I'm REALLY shy in r/l. it's embarassing really...😳

Me too, but the only way out is to socialize. It's painful for the first minute then you forget you were ever shy to begin with.

In other words, that was my nice talk for getting you into fb. I have a mean heel that isn't so nice 😛

4 hours spent meticulously rewriting Bio and Chem notes in uber format, while cutting and pasting pictures from the powerpoint (complete with colored pencils)? I think so! 😀

Good thing I bought extra notebooks. Now whenever I eat a French Fry, I'll think about salt, which will make me think about sodium, which will make me think about sodium ions, which will make me think about transport proteins, which will make me think about glycoproteins, which will make me think about...

haha. You actually took notes in Bio over the chem bonding crap?

Nah we didn't start that yet. So far it has just been unit conversion, scientific notation, and sig figs. Oh, and just identifying a few elements. What you mentioned will be next week.

Then again, I've always found Chemistry easier than Bio. 😕

👍 That reminds me of a book I started reading. I pulled the link off snd somewhere. Google Super Power Memory, or you can find it free on theebooksale.com

It teaches you how to remember things by association, among other things. It has completely changed the way I study.

Oh god no. Bio is soooo much easier than chem.

I've been equally chill with either Chem or Bio, although in general, my ability to do well in a subject depends on my interest in it. If I hate something, I'm going to do terrible because I'll be uninterested to put in the effort to learn it. If I love something, I do well.

We only covered 1 chapter of our textbook in chemistry (absolutely LOVE the professor though) and 3 in Bio. :annoyed:

The volume of information I received in Bio in comparison with chem is certainly greater. That's just how my school does it, I guess.

I guess I should have been more specific. With bio it's more memorization/reading, with chemistry it's more analyzing and conceptualizing. I'm more of a reader so that's why i say bio < chem in terms of difficulty.

Ah, okay. I'm pretty much the opposite. 👍

I'm striving to have a GPA much like yours. :scared:

my GPA is where it is because 1) i frequent ratemyprofessor.com 2) I take only 2 science classes max. a semester 3) I don't take a heavy load 4) I study like a mofo 5) i have an easy major 😎

I think you'll always have more thrown at you in Bio than Chem. Imho, Bio's not just about mass memorization, but about how information fits together. For example, P700 and P680 in photosynthesis both oxidize water to produce oxygen while the Electron Transport Chain in mitosis reduces oxygen. Seeing these correlations can help you retain information better and help you crack test questions.

Chemistry will throw a lot less info at you since it's more conceptual, but will force you to solve a huge amount of problems to truly master the concepts

wow, you remember that from ap bio? i took that just recently and completely forgot everything 😳

yeah...i don't even know HOW to study..advice please.

It's always going to be different for every class. It's going to be different for everyone too, and it's just going to be a trial/error thing.

Okay, well how would/did you handle:
Bio
Chem
Calc
English

Just got hooked up with a beastly research rotation

Okay, well how would/did you handle:
Bio
Chem
Calc
English

Calc, practice problems, practice problems, practice problems, and more practice problems. The homework problems assigned to you will probably very similar to what's on the exam. I HATE math, but have been doing this and made a 100 on our first quiz 🙂

Calc

no need to study for english.

bio is easy, just read and write down the MAIN facts. Memorize sorta but not really. cliff quick review biology is a good book while taking the course. explains everything in 200 pages.

chem takes some prac, gen chem 1 is very basic, and i also recommend the book "chem for the utterly confused" very easy book to read and explains how to solve the most common problems associated with the class. I wish i used that book when i took the course.

calc- i mean if your up in calc it shouldn't be that bad for you.

Biology = pure reading and memorization of terms/things. I'd write notes (not to read, but to absorb the information). Do this over and over.
Chem + Calc = Understanding concepts and doing 1 million practice problems
English = use internet/read stuff/use people to correct your papers grammer/use professor

Thanks everyone. (I was actually serious about not knowing how to study, i kinda bummed my way through high school and got lucky.)

rotation? what is this?

Research rotation is where you research rotation by sitting in a spinny-chair and going at 1 million RPM. The goal is to stay on the longest without getting too dizzy and falling off (It's the Yankee version of Texan Mechanical bull riding). Only the best scientist gets published in Nature. Everybody else must endure a lifetime of shame.

My life is complete.

would it be weird to go to a celebration my PI's house if i've only just recently met him? it seems like it'd be a nice way to get to know him
