I applied MSTP both years and was apparently too stupid to make it into any of the programs, which really, really sucks considering how badly I want to pursue that path and the immense amount of time I've invested in research.

If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, though. OHSU is veering away from considering internal applicants; so I'll have to rely on the hope that someone gets cold feet before they enter the graduate phase and a spot opens up. Otherwise, I'll just do an MPH during residency.

Yeah, MD PhD programs are really competitive. There are other ways to get a PhD though... there's a neurosurgery resident here who earned his PhD during his residency. So if you really want it, you can find a way to make it happen 👍

I'm pretty content with the idea of taking a gap year to do research though... haha.

Yeah, the tuition waiver and stipend make it worthwhile. Otherwise, like I said, I'd just stick with a 1 year MPH during my research year if I do NS.

Dude! I want some! I'm a fan of the 500,000 scoville unit variety, but Siracha definitely has an awesome flavor.

Lol... I really don't understand the logistics, but even the older attendings seemed pretty impressed. I'm assuming he took two research years instead of one and was just insanely productive.

Neurosurg is two years of research.... Are there still 6 year programs around (1yr research)?

I think a lot of them are 7 years with 1 year of research

Edit: I think the 6 year programs don't include the first year... so they still total 7 years of graduate medical training.

Edit again: Nevermind. I'm googling right now and I'm wrong. UCSF is six years with one of research, UC Davis is 7 years with one year of research.

I think if I wanted to I could fill up my car with just clothes and shoes alone 😳.

I don't have anything super big I plan on bringing with me, except maybe my bike. I do have a bunch of small appliances/kitchenware stuff that I don't want to rebuy but don't seem cost efficient to ship... like my Keurig.

They were good but not great. I am a sriracha fan and I was a little disappointed at first...then I ate half the bag! I want to try the chicken and waffles but I also don't want to buy the whole bag. I wish someone would just bring me 1 chip. 😛

At UCSF the stipend is 27 thousand dollars a year.... I just don't understand how it's worth it.

meh.. it might seem like a lot now... but 7-14 years from now it will be chicken scratch... you could be making more than that in a month.

Those three years are years you could be working at a physician’s salary.

Yeah, but remember folks, I'm already indebted $125k from undergrad. Add that to cost of attendance plus interest? Plus the fact that I heart research? It's a little different for me than the rest of you. But I do know that if I wanted to do private practice NS it'd be stupid to pursue the MSTP. But I really don't think that'd be my bag. Who knows, though, I could end up in pediatric oncology or something. I accept the fact that I'm still undecided when it comes down to the nitty gritty.

All of what you said doesn't address the issue of... it's all chicken scratch. If you go into primary care, there's loan repayment up the wazoo available if you don't mind rural/urban underserved. If you go for broke, you'll be making bank. If you make 500k a year, then 500k of debt is nothing. Work hard (and even with your 25% pay cut for your academics) you'll be fine.




But you're right.... your thing for young women is a real $$$$$$$ drain 😛

While I was looking up relocating today, I found out that transporting alcohol across state lines is a bit of a bother.

Guess that means I should finish all of my wine between now and matriculation. Starting on bottle #1 tonight. Cheers everyone ! :meanie:

I can understand that. I know debt is something that has been on my mind recently. Three years just feels like a long time. I still wonder how important research is to residency programs. I would like to go straight through med school, but I am totally undecided on a specialty; so I don't know whether that will be feasible.

Totally feel your pain. I want to enjoy my breaks and take time off, but none of the med students I've met on my interview trail seem to do that.

Oh, ok. Then I heard that using the summer to do reseach is not that helpful because you need more time to get published.

Oh I mean they continued their research into the school year, but they also worked summers. Another seemingly popular option was to go abroad and do international health? Anyhow it just looks like I'm not going to be able to go home and veg out like I normally do 😛 Maybe your guides/student interviewers are just a very self selective bunch though. I'll have to ask during second look or something.
