😱😱😱 wow..that's insanity!

Which part? I go to a public uni and the cost is about $3500 a semester for just school espenses. I get $3700 in loans each semster. This upcoming one is my first with grants and it still isnt enough for living expenses. I now get 18k a year from loans and grants and half of that is used for actual school expenses. Im starting to work on getting some kind of scholarship, but I only qualify for need-based until I pull my GPA up.

The personal debt...well if my experience will cause others to not take a chance on personal credit, then it is worth it. I cant get a credit card today if my life depended on it.

Yup, my darling angel xD

I keep pictures of him up everywhere I go so I don't forget why I am going though what I am. He lives with his father, about a fifteen hour drive away. I chose medicine because I have a passion for it, but knowing that I can also support him financially.

Most of those credit card bills are so high due to interest and fees. It was about 5k when I was 18 and now at 27 it has only gone up. There is also a lot of issues with them selling my debt to other companies and both end up on my credit report. I've lived with it this long and I can't wait for the day to come when I can finally pay it all off.

AWWW he's SOOOO CUUUTEEE 😍😍😍

wow really? that's terrible 🙁 I hope you can get them covered soon!!

hey what's up

i've been freaking out all day about chem + bio + biostat at the same time. i've gotta drop something... all the other guys are gonna be playing it cool with just chem, which i hear is hard

i'm gonna talk to the biostat person on friday and see if it's worth it. i might also just waive bio with my ap credit... darn i'm chickening outta everything

i feel like taking a diverse number of humanities classes might be cooler. like i was looking at this beastly biostat guy a couple years older than me, and even he missed dean's list second semester of his freshman year. i've gotta be really careful first week. i'm gonna talk to all the profs about time investment and how easy/hard it is to get an A

have you even done stats yet?

have you even done stats yet?

good question. no. i'm screwed. i know a lot of "pure" (i.e. useless) upper-level math, but no stats really

i told the prof about my background and she was like "omg yes" but it could be a trap. :scared: i hope they start from the basics. if not, i'm bailing real fast

yeah i'm not gonna be overconfident about this. unless it's super easy, i'm dropping it. it's not worth it

in the class description it says stats would be helpful, but is not required

I'd recommend taking stats 101 first..biostat doesn't seem any easier 👎

yeah, i'm just gonna test the waters first few classes and see if it's way over my head. i'm gonna ask the other students about their backgrounds

what should i do about bio? hmmm

class of 2019, why you no post?

Yeah, here...just slightly depressed. It looks like I will be taking the DO road due to a screwed up first sem nine years ago. Not really bummed about being a DO, because truthfully I fit in with it better. Just bummed that I might have no chance to go the MD route if I want to pursue it.

I kinda wanted to try for UM Miller and FIU for med school because it is so close to home. Hell I go to FIU now lol and I love the school. Maybe I still have a chance, but I wont know for a long while yet. Just gotta keep getting A's and do very well on the MCAT.

two science classes..only. do bio 101

The average premed GPA is low? DAng I was planning on working as a Pharm Tech, doing 19 hrs, join a frat/party, and not study at all like high school.

Trust me: You'll do fine. That GPA is probably biased because it includes the people who were pre-med at first and then switched. And most pre-meds in my orientation group were like, "I wantz to be neonatal neurosurgeon cuz they only work 30 hours a week and drive Ferraris and Lambos". The other pre-meds who are juniors and seniors probably aren't going to make it since they don't understand the level of dedication it takes to build a solid application. You're way ahead of the game by planning to be a pharm-tech and by being on SDN.

-Buy a planner or use your smartphone
-buy like two if you have to, but I always thought these were a waste of money.
-No binders. Just these things but 5 instead of 1
622072_125.jpg
They have little folders in them, so need to get a seperate binder/folder
-pen, paper binder notebook thing, and thats it
-dont study with your laptop around.

😍 You're like a mentor to us padawans.

