Thanks! Your reply is very helpful. I am actually on the semester system but grades won't get posted on our transcripts until first week of June. I plan to submit 2nd week of June and was afraid that my transcript would be late and I won't get verified early. I have finished all of my science pre-reqs and only took one science class this spring semester. This is why I did not see a point in waiting for my spring grades because most of my classes were pass/fail anyways and taken out of interest. Including, the grades would make absolutely no difference on my GPA. I was planning to submit early without spring grades and not updating schools unless they ask. But you are right, this would make me look negligent or that I am trying to hide that I may have done bad my last semester 😛. I guess I will just wait for spring grades and rush mail it, hoping for the best. Thanks!
No problem. Yea my quarter system school doesn't release spring graded transcripts until mid-June (I think the earliest is like June 18) which I was super disappoined about. But, it is what it is.

Did you decide to try the MD/PhD thing? I can't remember

No, I didn't. I realized that I wasn't competitive enough and that I can always do a post-doc type fellowship after residency or graduating if I decide that's what I want to do. I chose schools that were research-heavy and had options for a 5th year if I decide that I'm interested in that.

Nice, me too. You can also apply for MD/PhD while you're in med school so I've been told. I might have to ask @plumazul to confirm.

Yeah, there are definitely a few schools that allow for internal transfer to MD/PhD. Albany and brown are the first that come to mind. I've got them on my list too!

A friend of mine at Baylor transferred to MD/PhD shortly after first year – I don't know of any other programs off the top of my head. Good luck with your school list @sunflower18!

I haven't seen @AgentB in a long time... I think the account was deleted but not sure...
The name changed to some weird number thing, six digits.

How good does one have to be to be competitive for an MD/PhD program? Also, I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your PS now 🙂 I would have no idea how to begin writing mine.

As far as I know, great grades, high MCAT score (36+), and tons of undergraduate research experience. Pubs can help

Baylor is on my list too!! Good to know that it allows for that 🙂 thank you so much! Is yours set?

Yeah, what No Limits said. My MCAT score was too low, and my research isn't biomedical so that probably would have looked odd.

Thanks!! When are you applying? Writing the PS is hard but it's nice to get everything on paper.

Awesome! I'll be another desperate West Coast applicant, begging to get into Baylor. That low OOS tuition looks pretty sweet (though I'd still be going into debt).

Almost set in stone! Fortunately I received a scholarship, which will make my app cycle far less bank-breaking. I may just go ahead and shoot for 30 schools now that I have the cash... I only want to do this thing once. Secondaries are going to be a beast. I finished two already, but they've been a bit of a struggle.

30 secondaries sounds torturous. What's your list look like?

When you tag someone in the subsequent post after a top to buffer the top out.

I have no idea what it's for, ask @AgentB that, but it is what we do
What's a buffer?
The buffer is used to secure your "topness" in the event that some dastardly donor goes back and deletes a previous post. In that case, the buffer post becomes a top post, and you remain victorious.

The tagging thing was just Agent B being herself.

12 reach, 10 match(ish), 8 lower-tier. California residency sucks, seeing as there is no "safety" state school to fall back on.

If you guys see any glaring mistakes in my list, please let me know... and I will give you all my sdn love. I know sdn love doesn't mean much, but it's the best I can do.

Reach: UCSF, UCLA, Stanford, UMich, Columbia, Yale, Cornell, Mt Sinai, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, UChi Pritzker, JHop
Match (none are true matches but w/e): UCSD, UCI, UCD, USC, Case, Dartmouth, NYU, Pitt, Baylor, UVA
Lower-tier: UA Phoenix, UA Tucson, UCF, UVT, VCU, Einstein, Tufts, OHSU (low OOS I know, but I love Portland)

Hope everyone's summer has been going well! You quarter system folks are also nearing the end!

If your ECs are solid and your numbers on MDapps are correct, you could probably forget the "Lower-tier" list. Some on that list (e.g. Einstein) will probably reject you. Interviewing in NY/New England from Cal will be brutal. You might have to make some tough decisions. I'm so happy to be on the other side of this process. Good luck. :luck::turtle:

Does this only apply to the full-size and not the sdn app? Lol

With that MCAT score, I'd substitute one of the lower tiers for UPenn.

How much reach schools is too much? I have a feeling I'm over doing it lol.

I have so many reaches. I'm applying to 23 schools, and I think only 5 can be considered "midtiered." I'm thinking go big or go home. OTOH, NJ schools really favor instaters, so I think I have a good shot at a state school.

Thanks a bunch for your input – congrats on your (very) successful cycle! I grew up in Canada/UK, so I'm no stranger to the cold... though it'd be very, very hard to turn down UCSD.

I'm just a tad worried, because I'm coming from a low-tier state school that has never sent anyone to a top 10 school or any ORMs to a top 20. I know a UG prestige bias exists in admissions, though I'm not certain to what extent it will come to affect me. I guess I'll find out this cycle.

With that MCAT score, I'd substitute one of the lower tiers for UPenn.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'll definitely start re-researching.

You ought to be a shoo-in for the Jersey schools. Not super familiar with this game, but your stats and EC's look phenomenal. I think you're bound for an excellent cycle.

EDIT: Ditto to the "go big or go home" mentality. In case of a reapp, I highly doubt I could drastically improve my application within a year. By the time I could make any significant changes, the 2015 MCAT would likely be required... and I would like to avoid that test at all costs.

That is a great point.

Yeah, I feel the same way as you guys. That's why my list is sooooo long, even though I have no shot at ~10 of my schools. I feel like it's worth a shot! Some of you guys with your absolutely amazing stats and ECs make me feel so inferior, hahaha, but I'm really happy for you all that you will have so many options to choose from 🙂

Lol, it's okay Sunflower. Me and you will be the underdogs in our thread even though we both have above average stats lol. My school list is a total joke. It's like all my state schools and everything else is like a dream school with maybe like 5 realistic schools outside my state  Doesn't hurt to dream big right?

Ah, see, I only have one state school. So that's a bummer 🙁 I just counted -- I have 7 "safeties" (average MCAT <32), 14 "matches" (average MCAT 32-34), and 9 "reaches" (average MCAT >34). UGH it's so frustrating to be so on the edge. I feel like I've worked soooo hard and now I might not have quite have what it takes. Oh well. If this cycle doesn't turn out so hot, maybe the new MCAT won't be so bad..... I do have a lot of biochem and psych experience! So that's good anyway! Hooray for backup plans!

edit: my counting was way off.... i meant 14, not 21 haha

You're applying to 37 schools?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

EDIT: as I quoted your post it updated your edit =P

hahaha yeah it was a mistake.... 7+14=21 so that's where that came from. 37 schools would be WAY TOO MANY

First off, lol @ 37 schools thing, I caught that before you changed it too. Having one state school sucks, I'm sorry 🙁 But, I do think think you have a well rounded app with great stats. I still feel like you will do great this app cycle. Remember I said this first. Later this year, I will repost this to you, followed by "I told you so."😛

Wouldn't that be nice!!! I hope you're right. I'm sure that you are going to do great as well. I'm constantly impressed by everyone that I see here!

Top snipe

Yay for procrastinating!

EDIT: Too bad I can't count!

Website goes by 50 a page; phone app does 20 a page. This is why I always miss it UNTIL NOW I GOT IT AND MISSED MY BUFFER. AGAIN.

NJ is not very OOS-friendly. Hardly anyone not in Jersey ever goes, and I don't see why they would, anyway. (New Yorker Jersey hate 4eva)
