You could always do what my college housemate did and buy a used king mattress at Salvation Army for $50.

Tots, which country are you in now? Still Belgium?
My phone battery is dying. The struggle is real.

Just the thought of that makes me itchy.
Edit: TOP!

Yeah I'm staying far away from craigslist for my mattress. But I never realized how much a mattress cost! My coworker was like "never get it at full price! we got a great deal on a $6500 mattress for $2100"... and all I can think about is how ridiculous $2100 sounds 😱.
Ikea isn't a terrible idea.Check out Ikea
HELLO EVERYONE!
Glad to be part of this wonderful group of awesome ass kickers.
It looks like I'm GW class of 2017!
Only Georgetown will possibly change my mind now!
How are you guys going about finding housing all the way across the country? I plan on moving in at the very last minute because of wait lists...but either way schools starts in early august!
WHOA. Everyone in my lab is getting presented with the NIH director's award for one of the studies we conducted!![]()
Guys... I've never bought a bed before. Where do I start?!
Check out Ikea
You can sublet my apartment in Williamsburg for the month of August, and then take over the lease if you want. It's only $2600/month![]()

Agree with Juan Solo here. Ikea is affordable, although the cheaper beds are pretty minimalist, so you have to be okay with a barebones structure and a no-frills mattress.
Look at the price of the mattress this way
The things you should be comfortable spending the most money on are things that separate you from the ground:
Mattress
Shoes
Tires
The mattress will be worth it for those few hours of sleep we get
Comfy shoes will help with the long hours in the coming years,
and If you own a car tires are one of the most important things you can own, especially if you live in the snowy regions.
All in all spend the money on a good mattress but look for deals
$6000 for a mattress is ridiculous. We spent $800 on ours new and it's a pretty nice one.
You currently live in Brooklyn?

Have you guys owned an Ikea mattress? The reviews I'm reading are that they break down pretty quickly (within 2 years) and you'd do better to pay more for a mattress elsewhere.
Yeah I got mine for like $700 at an overstock store and this thing is awesome. I have trouble believing they get much nicer as the price increases so dramatically, but maybe you're paying for longevity and future comfort. I can't say as my mattress is only a couple years old.
Oooh that apartment sounds nice! Sadly I don't think my loans will cover that kind of rent 🙂
I do, are you familiar with the area? I live in East Williamsburg, which at one point in time might have qualified as Bushwick 🙂
Yeah my SO lived on motor street, near the Graham ave L stop, bordering green point
No Way!! Graham Ave is my stop! Not sure how long ago your SO lived in the area, but she'd probably be surprised by how crowded it is on the L train these days 😎

about three years, until last March of 2012
Neat, your SO and I were neighbors for a bit then 🙂
Wow. That's SO awesome...
I am 😉
Yeah I get that a lot. The laddiez dig the giant glasses/kittehs
I must choose between two places now... Hmmm........ Chances are, I'll go for the cheaper place, but still....
Haha that was some very good deductive reasoning you did right there 😉
I'm leaning towards the cheaper option. It's a very nice place with great people (three third years).
Haha well then you will pretty much have the place to yourself since they will be in the hospital most of the time.
Exactly. It's a big room with a little side office. Fresh blue paint on the walls, free washer/dryer, the whole shebang.
Yeah tomorrow I head back to the UK and then from the UK go to Madrid, Spain.

I am jealous. The places I'm calling about are getting leased like the same day as the posting. Not cool.

I am alone right now but my brother is meeting me tomorrow in Spain and I am staying with my best friend in Madrid.Who are you there with again?

The world is a crazy small place just walking on a street in Amsterdam I ran into someone I lived next to Freshman year and apparently my future roommate is also in Madrid now...waiting to run into incognitoguy.
Vas a Madrid? Hablas espanol???
Yes. No. Ok a little. I took 6 years of Spanish but still am horrible. I won't even be trying to speak it(or understand anyone speaking it) but I can probably manage to read important things like beer menus. I mean really that is all that matters right.

Ridic. I've had the same experience. It helps if you use the padmapper.com hourly updates. In my case, it was a posting from upperclassmen on the Facebook group.
When do you plan to move to Mich?
Late July. From talking with friends who went there for undergrad, most of the good housing starts to get booked for the next year starting almost a year ahead of time, which is nuts. I think we'll end up living somewhere not as convenient/nice for first year and moving for next year when we're actually in town and can find a nice place.
Are you sure you didn't happen to stumble into one of those "coffee houses" in Amsterdam and imagine your friend from freshman year?![]()
