I just started doing ochem (synthetic chem) research this semester (hopefully will continue it in an internship this summer), and it's pretty cool stuff. Medical research also looks cool, but I think I'm going to continue doing synthetic research 👍

Ochem research seems like it'd be really cool but also maybe really boring. I think drug design would be awesome. But maybe boring. I dunno!

I do psych/neuroscience research, so it's a lot different. It is neuroimaging, so it's not surveys or anything, but it is still way different than a traditional wet lab.

You're going to have a blast when you get to it! (And by blast, I hope that it doesn't involve an ether fire or a peroxide explosion)

My first scribe shift is in a few hours and I am so nervous/nauseous, it's crazy. How is your Monday, everyone?

Horrible. I completely bombed my first orgo/biochem/whatever the f it is exam and promptly cried for 30 min.

I think I might have to indefinitely take some time off from crew.

:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry!!!!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁 there is plenty of time left in the semester to get your grade back up! And I'm sure you didn't do as badly as it might seem right now! Is your class curved?

Also, can you go to office hours or make appointments with the professor to go over what you missed?

🙁🙁🙁 Very sad. I don't think you did as bad as you believe you did though.

No idea if my class is curved. Luckily I can drop one exam and this definitely will be it. And yes, I did do as badly as I said. Bottom 10% I think?

Yeah, my TF and other people have reached out to me so I'm gonna take major advantage of that. Unfortunately I have another midterm to study for for another class within the next few days so it has to go on the backburner...

Oh I assure you, it was every bit as bad.

Yeah okay, you did badly 🙄🙄

Anyhow, forget about this exam and move on.

Yeah, I'm going to ask my coaches if I can take a week of to get my **** together, figure out a plan of attack, and catch up in all my classes.

You can drop an exam??? That's awesome but how many exams do you have that makes that possible? We can drop one of our weekly quizzes but that's cause we have ~10. Dropping a test would be nice!!

What is TF?

Last ochem midterm = done.

FEELS GREAT.

Until the final.

We have...3 midterms...I think...and a final.

TF means teaching fellow. While the professor teaches in lecture, we have grad students who are TFs who lead our weekly sections.

Oh right. Big classes and stuff. Yikes.

Love having my ochem class be 15 people. I dunno how I would do in a huge class. But some people feel the opposite!

Not to add insult to injury, but what did you cover for that exam? You have to know biochem mechanisms?

No worries, no more insult can be added lol

There was a lot of enzyme explanations, and like I said previously, Aldose/Ketose Isomerization, Kinases, Glycosidases, Phosphoglucomutase, enzyme kinetics, enzyme inhibition, etc

Wow, 15 TOTAL? or 15 in your section? I think there's abut 250 people in my class...and about 10 people in my sectoin

Total in my class. There are two sections technically, both taught by professors, and the other has about 20 people in it. But my lecture with my professor is 15 people.

Since there's so many sections, my TF is actually a senior who did really well in the class.

I'm jealous of you. 🙁

That's crazy!!!! Wow!!!!! That'd be a cool opportunity for the senior though!

We don't have grad students even. All of the people who teach us have PhDs. With the exception of lab TAs -- every lab (~15 people in a lab) has both a professor and a TA there at all times. And the TAs are undergrads.

Yeah he's amazing! And he has offered to go over material one on one with me, something that I never would have expected!

Ok. Here it goes. I know that most 2019ers haven't even started undergrad yet, but it's never too early to get started, right?

Mods, if you think this is inappropriate, please feel free to lock it. SDN community, if you think it's too early, please let it die.

And best of luck to all the 2019ers starting school in a couple of weeks.

:smack:

So my physics class is an absolute joke and I'm considering dropping it, but the problem is that I already dropped a class so I'll end up with 9 credit courseload in the end. What would look worse, a bad physics grade or taking so few credits?

The usual physics professor is on sabbatical this semester and he'll be back to teaching the class next year, so I know I'll end up with a better grade in this class if I wait to take it next year (I got an A- with him last semester).

So you're landing a C or below so far?

I think you'd have to have a really compelling reason to drop down to part time..

So you're landing a C or below so far?

I got a 50 on my midterm and have a 50 average on my homework, so yes.

The thing I'm banking on is the fact that if the grade on your final exam is higher than your average for the entire class, they make your final grade based on your final exam only. That's how I got an A- last semester even though I did badly on the quizzes and homework. But the tests last semester were much easier. I definitely haven't been giving my best so far, but I don't know if I can motivate myself to do better because I abhor this class so much.

My school doesn't do the part-time/full-time thing. The only requirement is that you take at least 3 courses. The problem is that med schools might not take it too kindly.

You will have two withdraws then in one semester?

Up to a certain point in the semester (tomorrow for this one), you can drop a class without it showing up on your transcript. After that date, it shows up as a W.

So why not drop it and replace it with another course?

😕

So it's add/drop, drop and withdraw?

pretty much, lol

First two weeks of school: add/drop
Until about the third month of the semester: drop (without a W on your transcript)
After the third month of school and right before finals: withdraw (with W on your transcript)
