I really only started squatting recently, but if I'm understanding Madcow correctly this routine won't really benefit you unless you're squatting 300ish pretty easily (which I'm not). I've been sticking to this for the past month:

I was doing 5x5 for a while but started to plateau, so I switched to this which has been great so far.

AND POST 30,000. #winning
 My dreams.... cruelly destroyed.....
I guess you'll have to stick around for the more monumental 50k 😀
I wouldn't have stolen that top had I known it was also the 30,000th post though, haha

Well that makes one of us.
Damn post editing is so confusing once someone else quotes you. You had post 30,000 Agent B. I just stole top.
You can certainly benefit from Madcow's without being able to squat 300. The school of thought, though, is that it's probably better to try and use programs that have you adding weight to your lifts more quickly when you're able. That being said, not everybody who squats less than 300 is capable of adding a bunch of weight to their lifts very quickly--I'm certainly not (though that's a product of years of lifting when I didn't know what I was doing and wasting my chance at newbie gains/adaptation).
If you've recently gotten into lifting that program has a whole bunch of things you don't need and not enough of what you do. 5 different back exercises and no deadlifts? You'll get a lot more bang for your buck doing heavy, big lifts more often than you will doing 90 reps of bicep curls. TBH I haven't done any direct arm work in months.
All that said, do whatever you enjoy and will keep you getting to the gym.
Personally I've switched over to 5/3/1 as it's pretty simple and flexible as far as missing gym days (coughinterviewtravelcough). I'm also focusing a little more on getting into good cardio/running shape for hiking season at the moment.
Thanks mcloaf... I guess the bolded is what I'm kind of confused about. So you think I'll get more bang for my buck lifting heavier for less reps more times a week? I guess I had always assumed lifting heavier required more rest time, whereas lifting lighter you could do more often.

I'm a newbie, just started lifting a few months ago. Care to share any secrets? (Also I'm a girl if that changes anything)
I just started looking into car insurance.. so scary complicated since I've never had a car before![]()
I'd start here: http://madcow.wackyhq.com/geocities/table_of_contents_thread.htm
This is the original website (albeit through some weird outside hosting site--his original website went down years ago and I don't think anybody knows what happened to the guy) of the guy who promoted Madcow's 5x5. Pretty much everything he wrote on that site is gold. You'll have to navigate it a bit as much of what he wrote is actually in the form of forum posts elsewhere, but it's worth it IMO. He draws a lot of his philosophy from Mark Rippetoe and Glenn Pendlay, who have plenty of their own materials out there.
I think things are a little more complicated than they make them seem sometimes depending on what your goals may be, but overall they do a great job at cutting through bull**** and speaking the truth about how to best get results in the weight room. Jim Wendler (the guy who created the program I'm using now) also has a lot in common with these folks, though he's coming more from a powerlifter point of view.
All this being said, I'm certainly not a fitness/lifting expert or a bodybuilder or powerlifter. It's just a hobby that I've worked at for a while and that I've always enjoyed reading about.
🙂
I need to start running again. I went out for a 5k last week and it was hard.

Actually, it was post 300001, I got ahead of myself. You had the 30,000th post Agent B.
Thanks! I'm trying to read up as much as I can on this stuff before school starts. Care to elaborate on the stretching/flexibility?
Awesome post, much appreciated 👍

Lol 5k is doable but still hard for me (I'm usually able to manage 3-4 miles). I need to be a little more consistent so I can get to 5+ miles. 🙁
On the bright side when I went backpacking I could tell it made a difference! 😀
Tequila Shots always a good plan
It may be 5:00 somewhere, but it's (probably) only 12:30 where you are in Michigan young man.
I approve

👍 I have to move mine to Sunday this week because I have to drive 6ish hours after work for a wedding and won't be back until then. For some reason I feel guilty when I move my schedule around like that.
lol.. I am working out this Sunday only because of the "holiday" weekend next weekend.. and how I know I'll be getting trashed Fri-Sun
Keg day.
I forgot about Cinco de Mayo... I gave up drinking until school starts. It really hasn't been very fun so far.
That awkward moment when you have to sneeze and hiccup at the same time. Eff you allergies.
