I had to stay away from sdn while I got my **** together the first week. Now, I am gold xD
Okay, now that that post is out of the way, I did want to comment on one earlier post. (no, not looking for it to quote lol)
Rule of thumb, for all classes, is to study/do homework/write papers for 3 hours for every 1 hour of lecture.
Don't get caught up in the thinking that it is easy now. You will get behind unless you put in some study, or at least some reading, time. Get in the habit of it so you learn time management. College is very social and you will not find the time while you're having fun meeting new and\or catching up with old friends.
It isn't that hard to do. Math you will spend that time doing homework, for writing classes you will spend that and more writing. For the learning material ones, just reading and understanding chapters in an accelerated college format will take up the required amount of time. Budget it into your schedule. You can't say gen bio is easy when you are covering 1+ chapters a week and have your first exam on six of them in three weeks.
College isn't easy and if you go in thinking that, you will do poorly. Things go faster. It isn't like high school where you cover one chapter in a month. Ha, I wish. I will be sitting down sometime tonight to budget in the required study hours for each of my classes, because I was behind my first semester and my grades reflected that. Then I was only taking 11 credits, now with 18 I know I need to keep my **** together.
~end rant~
Do something fun one a week though...or you'll burn out.
Okay, I really tried reading ten pasges of missed posts. I got to page three and had over seven posts I wanted to reply to....so I stopped reading.
My gen bio book is Raven editon 9. Graet book, weights lke 50lbs (and costs over $200) So I did the smart thing. I got the eBook and printed my current chapters to pdf (I can print up to 907 pages a month). Now I use my annotating app to highlight and make notes. I also printed the prof's powerpoints to pdf handouts so I can use the same app to take notes in class.
LOVE all of my professors this semester!! Absolutely love and cannot wait to go to each class. I am taking 18 credits, plus a pltl for bio. So in all I have Spanish 1, College Algebra, Writing & Rhetoric II, Approaching Literature, Gen Bio I, & the lab. It really sounds like a lot of classes, but I only have to study for two. The others are just doing homework, two of them being writing intensive.
My courses are all at night, but I have to go in early today to make up the first lab. Mine is technically on Monday, but I didn't get in until Tues night...thankfully someone dropped the lecture right as I was checking for openings (happy dance).

What is the annotating app called? Our library has a machine that scans book pages and converts them to a PDF if you plug in a flash drive, but I'm not sure how to use it yet. What is 'Approaching Literature"? I have:
-Honors Scholar Seminar
-Calculus 1
-Psychology 101
-PE course (2 required to graduate)
-Biology
-Introductory Chemistry (before 101)
-First year seminar (required)
-Online special topics class in Bio (critical thinking and scientific reasoning).
15 credits total (some of these are credit-less)
ohhh yayyy!!! 😍

I love hearing people say "hur dur dur, college is a piece of cake" as they proceed to play xbox 360 all night. I, on the other hand, am probably over-studying/reviewing for the first two weeks, but I'm determined to do well. Great post!
The only thing I disagree with, however, is the once a week fun thing. I think it's extremely important to have an outlet, whether that be going to the gym for 45 minutes 3x a week, or hanging out with friends. Especially since we are freshmen, we need to establish new friend circles that we're missing from high school. If you manage your time well enough, you should be able to squeeze in a workout or going out to eat with friends one night. Studying IS important, but you shouldn't be locked up in the library 24/7 and not talking to anyone IMO
Glad you joined in NCTW!!
aviendhae: glad everything is working out for you in regards to classes 🙂 Also: I totally agree with your college rant.
It's definitely important to enjoy your time at UG. Becoming a doctor is a marathon, and there is no reason why we can't have a little fun while we're at it! It should never become daunting and scary. (although it can seem that way)
iAnnotate PDF is the app and it works GREAT with dropbox http://db.tt/knE992t (link for signup....please use b/c we will both get free space xD). I use NotesPlus to take notes with my stylus, which I then upload to dropbox which converts it to pdf. I can then view and print my notes at home from my dropbox folder (auto sync is great). Everyhting goes in to dropbox: syllabuses class notes, powerpoints, ebooks, sound and movie files (for spanish).
Basically dropbox is a usbdrive that you never lose. Okay, enough advertising lol.
Approaching Literature is a class that analyzes short stories, poems, novels, and movies. However mine focuses on non Anglo Saxon literature, on the countries that were behind the iron curtain.
I am required to take a English dept class with writing for my Core, and I love analyzing literature.

Haha. PE? Are you going to a private school?
yeah what the hell? It's a great stress reliever, but required?

Sounds dumb. It's a great waste of tuition dollars when one could instead buy a Lifetime Membership for 1/20th of what they're probably paying in terms of credit hours for that class.
People at my school would storm the Dean's office if they made that a requirement.... But then again, since it's Texas, most people would be too big to fit through the door.
And good afternoon to you 😀
oh and how are you? [=And good afternoon to you 😀
Ahahaha that's terribleAlthough I wouldn't mind getting a grade in PE because I'm not self-motivated when it comes to exercise!
Good afternoon! I have a stupid question...and I don't know why I don't know this...do doctors perform research? Like research I could help them with?? volunteer with?
oh and how are you? [=
lol. I try to be, but there are days where I'm like meh when it comes to working out.
I think doctors in academic medicine perform research, but that's mostly at teaching hospitals or med schools. You should ask someone like Prowler or Tired about that.
I'm doing quite bloody fine, ma'am. It's a gorgeous day in Texas and the sun is up and out, burning everything in sight.
Should we move onto *ahem* a faster means of conveying conversation?
I'm glad to hear that!
I was wondering if I could just ask one of my dr. friends if his friends did research I could help with.
What are you waiting for? 😛
Haha. PE? Are you going to a private school?
2019: so the 2017 thread that I created just created a fb group and we're all friends on there..🙂 we need to do the same!!
capone doesnt have a fbYou're in the 2017 group and the 2019 group? I'm friends with you, but not ElCapone

Gee, where have you been for the last week?
At school, At my new apartment with no internet access, mostly at school. 😛
Lol. Living it up in the library and studiously attending every Pre-Med club meeting?
I've heard of dropbox, but never actually used it. I've been heavily relying on Evernote (on my iPhone and Mac) as well as iStudiez Pro (iPhone and Mac). I'll definitely look into it and click your link if I sign up!

Hell no. 👎
Rule number 1: Don't reveal your premed identity at school. NEVER !
eew dont reveal youre a premed. everyone will hate you 👎 we're pre meds. we have nothing to live for. nothing to prove.Because everybody will gun you down or ridicule you? Is it really that bad at your school?
