This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No one can match @researchismymiddlename when it comes to sheer exuberance and powerful encouragement, but as a distinctly junior varsity type cheerleader, I would like to add my "Rah Rah Go Team" to @sunflower18 ! Congratulations, awesome lady! Here's the puzzler--dungeon Case or sunny UCLA. . .how will you decide? Whatever the decision, it is delicious that you get to make it. Good for you. As for the too-long-gone @researchismymiddlename, welcome back. You are such a star and inspiration. Nice to be sharing the firmament with you. . .

Thank you!!!!! 🙂 I really appreciate that!!! Congratulations to you as well on all your IIs as of late! So impressive!!!

Hey guys, I need your advice on something...

So in September, I wrote Mayo a letter of intent. I've been on hold since October. They are likely doing another final round of acceptances, waitlists, and rejections in a week or two. If I get in, I feel that i would be committed to attend since I wrote the letter of intent.

My concern is that I preferred CCLCM over Mayo, and I'm not sure if I liked Mayo or UCLA better. So if I get into Mayo next week, I'd be giving up the chance to get into CCLCM and to attend UCLA.

I could withdraw from Mayo now so I don't have to worry about going back on my word.... But I can't decide if I'd rather go to UCLA or Mayo.

Help!!!! Sorry if this was super confusing. And I know that nobody can tell me what I want more, but what would you guys do in this situation?

Moral of the story: don't write letters of intent in the first month of the interview season hahaha

A letter of intent before you've been accepted is not binding, especially if you hadn't interviewed at/heard back from other schools yet. It's completely fine to "go back on your word." Don't worry about it.

They probably didn't take your letter of intent seriously when you wrote it so early and without acceptances. Don't worry about it, choose the school you want to attend the most.

Agreed with everyone above. Especially taking into account how early it was in the cycle, I don't think it's that seriously taken and certainly not binding in any way. I think you should wait to see all of your options before doing anything right now. Your perception of the schools has obviously changes and you ought to choose the one right for you, with no obligations to accept one or the other.

Thanks @cactus8910, @Ace Khalifa, and @spockprime. I guess I just would feel really bad about withdrawing an acceptance there.... But you're right, it was so early on that it's probably not binding. If they had accepted me in October, I surely would have withdrawn everywhere, but a lot can (and did!) change in four months. I appreciate your input!!

HMMMMM question:

do I complete the Need Access form for schools that I'm still waiting to hear back?

I am not the wisest advisor, but I consulted Yoda. He said, "You will know the good from the bad when you are calm, at peace, passive." He added, "Already know you that which you need." You have, somewhere deep down, already decided whether you prefer Mayo to UCLA. (For the moment, we are leaving CCLCM out of this decision.) There is, somewhere, an "oughta" that is making it difficult to follow your heart. Identify that "oughta" and get it out of the way, and you will see clearly what "already know you."

You will feel guilty if you get into Mayo and then change your mind, and that is understandable, because you are a Jedi of honor. On the other hand, Mayo will not suffer heartbreak or despair of filling all the seats in the in-coming class. What you might give up would be gleefully and gratefully claimed by someone else--as you know.

What would I do? I guess I would do all the rational, spreadsheet analysis and then sit in silence and listen attentively to what my heart was telling me. See yourself at UCLA--really visualize. See yourself at Mayo. Spend some time looking at the pictures that come and deciding in which you seem happier.

Fortunately, the Dark Side does not seem to be at play here--it's just how you wield that lightsaber. . .

(Sorry for the non-guidance. . .kinda sorry, anyway!)

@sunflower18 concur with the others. Your letter is non binding. I'd wait to see how much aid etc they offered you before making a final decision.

That said, why anyone would pass up UCLA to move to the midwest is beyond me.

EDIT: Actually, I don't know. I'd like to spend my life not stuck in traffic. UCSD otoh...
The weather more than makes up for the traffic in HelLA though I suppose.

I don't remember saying any of that 😛

That being said, I completely agree. For a lot of people I talked to, when they had a "I was set on A but now I'm considering B" they had already made their decision. They were either distracted by shiny B momentarily and are able to dismiss it with careful thought or ended up gravitation more and more to B. Gut feeling is a big part of this; I've found that your gut is better than your brain at judging the gestalt of things.

Think of it as being in a relationship. If you're in a relationship and fall for someone else, you most likely already know if you're in big trouble and have some serious conversations ahead of you or if you can just wait it out.

