Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Can I help? :naughty:

I have plenty of wine to go around!

Oh, ok. Then I heard that using the summer to do reseach is not that helpful because you need more time to get published.

Isn't a summer generally enough time to publish in clinical research?

With the exception of Stanford med students, I got the impression that very few medical students take a 5th year for research. I am sure plenty of people match into those competitive specialties without a year off.

Actually, I met several students who took a year off for research, more than I expected to anyways. I think they were mostly interested in derm/ENT.

Yeah, I met a few people taking a year off at several schools. They were at the more research focused schools.

This seems pretty appealing to me. I don't think I'd want to do the full PhD, but a year out could be a nice middle ground, IMO.

New to this thread.

When do people typically get started with research then? I don't LOVE research, but want to get some done for interest and residency sake (hoping to get more involved than I was at Ugrad if you know what I'm sayin').

From what I hear, it seems like most students wait till the dust has settle during first year, and begin in the summer following year 1. Is that correct?

I definitely met these people but it certainly wasn't the norm, even for people matching in competitive specialties. I was just trying to point out that you I got the impression you can do pretty well in the match without an extra year off. And then there was Stanford, where something like 70% of their class takes at least a year off.

Edit: I guess it depends on the schools, looking back at my notes. At WashU I remember someone saying it was uncommon for people to take the 5th year but Yale I guess is similar to Stanford with a large part of the class doing a research year.

Thats what I've heard too. They start in the summer and continue it into MS2.

+pissed+

Yeah, but remember folks, I'm already indebted $125k from undergrad. Add that to cost of attendance plus interest? Plus the fact that I heart research? It's a little different for me than the rest of you. But I do know that if I wanted to do private practice NS it'd be stupid to pursue the MSTP. But I really don't think that'd be my bag. Who knows, though, I could end up in pediatric oncology or something. I accept the fact that I'm still undecided when it comes down to the nitty gritty.

👍

👍

Totally feel your pain. I want to enjoy my breaks and take time off, but none of the med students I've met on my interview trail seem to do that.

Also new avatar! 🙂

🙄

Yeah, but what else are you going to do that's a more significant resume builder?

Bring on the whine!

Pics from my deployment. This is the city in which I did my undergrad. These pics are of what is left of our local chapter building. :-(

Yea that's the way it seems.

Anyone here nervous/anxious about moving to a brand new city and start from scratch?

When I moved to my undregrad institution adapting to the new place and starting from 0 friends was a bit of a challenge. Didn't think about this so much when I applied to med school, but now it is starting to sink in and I'm feeling a little anxious about it! :scared:

I think it will be easier because you have 100+ people doing the exact same thing at the same time. Everyone will be looking for friends. Plus you already share a common interest with everyone one. I look forward to it, but I'm a bit of an extrovert.

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much. I am sure most people in your class will be in the same position. I'm excited!

Exactly what he said. The common interest thing makes it so much easier.

Excited no doubt... but also a little anxious!

I genuinely cannot wait for school to start. 😀

Totally went full potato yesterday. Gym at 7 class till 1130. Then played video games until 6...AM.

Son, I was starting an autopsy at 6 AM. Go hard or go home.

On another note, holy ****ing ****. Have any of you guys done the Need Access application? This thing is way worse than FAFSA.

You closing in on a decision? Are you taking second look super serious?

You closing in on a decision? Are you taking second look super serious?

I have schools I am leaning towards but I am not going to make any decisions until everything is on the table. I am trying to go to as many 2nd looks as I can for the schools I am seriously considering, is that taking it super serious? 😛 What about you? UCSF for sure?

Will I see you in Ann Arbor??

:naughty:

If not:

I'm officially getting old. I found my first gray hair. Damn, I was hoping to make it to 30 before that happened.

Same. My friend pointed out my first patch of white hair this week. It was a sad moment.

No lie... When I was in grad school I got my first gray hairs. I started to notice them shortly after our second med biochem exam. A couple months after graduation.... NOTHING! Now I have zero grays and I'm expecting them to Return this fall. Lol.

Hopefully I will lose it soon enough. I haven't really gotten stress grays. If I didn't get while in grad school and working a full time job, or while deployed to a combat zone, this job certainly shouldn't give it to me. It's so chill, lol. We even get some of the Korean holidays off.

I have a feeling this one is the real deal. I will be turning 30 in a couple months 😱

I kinda want to trade.. I am just loosing my hair (receding from the front and balding at the back)

On the upside I am tall enough that most people don't notice the bald patch

A few Jagerbombs too many tonight..

my wallet is gonna hurt more than my head tomorrow 👎

That's how I feel when I go out to drink. It is so much cheaper to mix drinks at the house and invite people over (assuming they bring drinks too).

You going to Virginia this month? 😉

I dislike kids today. So few of them have good qualities instilled. Such as, never show up ****ing empty handed.

Last night was an epic adventure... I think I got 2 hours of sleep....

As of right now I am only going to one second look weekend.
