This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've just learned about the magic of a crock pot (slow cooker), It's time to invest in one.

Weeeeeeeeeee no school this semester!

Just released my background check. Not gonna lie, I was nervous when I reviewed it. No charges found anywhere. Go me!

I learned that you can't have nice things w/o a garage 😡

I love my car. Will be living somewhere with a garage for sure.

Wow, is that your car? That sucks bro.

Yeah 🙁 It happened early last year so it's all fixed now, but it sucked big time. It was an old first generation Z4. I'm either going to sell it off and get a beater until I can afford a house or find a place with a garage next year.

Hopefully you go somewhere that has decent places to live nearby with garage parking. Tbh, even if I get into BU, the fact that there is probably nowhere to live nearby with a garage is almost a big enough deal for me not to matriculate there.

So I just did some number crunching after all of you mentioned working and saving up money...I only make 40 bucks a day after taking taxes and gas into account. If there was any question about whether or not I should keep working, I think I've answered it!

Eh, I only make ~$70 🙁

$36 an hour here.

But only 6 hours a week...

$0/hour here. Go family business -_-. Holy..worked 54 hours since Thursday 👎

Although I am getting paid a salary I am still try to finish ASAP so i can vacation till school starts.

I have been debating looking for some income in between current grad school and med school but I kinda want to travel instead. Also I have about 20K but aside for travelling and then fun money for med school.

A lab mate of mine calculated it out and we make $48/day 7 days/week (that's the base grad student salary in my lab)

How do you save $20k on that kind of salary?

$12.45/hr here.

$36 sounds nice.

I get a stunning $10.80/hr at my current job, even though I regularly transport $500k worth of drugs in a van.
The highest paying job I've ever had paid $17.50/hr, but I guess I can't ask too much when I only just got my first academic degree of any kind. 😉

From what I've seen of her posts, Melissa Thompson can not be right. Ever. :naughty:
correct me if I am wrong but Venom5's statement regarding the accuracy of Melissa Thompson was referring to her comment that PLOS one is a horrible or poor journal (I cant remember the exact descriptive word used)

I would therefore have to agree that MedPr's signature was faulty since PLOS one is in my humble opinion a good journal

Also bottom

Idk how accurate MT's post was, but I lol'd when Venom said she was right just because of the relationship they have on SDN.

Also, top.

Before grad school I worked for a drug company and still have some of that left (although not much)

Also in my lab when you get awards and scholarships your salary goes up. I have therefore only been on base salary for 6 months in all of grad school (although that will extend to between 10-12 months when I graduate)

clearly venom5 should edit this post to reflect PLOS ones impact factor

$36 sounds nice.

I make $20.61 as a TA per hour. Do that for 25 hours a week.

In the research lab, I get like $14.61 an hour. I work that 15 hours per week.

The best part is I only have to work 4 days a week because I do ten hour days. It sucks, but having a three day weekend every weekend is nice. I also walk to work, so $0 spent on gas is amazing!

Edit: I should add that minimum wage in Washington is like $9.25 so it isn't like I am making way above it.

I wish I TAed this year or semester I would have made an extra 3K

I think I had my first mini nightmare about going back to school.

I make 17.80$ for my full time job and 22.50$ for my small part time job. Not bad I must say but also not super amazing.

Look at all the High rollers in this thread. Me and my $11.00/hour are going home. You guys are too rich for me.

A little under $18/hr but the cost of living where I am is pretty high. Tried to save for school when I started my job and then just decided to have fun this year since the amount I could save was negligible anyway.

You know that whole thing about feeling bad after a workout? Scratch that because the day after feels much worse, holy hell.

I did this a few weeks back. I felt bad about it for a few days, but now I'm happy with my decision. Saved about $400.

If it's a school you can't see choosing over your other choices then I'd save the money. I had the same situation and ended up saving the $400. Like MedPR said, it stings for a couple of days then you'll be all right and $400 wealthier 😀

My biggest problem is probably that I don't have a clear top choice yet so I feel like I'm still searching. The schools that make the most sense logically (cost, location, resources, ranking) haven't felt "right" when I visited and interacted with the students. The schools that I've been drawn to in terms of people and atmosphere are at the opposite end of the spectrum for some of those factors. Yes yes first world problems I know. Anybody else struggling and really hoping second look visits/financial aid packages help with the decision making?

Well then sounds like you should go. I'm guessing at this point since you aren't content with what you have so far you would say that the $400 dollars is worth it.

That being said I'm not sure about "right" fit. How do you know when it is right? The students you were interacting with could have a having a bad day, an upcoming test, a variety of variables. I'm not sure what you're right is but I hope you find it and the school that is for you. Good luck with your decision 🙂