I joined a Premed AMSA club on campus full of juniors and seniors who wish they had started early. Getting advice and following it is better than doing it alone and making mistakes that could have been avoided.

+1

I tried to see if my finaid could manage me living on campus...and there is NO way. I even put on my FAFSA that I want to live on campus and still come up short. I take out full Stafford sub and unsub loans and have grants (total of 18k finaid a year). It costs me about $3500 a semester just for tuition/fees/books. I use the remainder for my expenses (cell, insurance, child support, food, etc...) and have nothing left over 🙁

I could swing it if I had a job, but I went back to school b/c I couldn't find a job lol. I don't even qualify for federal work credit...which is absolutely pathetic! ~sigh~ Don't mind me and my self-pity party lol. I just envy those who get to stay on campus.

Couple of questions

1. Your state-U is that expensive? U of Texas is like $11K per year tuition max and that's the most expensive school in Texas.

2. Why don't you qualify for Fed Work-Study programs?

so how much debt are you guys rolling in?

$0. I've got a full ride that covers tuition and books, but doesn't cover the cost of staying on campus - so I'll be staying 2 min away at my parents' place. My dad was happy to have me for the next 4 years, but I had to really convince my mom that I would be saving them money in the long run by staying at home.

i'm trying to mentor you guys. i've been on this website my high school year, my first year of college, and now my second..i'll try my best 🙂 i've got a couple of other mentors too who aren't on this website..but elcapone you are kicking my ass

clubs are honestly worthless unless you're a president

i think things like pre-med clubs are useful just to pick the brains of your seniors and to see how everyone else is thinking and doing. useless to list it on an application, of course

but yeah clubs without some really deep or meaningful involvement are probably worthless. there are a lot of other interesting ways to spend your time

Well this sem I am taking 15 creds and it cost $3300 with tuition, fees, and books. I pay $158.10 per credit, plus lab fees, health fees, athletic fees, parking fees, and whatever else they want to throw in there lol. I also go all three semesters, so its almost 10k a year.

As for fed work cred, I dont know. I have to go see fin aid this week for that and other things.

Agreed. I am not even clasified as a active member unless I get 25 pts for paticipation. I do go to meetings though because it helps keep me on track. They do a lot of fundraising and I sometimes help if I have time.

Lol, did you completely forget about Rice?

Full ride? I seriously have 90% of an idea where you are going haha.

Just be careful. I know the pre-med club on our campus are as worthless as our counselors 👎

"OMG you're not a biology major? You'll never get in! 😱 "

I'mma keep a close eye on Aesthetic, SS, Neurosis, Aviend, Venom and Capone.

it'll be curious to see where we all end up in four years 🙂

Know someone who did that and got an acceptance into med school

Lol. I wasn't kidding about the dating part. We went out a few of times and I got to know her dad pretty well and when I told him that my parents had never even stepped foot on college - let alone received a college degree - he told me about a special need and merit based scholarship they had. I only applied for it because he wasn't involved in it (I even made it clear to him that I wanted to be selected for it solely based on my own stats and not because of outside help) and I guess I was one of the lucky few picked for it.

Well... We did end up breaking up a few months later since we decided that it was better for us to remain friends and we still talk a lot with each other, but I'm still chill with her dad.

the dean LOVED the guy though

lmao are you just going to go for the texas schools?

I love how Texas schools have a vastly lower tuition than their private counterparts and have the 90% rule. But idk if I want to go to an outside school at this point.

Are you going to just go for the Cali schools?

So you just used her for her money? Gosh, what a golddigger.

Good for you man! It's all about connections in this game. The more people you know, the better you are off. Keep the dad around honestly.

Hm, go with the Texas school. The rest of us 49ers are jealous of you.

 IF I CAN GET INTO ONE!!!

rejected for fb friends

I am also open to new FB friends if anyone cares to be mine. Just PM your page link and I'll sent you mine as well.

I created a new friend list just for SDN and CaliGirl is looking lonely on it 😀
