Look at the price of the mattress this way
The things you should be comfortable spending the most money on are things that separate you from the ground:
Mattress
Shoes
Tires

The mattress will be worth it for those few hours of sleep we get
Comfy shoes will help with the long hours in the coming years,
and If you own a car tires are one of the most important things you can own, especially if you live in the snowy regions.

All in all spend the money on a good mattress but look for deals

Ikea isn't a terrible idea.

Honestly I've bought all of my beds off of Craiglist... I've never spent more than $100 on a bed. That said I'm comfortable on just about anything and don't care about who/what was done on it before me.

Another upside of buying a cheap bed is that you don't have to move it when you move away... you can just sell it for the price you paid for it and live on an air mattress at the new place until you find a new bed. That's what I'm doing this summer... haha.

You can sublet my apartment in Williamsburg for the month of August, and then take over the lease if you want. It's only $2600/month :whistle:

Agree with Juan Solo here. Ikea is affordable, although the cheaper beds are pretty minimalist, so you have to be okay with a barebones structure and a no-frills mattress.
 
$6000 for a mattress is ridiculous. We spent $800 on ours new and it's a pretty nice one.

Have you guys owned an Ikea mattress? The reviews I'm reading are that they break down pretty quickly (within 2 years) and you'd do better to pay more for a mattress elsewhere.

Not a bad way to look at it. I plan on investing in a good mattress... I just don't want to have to take out loans for it !

Yeah I got mine for like $700 at an overstock store and this thing is awesome. I have trouble believing they get much nicer as the price increases so dramatically, but maybe you're paying for longevity and future comfort. I can't say as my mattress is only a couple years old.

I've had an Ikea bed for the past 4 years. The mattress is fine (I'm not picky), but the slats started to break down after two years. Nothing a little duct tape couldn't fix, but I guess if you're looking to settle in somewhere for a while, there's good reason to invest in something a little more sturdy if you can afford it.

Yeah exactly. Ours is a Simmons beauty rest queen. It's a few years old now and still seems just as good. I mean maybe one of those fancy intelligel beds or the sleep number beds might be more expensive for good reason, but other than that...

I am alone right now but my brother is meeting me tomorrow in Spain and I am staying with my best friend in Madrid.

The world is a crazy small place just walking on a street in Amsterdam I ran into someone I lived next to Freshman year and apparently my future roommate is also in Madrid now...waiting to run into incognitoguy.

well, you probably should've went to Barcelona if you didn't want to speak Spanish in Spain. That area is super touristy and I didn't have to speak much Spanish there compared to when I was in Madrid. Madrid is a much more fun city though. Sucks that you won't get to go to Southern Spain though, Sevilla and Grenada were some of the best cities I visited when I was there.

My problem with the menus was that rather than saying something was "pescado"(which I would recognize) they would name the different kinds of fish like "caballa" or "bacalao" and then I was totally lost. Meals were always kind of a fun surprise/adventure.

Yeah it's hard since we don't want to rent somewhere without seeing it first, so we're going through a friend who's a grad student already living in the area who is willing to go and take photos for us. It ends up taking like a week to go from finding a place to getting the photos and evaluate it, which is way too slow.

Late July. From talking with friends who went there for undergrad, most of the good housing starts to get booked for the next year starting almost a year ahead of time, which is nuts. I think we'll end up living somewhere not as convenient/nice for first year and moving for next year when we're actually in town and can find a nice place.

Yeah that's how it is at many big universities. I know at my undergrad finding an off campus house for the following year was impossible if you didn't start searching September the year before.

Do they offer special on-campus housing for medical students?
