Guys, at every interview I've been to, students have said "med school reminds me of high school more than it does of college". Does that really mean what I think it means? High school social dynamics were pretty awful for me, but college was much better. I would have thought people would have matured in college . . .
Pure speculation: smaller class size? more close knit?

I would guess this has a big part of it. I would also guess that the inability to choose a lot of your classes has some contribution.

Seeming as we are all discussing the FAFSA, I'll ask my questions.

1) For the school code, I was told to use the code for the undergrad program. Is this correct? I wasn't sure because the tuition is obviously dramatically different between the two.

2) How much financial aid/grants do most schools actually give? I go to a school that provides 100% of demonstrated need, and am not used to trying to estimate how much aid I will receive (I am not expecting much just because it is medical school and it seems like that is what normally happens).

I don't know the answer to 2, but for question number 1: some schools ask you to use the undergrad program, some do not. I have found all of the FAFSA codes just by looking at the school's financial aid website

In other threads, med students and residents have discussed the immature behavior that occurs during clinical rotations.

1) Every school is different. Some are all under one code, others are split between campuses or UG vs MD.

2) Seems to vary greatly, Rochester's site says their scholarship/student averages $21,393.

On a side note, the sticker price doesn't count for much. For example: Duke's "COA" is very similar to Case's. But Duke's average debt is over 50k less than Case. I've been using average debt to compare the general cost of schools, but obviously there's a lot of flaws to my system.

I was positive that the schools still silent had tacitly rejected me--and then got two invitations from two highly ranked schools--one yesterday and one today.
Hey all! I just wanted to pop in and announce that I am officially part of this class! Accepted yesterday. 🙂
Huge congrats to you both!🙂

Congratulations!!!

I love it down here in Miami! Except the traffic, that blows. Oh, and UM is awesome too. Best quotes I heard from all the med students: "It's so easy to do research and yeah I do it, but I hate it lol." "I chose UM because of how nice and happy and normal all the students were. I felt like these were people I could actually spend time with." Also the M1s have their own little cruise during MLK weekend + there's always post-exam celebrations Miami-style? Sounds like heaven to me! And multiple stories of frequent early clinical exposure. I'm sold; I want to go here so badddd now.

@Ace Khalifa, you rascal! Where I am in the tundra, it's -6 with the wind chill. . .and that is one strong wind, too. Now you are making me envious--and regretful that I didn't apply SOMEwhere where I could get my vitamin D from sunshine! Good luck to you at Miami--I'm rooting for you!

I had the same impression after my interview at Miami! Wonder why it's considered a "mid-tier" med school? It seems really amazing.

Hahaha you should have applied! My interview today wasn't the greatest but still alright. I'm hoping I can get in, or at least be high on the alternate list. And I am not looking forward to going back to cold cold STL lol.

@Ace Khalifa , how were the interviews? Relaxed or..?

Rankings aren't everything
My one interview was pretty relaxed and conversational. It wasn't my best interview (SLU was still my best) but it wasn't bad, more like slightly above average. All 9 of us today were just MD, no MD/MPH. The whole day was low stress lol. Be prepared for information overload lol.

@Ace Khalifa I'm glad you enjoyed it down there! Schools in major cities are amazing haha, mainly due to the nightlife post-exams. Miami is killer!!

I know you all did this a couple months ago, but I wanted to wait until I had an acceptance. Silly, I know. Anyway, here are my results from the Specialty Selector.

Back at school, middle of reading period, haven't taken my finals, still up at 7:30 to volunteer at clinic.
THIS SCHOOL LIFE STARTED TOO REAL

@ridethecliche LOL good luck wearing that to UM second look (hoping you get accepted there!)

I'm actually thinking of wearing a pocket square to my Miami interview...

That said, that picture was kind of tongue in cheek, but that's pretty much how i dress most days. On the weekends, it's sometimes jeans, but if it's cool enough to wear a sportcoat, I usually do.

Also, there's absolutely no way I'm going to any second looks...

This is also kind of funny because you asked if you should wear a suit lol.

Yeah and after seeing how wearing a suit in Miami in January felt, I would definitely not do it again in March/April lololol

I hope this is the right thread for this question. 🙂 For people who have attended interviews after having been accepted at a school, how do you respond to "what would you do if you didn't get in this year"? Is it appropriate/better to mention that you've been accepted, or not? Thanks!!

YMMV, but I was never once asked this question at any of my interviews. Had I been asked, I likely would have answered as if I hadn't gotten in, since that's what they are really curious about. I would say a more refined version of, "I would work on strengthening my application by doing xyz, and I would reapply in June. I'd likely spend my gap year doing abc."

I really think the only reason why that question is sometimes asked is to assess how thoughtful you are as an applicant. It's a good question to determine how mature an applicant is. Just pretend you haven't been accepted if you do hear that question.

Thanks for the responses! That's basically what I said when I was asked. I was just wondering if it would make me seem more competitive if I have been accepted somewhere.

I think if you've been invited for interviews, that means the schools are already interested enough to want to learn more about you!

Don't worry too much about trying to "seem" competitive. You are competitive enough I'm sure!

I am currently walking off the agony-lol. It's actually pleasant tonight in Gotham City.

I think I'll play GTA San Andreas when I get home. That's always a mood booster 😀

Keep it up! You're awesome!!! All your hard work will pay off when you're in California for real, not just within GTA 😀
