why isn't anyone asking me? I'm the rookie here 😛

either way, rule of thumb: no more than two science classes per quarter/semester

I agree with Cali that no more than 2 math+science classes per semester since you don't want to overload or burnout, but idk since I haven't even started school.

I'm also doing bio 101 and chem 101 with labs, so I think that you'll be more than able to dominate those classes.

Right now, my schedule is:

Bio 101
Chem 101
Calc 1
English 101

'Cause I'm gangster. And a boss.

Besides did no one in college ever tell you to take your first semester lightly? You don't know what you're up against, and you're adapting to new changes...is it really worth taking that extra class to find out that you can't handle your classes? I don't know about you guyses, but it's not worth screwing my GPA over the first year at UG.

Yeahh.... I shouldn't have set up my schedule like that, but it's too late to change. But I got a 5 on AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Calc BC, so hopefully that'll pull me through. And I checked my professors on ratemyprofs and turns out that my calc and bio professors are really easy.

lol you're a boss don't worry about it. so what's your schedule?

cool schedule capone. i'm doing bio + chem + labs and also trying out a biostat class (small honors class). got really enthusiastic permission from professor. hopefully i'll learn more about public health. i'm gonna drop it if it all becomes too much though.

i agree with you cali but one thing is i've actually been taking classes at my school for 3 years already so i like know what the pace of the classes is. at the same time it might be harder doing it "for real." one thing i know is that a semester is actually a very short time. exams and midterms creep up on you real fast if you're not careful. it always seems like you've got a long way to go when you look at the syllabus on the first day, but that's an illusion. never fall behind.

i'm gonna go to every single office hour, probably get tutored a bunch too

but yeah i can always postpone bio. it's just i want both my bio and my chem to be ultra-solid going into mcat prep and whatnot

I think my first real lesson in UG was to never be too cocky with your potential. Sure your classes are easy, sure you got 5s on the AP, but never overestimate what will happen. There have been times where I'll go into a class, announce that it was ridiculously easy/waste of my time, and almost ended up with a B. How upsetting would you be if that actually happened to you? Just be careful 🙂 I know everyone on here is probably 100x smarter than I am, but I'd hate to see this happening to you guys.

Schedule: Art 101, Art 102, Chem 101, Spanish 1.

So you're a Junior? How did 2019 happen for you? I'm confused.

believe it or not bio, chem, calc, and english is the norm for most pre-meds/bio students. (i'm doing the same thing too + a college seminar class worth 3 credits)

Yup, you and me are the same first sem except I have an additional Eng course.

yeah i definitely agree with you. i'm pretty scared that i'm overestimating my work ethic and everything. cause when people look at a schedule and sign up for it, nobody seriously expects to get a string of C's and D's, or even F's. people are always confident about their schedule. everybody always imagines that this time, they're gonna study harder, be smarter, and have amazing time management skills and be as energetic as the energizer bunny. doing "decently" and getting a string of B's gets you a 3.0, which means you're hosed. it's all pretty scary.

that's why i'm definitely open to dropping a couple classes. i'll see after the first week. there are lots of things to do in college

true, true, and that's why i'm just gonna have to study 3x as hard as I did in high school. Plus I have no job and no commitments this fall.

Exactly. 👍 You nailed it.
Test the waters in the first week. If for ANY reason you get ANY inkling that a class is overwhelming, drop it harder than pearl harbor. This method has saved my ass so many times, and it's the reason why I've kept my GPA the way it is.
Better be safe than sorry! Besides, if you have a lighter course, you've got an increase chance of getting better grades AND doing some amazing ECs 😀

I'm majoring in Art.

oh god cali you've scared me silly, i guess i'm definitely gonna drop something now.

should i just use ap credit to skip bio 101? the teacher is amazing and preps you super well for understanding further bio...

if i put it off now, i'm gonna have to suffer through it later when i have more responsibilities. getting an A in bio (and other classes) is probably better as far as opening up basic research possibilities than AP bio.

The average premed GPA is low? DAng I was planning on working as a Pharm Tech, doing 19 hrs, join a frat/party, and not study at all like high school.

But in all honesty it's going to be really really weird to have to actually study.

Yes, but you do understand that once you have a strong GPA/MCAT score, the next thing the adcomms are going to be eyeing is your ECs. It's not enough to have straight As and a 45 on the MCAT. They want to see you have a job, have a bunch of ECs, and have all of the above mentioned.

Again, you and I are different people. I think I'm the dumbest person here (probably am), so for you, your schedule could be easy. Test the waters. There's no penalty in dropping classes (before the whole W thing shows up or w/e)

Don't use your AP credits. Biology 101 will be easy for you, and it'll be great review for the MCAT. Don't do it.

jesus christ dude i've already got like sections of the library planned out in my head where i can live. i'm prepared to study like there's no tomorrow. i even bought multi-colored pens and highlighters. my minigun is wound up, i'm ready to go :scared:

🙁, well i guess i should probably drop something too. Maybe the orientation class? 18 credits --> 15 credits. I'm already planning on volunteering on weekends though.

