Class Of 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We're told to count our stats course in the psych department as math, so I'm guessing that will be counted as BCPM 🙂 I'm putting down my more biology-y cog. neuro. classes as biology too, so here's to hoping for the best!

So I have physiological psych, and cognitive psych. You think I can put them both down for bio or maybe just one? This would totally boost my science gpa.

Micro classes were boring. 😴 Molec is where it's at!😍

I liked anatomy and genetics, that's it. Then again they were only bio classes I took besides intro.

Physiological psych should definitely count, not sure about cog.

Maybe just physiological psych? Our cognitive psychology course was much more psych-ish than it was biological. I feel like I made somewhat arbitrary decisions in deciding what was biology (ex: marked developmental cognitive neuroscience as bio but not developmental disorders) 😕

Hmm, wonder if my child development psych class could be considered bio. Focused heavily on biological development in the womb

or my health psych class..... hmm....

or my drugs & behavior class....

Darn. I need to look at my course description. It's been a long time since I took cog psych. 😳 If anything, I guess it won't hurt to mark as bio, and they can change it if they don't like it (you give an inch, I take a mile). Haha. I guess one class won't make that much of a difference. 😛

I didn't count my Cognitive Development course, which was the upper level seminar that followed Child Development. But maybe we should just take the chance and list it?

I'm gonna mark 4 psych classes under BCPM:

1. Stats
2. Bio psych
3. Health psych
4. Drugs & behavior

Hey, worst thing that can happen is that they change the category. 👍

Do you think they'd retaliate if we list too many non-BCPM as BCPM? (as in not count courses as biology that otherwise might have been considered because they start on a "roll" of not counting them?) Hahah, this process is making me completely neurotic :nono:

lol I was thinking the same thing, but I doubt it.

lol. no way. They have to be objective. I bet if anything, they'll just think you believed that those courses were bio. Not that you're trying to manipulate the system. :meanie:

Honestly, jeghaber, if you think you're pushing your luck, then don't list them. My course numbers that I'm listing as bio don't even start with the usual psy prefix, so maybe they'll think my claims are legitimate.

Even with the psyc prefix, psychology classes can be bio and all of my claims are legit.

Health psych was just like anatomy
Drugs & behavior was about mechanisms of actions of drugs so chemistry and biology
bio psych is self explanatory

I wonder if these people look at our schools' course descriptions to make a final decision?

Top!

ELP, where classical music and rock and roll converge. 😀

I hope they do

Does your school have course descriptions on the transcript you will send them? I didn't realize they could see the descriptions.

It's not on the transcript, I got those from the course catalog. If there is a dispute, I'll probably have to email AMCAS a copy of the catalog so they can see those descriptions

Our school switched to this weird system a few years ago and merged a few departments that included psych so the prefix isn't PSYC. That being said, I think I'd feel uncomfortable listing some of them as biology (no idea where to place Computational Cognitive Science, so I'm keeping it behavioral). I'll just pick the few that I think fit best to be biology 😛

The AMCAS tutorial for AP credit was fairly helpful, but I still had a question about entering grades. Since no letter grade was given for AP credit, should I just put a "P" down for grade?

Nvm, I just left it blank because AP credit won't be used to calculate GPA anyways.

Hopefully. I took stats through the psych department and biological psychology through psych department (it honestly was a pure biology class). With those counted in, I should jump to a 3.37.

3.37 looks much better than 3.28 so I hope that'll do.

I put my Psych stats under BCPM. I got lower than my average, but I thought it would be sorta shady not to put it in as BCPM. If they remove it, I'm fine with that.

As for my other psych classes, I listed Biopsych, Neural Basis of Behavior, and Neurodevelopmental Lab. Just the names should allow it .. right? xD

I didn't list Drugs & Behavior tho ... Even though I 4.0'ed it, I'm getting my "non-science" letter from my D&B prof so ....

I'm upset that neurodevelopment is going to be offered the semester after I graduate.....

edit: think I'm going to remove health psych just to try and be as impartial as possible. It could be considered somewhat biological but not nearly as much as the other two so I'll bite that bullet.

If AMCAS thinks the class is or isn't BCPM, they'll change it themselves. They'll have the transcript afterall. No shame in putting those classes in there, especially the ones that could go either way.

Very true. Might as well go for it.

In other news, I've got 2 more activities to describe followed by 3 most meaningful expansions and then I'll be completely done with primary (except transcripts and LORs [which I have one of already yay]).

Is anyone putting conferences attended? I've been to a few so I wanted to put them all together into one activity but when you select "Conferences Attended" it only allows you to enter 1 conference per activity.

At this point I'm only thinking about putting 2 conferences which were really good and that helped shaped my goals, but now I'm thinking I should just leave them out because I can't combine them.

Also, is there any downside to only having 2 most significant activities? I feel like all of my activities can be explained in 700 characters except for two of them (research and clinic volunteering/shadowing).

I don't think there's anything wrong with having 2 activities that are most meaningful. If I were to be completely honest, I would say that every activity I've done were meaningful in a way. Adding that most meaningful section was a bad idea, just added much more stress to the app if you ask me.

Hey, just checking in...lots of AMCAS chatter going on, I see. 😛

This is what I have yet to complete:

-3 most meaningful ECs essays (haven't started writing these yet)
-Personal statement (finished writing this a while back, but I just don't want to paste it in there yet 😳)

I hope y'all are enjoying your AMCAS adventure as much as I am! 🙄

I've started every part of my AMCAS, but getting through finals and trying to get a research paper out are first priorities. I did get my transcripts in the mail today so I guess I can finish that part this week as a break from studying and research.

bump

edit: looks like Bauman beat me to the bump

Good luck guys! :luck: Is your MCAT also next week lobo?

My retake is coming up in a month :scared:

who here has to be at work in like 7 hours but can't seem to go to sleep cause tv?

Just me? Okay

I just spent the past 2 hours trying to find information about fulfilling the California residency requirements for medical schools. The only thing I could find was information on tuition for undergrad students. I have no idea what med schools will ask for. :-/ I'm borderline for being an official resident, and really whichever state I choose will change which schools I apply to. I'm going to have to make some phone calls on Monday.

Hey peeps... As an estimate, how many schools total are y'all applying to? Would appreciate the help. Non-trad applicant here trying to make up my mind! Thanks!

12 right now.

Does anyone know for schools that require 2 semesters of college mathematics if that means I need calculus? I'm thinking just the basic college algebra and stats would cover that but I'm not certain.

It varies school to school. MSAR has it broken down into mathematics and calculus as separate categories.

Why subject yourself to the hyper-competitive California schools. If you have an alternative IS option, I'd go with that.

My list currently has 20, but I'm probably over doing it. :scared:

If they don't mention Calculus explicitly, then you should be good. 👍,

I was hoping to do like 20 with the aid of FAP. But I have no clue now 🙁

I guess I am the only one here that works weekends
