That's another reason I wouldn't want to be a surgeon. I'd actually like to have a functioning family :meanie:

surgery is brutal but can be awesome in private practice. if you do a fellowship in breast or hand surgery or even laproscopic and go into solo private practice, you have total control of your schedules and how much money you want to make.

Haha, I'm game. I've had Crohn's since I was little, so GI stuff doesn't really bother me. Although I did see a really messy colonoscopy last week. That was pretty gross. 😛

It wasn't that intense a smell in my opinion. You can definitely distinctly smell it, but it isn't that tough to deal with. TBH, the messy colonoscopy smelled a lot worse than anything I saw in the OR haha.

I see. Maybe it's just the type of surgery. I can't recall.

You're right, but it's probably very difficult to do. Once you're in one of those fields, the money will start rolling in

DUDE I have crohn's too! when were you diagnosed? I've had soo many of those 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

and why would it be messy? they should have been prepped before..

yeah i have plastics in mind. i'm thinking general surgery and a fellowship in plastics or hand surgery or even both. if i don't get plastics then i'' settle for tits

Either of those would be really awesome 👍

what meds are you takin?

are you going to let the adcomms know?

I'm thinking i'd put that down as my hardest thing that i over came..

All it takes is business sense and medical school/residency don't teach you how to be a good business man in private practice..heck, they don't even want you to go into private practice in the first place, they all want to train academia physicians to teach and do research for less pay. i'm definitely not going into academics. i need to buy a porshe one day and academics won't allow me to do that 😀

I'd like one of those, too 😛 Just don't get married or have kids and it's yours!
I definitely was interested in business at some point, which is why I helped my parents open one and it's a lot of responsibility...Having a private practice would be a HUGE responsibility. Gotta make sure to open one with some close friends so you can cover every field 😛

Along with like half a mansion and 1000 sq acres of land...Just don't get married :meanie:

yeah private practice is definitely a huge responsibility especially solo practice that's why most people don't go into it. they rather work for the hospital for a given salary than go through the hassles of starting up a practice. in private practice, you are the BOSS which means you buy you're own insurance, you hire your own workers and you have to deal with insurance companies trying to cheat you at your own money. the hassle is too much but the reward in great

Sorry to hear about your sickness🙁

It's all good. It's been hard, but it's also been incredibly motivating in some respects!

No way! Sorry to hear you have it too. I was diagnosed when I was like, 9, so back in 1999 I guess. I've had a lot of colonscopies too. It's funny when I talk to patients complaining about them, they don't believe me when I say I can relate because I'm so much younger.

She didn't have any prep beforehand. I forgot what they were even doing it for, but I guess the attending thought it was urgent enough to go in with minimal prep.

I'm on the humira/methotrexate combo right now. It's working pretty well for the time being. I don't see how I can leave it out of my personal statement or some questions that seem to pop on on secondaries without leaving out a chunk of my story. On the one hand, I don't want them to think it will keep me from doing my job adequately, but on the other hand, it's been a big factor behind my decision to pursue medicine and what I've had to overcome along the way, ya know? How about you?

We'll just have to see what the future holds for us 🙂

Truth. Whenever I think about the idea of opening a private practice, I think about how much work it would be and I get nervous to do it. 😛

Gotta learn to love stress 😛