Didn't they tell you that during orientation? "Look to your left, look to your right. These people that are now claiming pre-med, will probably change their mind their second year in."

I can't tell whether or not you're being sarcastic, but I have three jobs, 16 units, ECs..e.t.c

You're in for a surprise.

Just see how it goes you guys. I don't know how smart ya'lls are, so I can't advise for much. Just see how first week goes.

you guys are scaring me. :scared:

oh yeah so now is a good time:

- what planning tools did you guys buy?
- did you buy multi-colored pens, etc.? how do you use em?
- do you use a binder with loose-leaf paper or separate notebooks?
- what do you do for labs? a lab folder?
- what's the best way to minimize the amount of crap you have to lug around?
- do you keep your laptop with you or is it a distraction? do you study without your laptop?

Just see how it goes you guys. I don't know how smart ya'lls are, so I can't advise for much. Just see how first week goes.
okay, but besides classes and volunteering, what else should i do my first year?

-Buy a planner or use your smartphone
-buy like two if you have to, but I always thought these were a waste of money.
-No binders. Just these things but 5 instead of 1
622072_125.jpg
They have little folders in them, so need to get a seperate binder/folder
-pen, paper binder notebook thing, and thats it
-dont study with your laptop around.

- i already bought my 5 star binders/notebooks
- nope. i'll probably try and use high lighters this year though
- binders + notebooks
- binders
- i only take what i need for the day (only have 2-3 classes a day) and my notebooks go in the binder
- i'm going to take it with me this year

okay, but besides classes and volunteering, what else should i do my first year?

First year is about testing the waters. It's about building 'tolerance' and doing everything under the 'burnout' level in terms of your ability.

1) Make sure you can handle your classes so you are getting straight A's
2) Add volunteering if you can do 1
3) Add other ECs, (leadership, tutoring, e.t.c) if you can do 1 +2
4) Perhaps a job/ research if you can do 1 + 2 + 3
5) Whatever else if you can do 1 + 2 + 3 +4

The most important thing is keeping your GPA up.

Didn't they tell you that during orientation? "Look to your left, look to your right. These people that are now claiming pre-med, will probably change their mind their second year in."

Nope I wasn't joking haha. I also want to join the weightlifting team at my school. As well as our Honors Band.

so if i've only got looseleaf paper so far, should i buy some good notebooks? because i realized that unless i type them up or something, notes taken on looseleaf paper are not gonna last. then i'm gonna be cursing myself come junior year when i need em for the mcat. i guess i'll get those 5-star one-subject notebooks

thanks for the advice neurosis. it looks like i might not bring my laptop around since it's such a huge distraction. like so many people just fritter time away on facebook

caligirl, thanks for the list of priorities. i'll keep them in mind. so i guess i should look for clinical volunteering type stuff first. luckily we seem to have pretty good programs set up for that at our school. but anyway, classes are the priority. each passing semester of school counts less and less towards your overall gpa. and how are semester grades determined? exams, midterms, final exams. and these things are separated by like 3-4 weeks. meaning how well you learn each roughly 6-8 (if TR classes) or 9-12 (if MWF) hour-blocks of lectures. gotta stay on the game every single day

In terms of note taking, I'd use your laptop. No need to buy papers and whatnot.

far too distracting i think. most of my professors recommend against it in their syllabi

That's only if you care about your notes smudging. I honestly take crappy paper notes because writing stuff helps me remember things.

Agreed. Trust me when I say that the first semester is a huge transition. I speak from the experience of doing it twice. The second time was no easier.

and that's why the average pre-med gpa is low 😛

Yup. Look at mine. I am sitting on a 2.93 (until my last summer grade comes in). I had a 2.7 my first semester (2nd time) because I failed 2 one credit classes. I failed one on pupose and the other...long story.

The average premed GPA is low? DAng I was planning on working as a Pharm Tech, doing 19 hrs, join a frat/party, and not study at all like high school.

But in all honesty it's going to be really really weird to have to actually study.

The best thing to do is to take notes and REVIEW them the same day. Make sure you store them into your long term memory immediately. Makes it easier than having to relearn it later for a test and prevents cramming. Read the chapters BEFORE the lecture. This helps you soak it all up because you know what the professor is talking about. You have to read them anyway, so do it when it is most advantageous. Oh and RECORD your lectures. Trust me on this one lol.

oh yeah so now is a good time:

- what planning tools did you guys buy?

Planning tools? If it is scheduling you are looking for, use something you are familiar with. If you have a smart phone, use it. If you plan on using your laptop in class, use the email calendar for classes, assignments, and parties. Keep it all in one place.

