verified, FML 🙁
That really sucks 🙁. I'm hoping that you get it resolved on Monday.

Got a U of Chicago/Prtizker Invite today. I am beyond surprised and stoked. 4 invites in 3 days.
👍 That's so awesome. I'm glad that it's going better than you were expecting this year.

Hey 2016, if medical school doesn't work out I found an alternative career that will satisfy your need to help people.

But I already do this pro bono. I wish it was a paid position so I could get a LOR from an employer or someone 🙂

I've definitely noticed the same thing. When I volunteered abroad I notice that the organization from my campus had 3 guys and 13 girls (if I can count correctly). What's more is that I was one of the only two engineering or science majors out of the group.

SilentSolider, when did you start asking for LORs?

Around April for some of them, after submission of my primary app for some others. Either way, its been a year since I've had classes with any of these people, and even more for others.

also some of them were on vacation and either didn't respond, or had those lame auto responses. So i waited a while and asked again, then all this ish started to happen. It sucks not being in school and having to do this

Werd. Also, I can't believe you scrolled up enough to answer my question. This thread moved so fast in the summer that I'm used to just responding to a bottom post or a picture.

I wonders y...........

I'd think that the same gender gap should apply to those who matriculate into med school, since it is in part social work, but it doesn't. On the other hand, veterinarian students are more than 75% women in the US, that will probably be how med school is in the future.

Gah so much cute I'm going to explode.

Wish me luck on Monday, I'm going to be doing a full on mass email, convincing, graveling to professors to write me letters of recommendation. Hopefully something comes out of it.

It's always slow on the weekends when BWSTW isn't at work spamming .

But yes, school is part of it too.

This is true, my current job is considered kind of social work kinda thing, and the vast majority of the therapists there are women. They've been trying to actively seek out male therapists but I dont know if they can hang dealing with kids the kick, spit, punch, slap, bite, scratch, piss, and poop on them. Sometimes, I don't know how I put up with it.

My school committee is very strict about the confidential letters. I would have been scared to look...