@sunflower18 Good luck figuring things out and know that you are in a wonderful dilemma that you've earned through hard work 🙂

Y'all are awesome. This advice is super helpful, and has given me a lot to think about. I think that I'll just see where the chips fall, since I might get rejected from Mayo and this would be a non-issue! But if I get accepted, I'll consider it carefully and not feel obligated since I wrote them a letter several months ago.

Thanks so much you guys!!!! I know that I'm so fortunate to have multiple acceptances and pending decisions to wonderful schools -- I'm still not convinced that this isn't a dream.

When I woke up to my first acceptance 2 days ago, I slapped myself to make sure I wasn't just dreaming. I can confidently say that this is real life for both of us. I hope it all works out for you!

@sunflower18, you already know that I'm California Dreamer #1. However, Winterhold's small class makes it very enticing, even for me!

Better late than never! I only got accepted 2 days ago, but it's such a huge relief!

I just logged into SDN on my laptop for the first time in months and just noticed that "Medical Student (Accepted)" is widely used status option 😱 I remember when it first came out and people were hedging on whether to use it for some reason. Is there room on the bandwagon for me????

Hey, @MDporfavor8888, felicidades! It feels so good to be accepted--and good luck on that interview at the top choice!

I just realized that I'll never be forced to take the new MCAT!! Being accepted rocks!!
I sincerely hope that some of the 3rd party practice exams for the new MCAT will come close to the actual exam in terms of format/content and difficulty. I'm actually considering waiting until at least 3 AAMC practice exams are available, even if that means applying a year later.
Or maybe not...
I'll be very happy if I get at least a 512 (which is supposed to be the new 33). Lol, what do y'all think? Any feedback would be appreciated!!!

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT ungrateful for my 1 acceptance I have so far. I would happily go to EVMS if it ends up being my 1 and done. However, since the game isn't over yet, I'm still waiting patiently and sending updates and and hoping for more interviews and acceptances.

Gotta catch em all!

This is a really interesting read on population growth and social dynamics via mice experiments:

Welp... I don't know why but I feel like this is probably the most depressing thing I have ever read. I have read a lot of doom and gloom stuff but I feel like that article takes the cake...
Yeah, that's some pretty bleak stuff. Interesting though, just as advertised 🙂.

But what is up with that website ... did you read their about us page? Here's a sample:
Women and homosexuals are discouraged from commenting here.
:eyebrow:

Haha, yeah on further digging that site is kinda shiet, but the article was interesting nonetheless. I should probably dig into the source material to see what actually happened though the video they give is from the experiment.

On a more med school related tangent...

I'm going to send out my last round of updates this week. Given that in flying out on Thursday for Miami, this gives me two days to do like 20 letters. Holy crap...

I really hope I get an invite from Jefferson this round... I'd go to Philly over where I was accepted in a heartbeat.

Good luck! At Miami and for your updates! I would love to have a chance to visit Jefferson too.

This new scale is so weird... May the force be with you, @Cyberdyne 101.
Sad **** we're seeing in the U.S. when we start to change scoring scales in order to not make people feel bad about scoring single digits on exams...it's hard for me to believe that this wasn't a factor in deciding to change a scoring scale that was perfectly adequate for its purposes. Including standard error ranges is a plus, though.

I think there was a fear that the two sets of MCAT scores would be confused. So they use a whole new range. But I agree it is awful.

I feel that it will be more of a competency exam in the first year or so. Or maybe I'm wrong...

Regardless, it's quite alarming that they have such a limited amount of material at this point...

I need some advice.
I was small pooled today at a school that I have not sent any updates to (not for lack of interest in the school). I have an update letter ready that I sent to a few other schools with two large activity updates (One musical and one volunteer-related). Would it be too forward to send this update tomorrow? Right after being small pooled? I'm just worried because I know the end of interview season is approaching and if it's at all possible for me to receive an II here I'd like to do anything I can to help myself.

What do you guys think? I'd appreciate any input 🙂

I'd say go for it! They are an awesome admissions office and it can't hurt 🙂

Do you guys think this is worth an update letter by itself?

I was asked by my old prof to TA for him again as a volunteer this quarter, and i've been doing that for like 3 weeks now.

Don't really have any other new things to go along with it..

Quick questions to those that sent update letters with publications. Did you list out the title and all the authors or just the title and what author position you were?