If you are handwriting notes, buy a box of pens that are comfortable for you to use. Take at least five with you, because you WILL lose them.

Dont use binders or wirebound notebooks. They take up way too much space. Use legal notepads or bring loose-leaf and put it in binders at home.

I minimize crap by using a very nice made-for-school rolling bookbag. I paid $100 for it, but it holds EVERYTHING. my ipad, keyboard, lab coat, goggles, books, change of clothes, everything.... Dont fool yourself into thinking you can lug your stuff around all day on your back. You will suffer.

As for a laptop...personal choice. If you find yourself using in to slack off, leave it at home and use the computer lab. If you would rather use it for notes but dont trust yourself with internet, dont connect to the schools wifi while in class.

Oh, and if you have a camera phone, use it to take pics of the white boards. You wont be the only one.

Okay, that turned out longer than I expected. I'll stop now 🙂

Handwrite if you want and later type it out as you study. I found that I retained more information by using my class notes and the book to type out a study guide. I never used it to study, but the process helped me retain what was necessary.

👍 I did this last year. Writing out my notes multiple times really helped.

Wow...a thread this long for incoming freshmen? That's quite...impressive I guess, if you guys have nothing better to do the week(s) or day(s) (?) before school starts...good luck on your endeavors, hope not too many of you end up opting out of the premed track!

Not an incoming freshman, but thanks for the luck 🙂

I actually think that having the support and advice of others at our level is very beneficial. It is never too early to start. We know what we what to do in life and know that starting the preparation for med school is something you start as a freshman, not as a junior or senior.

I joined a Premed AMSA club on campus full of juniors and seniors who wish they had started early. Getting advice and following it is better than doing it alone and making mistakes that could have been avoided.

awesome advice everyone, thanks. my prof just told me i can waive the bio lab with ap credit and just take the class normally. that's great since i can take bio and i'll have just one lab (chem lab). that should lighten things up a bit

OK, so i will bring just a small binder with looseleaf paper to class. i don't have any fancy stuff like a tablet or a smartphone, so i'll just manually write out my assignments and tasks and stuff in a small notebook. and i'll definitely create study guides from my notes (on a computer lab computer, not my laptop)

we'll see how it goes!

so has everyone moved in yet? when do you guys move in? i move in saturday

yeah i completely agree. like it takes a couple minutes at most to write out a post and ask you guys questions. but i learn a ton

1 five subject notebook and a laptop are all I need (and if I need more notebooks, I can just head down to the local Walmart...lol) 😀

yeah that's definitely me. my parents are going nuts, and i live like 10 mins away so i have no excuse 😛

but will that be enough? doesn't each "subject" in a 5-subject notebook only get like 50-60 pages or something? how is that going to last a semester? do you write really small? 😀

~sniff~ I'd KILL to live on campus 🙁

I live with my BF and about five miles from campus. I had to take the bus my first semester because my license was suspended (lack of insurance on my car). I drive now, but I HATE coming home. It is impossible to study and putting up with the BS at home is absurd.

I tried to see if my finaid could manage me living on campus...and there is NO way. I even put on my FAFSA that I want to live on campus and still come up short. I take out full Stafford sub and unsub loans and have grants (total of 18k finaid a year). It costs me about $3500 a semester just for tuition/fees/books. I use the remainder for my expenses (cell, insurance, child support, food, etc...) and have nothing left over 🙁

I could swing it if I had a job, but I went back to school b/c I couldn't find a job lol. I don't even qualify for federal work credit...which is absolutely pathetic! ~sigh~ Don't mind me and my self-pity party lol. I just envy those who get to stay on campus.

but will that be enough? doesn't each "subject" in a 5-subject notebook only get like 50-60 pages or something? how is that going to last a semester? do you write really small? 😀

Notebooks are okay, but I love using legal pads. They are hella cheap. I just flip up a new page for my next class and use one until the paper is all gone. Since I type out study guides from these notes and my book, the paper versions end up in the garbage. There is really no need to use separate sections or separate notebooks for each class. It gets really bulky to carry around and you will wish you went with something easier.

I also recommend getting a locker at your school if they have them available, if you live off campus. You can store your books there without dragging them to every class. Just take a notebook/laptop. Later you can study with your books and class notes and not have an aching back. I study at school because the moment my feet hit the driveway at home, my mind isn't thinking school. It wants television and internet.

so how much debt are you guys rolling in?

14k as soon as fall's loans are disbursed...

That's just school loans...don't ask about personal debt lol. That's a topic for another day.

Don't get sucked into accepting credit card offers. Learn to budget off the cash you have, not the cash you might have. I am over 35k in debt from personal credit cards I received at the age of 18 while enrolled as a freshman. It is easy to spend, hard to pay off.

😱😱😱 wow..that's insanity!
