Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

I freaking 😍😍😍😍 Scrubs!

OMG ME TOO! It's all I've been doing instead of actually studying for the MCAT... this might be the third time in my life I've gone through the seasons of Scrubs? I think I watched the weird season with the med school once, but it just wasn't the same.

Yeah, makes me want to watch it again. The med school one was crap...no wonder they cancelled it after half a season :meanie:

Wow Thanks for the long explanation! You are amazing!

I don't have a lot of the menstrual cycle memorized since most of the time they tell you a lot in the passages but here are the details that I found important:

Follicular Phase
-LH/FSH
-Ends in Ovulation around day 14(?)

Luteal phase
- Estrogen/Progesterone
- Corpus Luteum develops in response

Thats all I know off the top of my head. I probably can recognize more. haha sorry that probably wasn't very helpful.

Haha, no problem man! Anything for a fellow '17er! One of my favorite ways to review content is by explaining it to peeps, so it definitely helped me out 😀 I also just really like hormones, lol 😎

As far as the menstrual cycle, I'll try to explain it but please correct me if I epically mess up at any point. I think it starts by GnRH being released by the hypothalamus-->FSH released by APituitary with a little LH released by APit, FSH stimulates replication of follicles in ovaries (primary... oocytes? maybe? I suck at this), one becomes dominant--> the mature follicle starts secreting estrogen--> estrogen does three things: negative feedback on hypothalamus so no more GnRH is secreted (only one follicle per cycle has the chance to be fertilized), it starts vascularization of the uterine wall (endometrium), and it stimulates secretion of LH--> leading to the LH surge on Day 14 which marks the end of the follicular phase. Then, my knowledge of the menstrual cycle pretty much completely stops, hahaha. >.< LH induces the mature follicle to separate into a (secondary...?) oocyte and the stump (corpus luteum), the oocyte goes into "ovulation" and can be fertilized. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone which makes the endometrium stay vascularized and not fail epically), but not much. If the oocyte is fertilized, it becomes a zygote, which secretes HCG (something-chorionic gonadotropin) which firmly maintains vascularization of uterine wall and placental development, and corpus luteum dies. The corpus luteum I think dies either way, fertilized or not. If the oocyte isn't fertilized, progesterone levels aren't high enough to maintain vascularization of the uterine wall, so menstruation occurs and the uterine wall is sloughed off. Then the cycle begins anew!

i did not even want to look at the med school episodes cuz i knew it was only going to hunt me later and might make the previous episodes seem crap to me.

Hahaha, actually speaking of menstrual cycle plus Scrubs 🙂eek🙂, I saw an episode today while I was procrastinating where a character named each of her follicles per cycle. Pretty scary stuff, lol. "This month it's Haley, last month it was Cassie..." :scared:

They're not THAT bad. You just have to watch them as a completely separate show from the original Scrubs. There are a couple of really decent characters, but the J.D. replacement was... weak.

haha! What happened to you not knowing the menstrual cycle!!!!!

I mean, it could have been worse. The episodes with JD and everyone were alright. After JD left, it was 👎thumbdown It was kinda stupid to continue the show after such a perfect season finale.

Hahaha... I had to look up two things on wikipedia to fill in that explanation 🙁🙁 But I just kind of brain diarrhea'd it out there, haha. Yay! Apparently I know it! I just forgot what FSH actually did, and the fertilization bit.

@tman: Nahhhh, I am slacking for realsies. My Kaplan instructor apparently taught me this way better than I thought/it may have helped to have been a nerd and Wikipedia'd that ish after coming home from that lesson.

Haha! Only 2 things? I would have been opposite: I would have known 2 things and had to look up everything else on Wikipedia. Now I feel like a slacker =/ haha.

My BR instructor taught me all that too and yet I still don't remember most of it.....

Is it sad that I have become so lazy this summer that every time I refresh my email I cringe hoping I have no new important emails I have to take care of.....

My Kaplan class finished today and I have to say I didn't learn very much from the class. My instructor wasn't that great imo.

No...because I do that too:laugh:

Nah dude, I do the same thing. I have the noxious habit of checking my emails all the time, reading the important ones, and then NOT responding to them for a long time. Wth?

It's weird, I have no problem talking to other people about stuff I've already learned, but I'm too lazy to sit down and properly study. I need to haul my butt over to the library tomorrow and study until the cows come home, haha. Maybe I'll be my health-conscious self and buy some chocolate cake to get me motivated in the morning :meanie:

I don't know, I'm actually glad I took the Kaplan class. My instructor was awesome: he went over time every single lesson (by like 45 minutes) because he wanted to go through everything thoroughly, and explained things very well. He gave me a general basis of knowledge upon which I'm building by reading some EK material, I actually didn't end up liking the Kaplan review notes much, they're a slow read and don't present the material in engaging ways. The EK books, though, are only good for when you have a basic understanding of the material at hand already, so I think Kaplan was great for giving me that. And they give you lots of FL's. I haven't really used their quizzes or topical tests, though... maybe I should do a few of those.

thats a bummer since the instructor can make or break it. =(

I am taking TBR class and have an AMAZING physics/gchem instructor. He wrote the physics/gchem/ochem BR books. He is freaking amazing. Worth every penny. The rest of my instructors are decent.

Wish I were in Cali so I could have taken a TBR course instead.
