I've done like 4 drafts and all of allude the whole medicine question. I go into too much detail on stuff, basically I'm writing secondaries. I just need to find a theme and stick to it. It only comes to me early in the morning or when I'm busy lol.

I am starting to do this as well and it's not going well...I feel like I am being too personal without actually connecting those stories/insights to my desire to be a doctor.

Ya the timing of inspiration continues to be a frustrating issue for me. Hint: don't write drunk and then edit sober haha 🙄

my first draft started off like this and was immediately eviscerated by my postbac director. I'm having a hard time not using a story to really get my point across before I dive into the meat of my statement. I totally thought it would be easier the second time around, but its not and I hate it.

Another 10 inches of snow today. I think I'm stuck in a never-ending winter.

Well they want me to get into the meat of why medicine and who i am as a person. I thought my story was a good way of depicting that other than a rote listing of reasons to why medicine. I just don't get this whole PS thing sometimes.

Haha I had a professor once who was from the south, and when he moved to WI, he was amazed how everyone has serious conversations about the weather on a daily basis.

yup, sounds like a friend of mine. Moved to Boston for school, and now all our conversations always end up on the topic of weather. Snow...whatever that is.
 
Man, I'm envious of all of you who have at least started your PS. My plan was to make significant progress on my first draft this week and so far don't even know where to start. I wonder if they would accept pictures/doodles... 🙄

I'm with you on this one. I know I'd feel so much better if I just started getting it all down but every time I think I have something great to write it comes out sounding like "I be good doctor some day." :smack:
 
I'm looking for some advice from others who have taken the MCAT before and can compare to their AAMC FLs...

So, i'm definitely not at the level that many of you are on here. I'm a first time MCAT taker and I recently took a stab at AAMC #3 and #4.

3/2/13 AAMC #3: 10/4/10, for a 24 (horrible, I know!)

This was my first exam and first experience with honestly timing myself. I hadn't been practicing verbal AT ALL for nearly 2 months. I was ill prepared for the pace of the exam, causing me to run out of time and not answering 5 questions (3 of which I would have gotten right) in PS and about 12-14 questions (2 passages) in VR. I hadn't finished optics either, so I missed a question in PS that I didn't have a fighting chance for. Content review is otherwise finished but I know of several weak areas (i.e., electrostatics)

3/5/13 AAMC #4: 10/9/10, for a 29 (5 point improvement)

Since FL#3, I have completed two EK VR exams to get back in the swing of things for verbal. My score came up by 5 points. While taking the exam, an unexpected event happened, which definitely affected answers on the last two passages. My last passage was mostly guess work, considering I was running out of time. Still, simply focussing on comprehensive speed reading and main idea comprehension had brought my VR score up to a more palpable level. I haven't reviewed the exam yet, so i'm not sure about PS and BS weaknesses on this one.

I'm aiming for 30-33 on the exam, but realistically, i'm ok with going as low as 29. My question is, especially for the re-takers who have experience preparing with the FLs, what should I be scoring from here on out to feel comfortable for the 3/23 exam? I don't get text anxiety, so I don't perceive that really being an issue come the real thing.

My problem is, 3/9 is the last day to change the date for the exam. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO, of course unless I have to. I certainly don't want to risk an avoidable low score if the overall consensus is to change dates.

Between now and Saturday (3/9). I will do another comprehensive review of all weak areas and complete 2-3 more EK VR exams. I'll take AAMC FL#5 Saturday morning as a gauge.

Before the real thing, I will have completed and reviewed all content, focussed on weak areas, finished 8-10 additional EK VR exams, and completed all the AAMC FLs.

So, should I be throwing in the white flag and changing the date, or is there hope for reaching the 29-33 goal by hardcore continual practice and review for the next 17 days?
 
Lol i got a 17 on #3, you're doing fine.

Today was actually sunny and not too cold, so I went skat[board]ing for a bit. Also got plenty of clinical experience today(saw a cardiac arrest brought back from the "dead") and talked to some med students, it was interesting and fun.

And I agree with your PS talk once again. I could write an amazing metaphorical creative essay about my passion for medicine and I still wouldn't answer that simple question. I feel its just too plain when it comes to it. I don't have any life changing experiences that would propel me towards the field, I just think its awesome.

I feel I have to use a story in mine... It really alludes to my answering the question prompted to us. I feel I weave it in ok, the problem is its way too long all together. The ending sentence , the punch line, of my PS is a conclusion to theme of my PS and I feel answers the question simply and honestly. I like it, but that's obviously not what matters lol. I'm getting it reviewed by some SDNers on the readers list this cycle. I look forward to their feedback and ill post what they have to say .

Yes serious maintenance last night. I didn't want to play outside I wanted to post in the c/o 2018 thread! Haha

Must be nice! My roommate and I are counting down the days until it gets above 40 so we can take the anti-drafting plastic off our doors and windows haha. At least I'll be in mid-80 degree weather in two and a half weeks 😎

Just start writing, it doesn't matter what you write just keep writing answering the question freely. It will give you insight on what to expand on, and what to take out. Once you get it going you'll have something to work with, even if its eliminating and starting over altogether. At least you get that out of the way. Check out the PS sticky threads from last years cycle.! Best of luck cybermaxx!

Just start writing, it doesn't matter what you write just keep writing answering the question freely. It will give you insight on what to expand on, and what to take out. Once you get it going you'll have something to work with, even if its eliminating and starting over altogether. At least you get that out of the way. Check out the PS sticky threads from last years cycle.! Best of luck cybermaxx!

I agree with you it's very difficult and confusing sometimes. I am going to have to just pare down my discussion of the event and find a way to intelligently transition and such hahaha its a pain.

Ha I am with you cybermax I have started drafting a few things but the actual writing begins this Friday after I finish this hellish week #undergradproblems

No no, keep at it as that's the only way we're gonna beat 2016. We use to go whole pages of conversations by ourselves. Totally not weird at all 😛

and yes, finals are coming around, my PS is slowly coming together, but that damn MCAT studying is going.... so.... slow. I think i should push my date back a week. But lol trying to do that in Cali
 
I think I know why I like studying for MCAT a lot less. Content review is a lot more fun than just answering questions and getting them wrong. :laugh: I pretty much only enjoy the times I review my notes...and those are few and far between.

Yes same here, i was going to apply last cycle and as a result took the exam last summer. I almost wanted to take it again after deciding to take a gap year because I knew I could do better a lot better. Yet my score was average and I figured that was ok. I, now thankful that I did, focused my attention elsewhere.

Work on your paper! Haha don't want your GPA affected on your apps! Unless your not submitting spring grades. Keep it up!
