There's a class of 2019 Facebook group??

Anyhoo, can't sleep. I'll probably be sleeping in class tomorrow...

Started the day off with the orgo II. I prefer last semester's prof because he was soooo organized and neat, but this semester has a great prof too. Orgo's the only prereq I'm taking this semester (if you don't count lab as separate).

Yes sir. PM your Facebook info and I can add you. We all mainly post in the '17 group though

Classes this semester:

English 101-4 credits

My cell bio prof has a 1.9 ratemyprofessor "easiness" rating, I'm a bit worried here :scared:

No good. No good. Do you have any easy ones?

My statistics professor has a 4.5 easiness, and 38/40 people in the class made an A last semester (but it is an honors section, when he teaches non-honors it's much lower). All of his reviews said you'll learn a lot, it's not too stressful, and he's a wonderful person, so I'm pretty excited! It'll be a nice boost to my sGPA (and cGPA as well).

Just realized - after doing some math this morning - that I will effectively be part of the Class of 2019, since I plan to apply in 2014. 😱

Classes start next Tuesday:

Gen Chem 1
Genetics
Pre-Calculus
Russian Conversation
TA in Biology 2 (It's actually a course, but isn't named what I called it)

16 credits. I'm also working four days a week in the university library at the coffee shop. FREE COFFEE!!

I hate checking RateMyProfessor, because it makes me so anxious, but they're usually right. I hadn't checked RMP before I picked my Bio professor, and he was everything the anon users said he would be. Good lecturer for the most part, but had a serious chip on his shoulder, difficult tests (that wouldn't be handed back, so you had no clue what you screwed up on), etc.

I hope that you end up finding that your cell bio class is a cinch!

Nice, it's hard to find professors like that at my school. And currently, there's only one other person teaching Cell bio and that person's class was full.

Yeah, back when I didn't know about RMP, I some how got better professors and wasn't all that anxious. Now, after the first assignment I go back and look at the reviews again and again lol 🙁
I hope it turns out to be really easy though :luck:

I just got an e-mail from my Chem professor stating that he has to cancel teaching my class because some of the schedules got mixed up. My class time will stay the same, but we'll have a different professor. He doesn't know who. Damn it. I picked his class because RMP said he was a good professor!

Hah that's happened to me twice now 😡

BTW, first class of Cell bio- prof was super nice, and I just checked myedu and her grades are 50% A's!! I don't know why RMP rated her so poorly.

Nice! I'm glad everything seems to be going well so far with it.

It probably has something to do with the other 50%.. probably students that didn't do well, and blamed it on her, unless the majority of the ratings had to do with her personality, in which case, maybe they're dumb. I know in my Bio class, a lot of the class average was brought down so much by students who never showed up to class but somehow managed to get there on test days, despite the syllabus being off.. and they screwed up our average.

Just bought my textbooks. One of them I couldn't find anywhere outside of the university bookstore; I even checked the ISBN number. I had to buy it from the bookstore, and it was $232.00. I think I spent close to $600 on books. Is it too early to drink?

It might be because your professors probably want university-customized books. In that case, just look up the title and author on google, and if you want to save a bunch, try ordering the international editions.

I did find the rest of my books at least half off, if not more, so that math book was really the only expensive one. It was just a bundle book, but yeah, it hurt my soul to spend that much on one book.

That sucks. Does your school not give you any scholarship money?

Well, I finally just got in-state this year, and I would have had more refund money, but it had to be split up over the summer semester as well, since I went to Russia for a Study Abroad program, so I didn't get as much as I would have not taking courses over the summer.

Nice! Congrats on achieving in-state status.

And wow! I bet your Russia program must have been pretty amazing. Did you have any interesting experiences there?

😱 I lived in Russia for a summer (~4 months). Not for study abroad though, I have family there (plus I wanted to visit). Russian is an awesome language, I'm upset I didn't take advantage of learning it from my mom until just a few years ago.

Every day was interesting, haha. From the excursions in Moscow to trying to make conversations with the locals. Every part of that trip was memorable 🙂

Ты говоришь по-русски? 🙂

I love listening to and speaking in the Russian language. My university has a Russian Culture Club; we have a blast!

2019, checking in, kinda late haha.

Welcome, although - not that it's a problem - this is pre-allopathic, and it looks like you're pre-pharm. I'm not sure if you meant to post in this part of the forum. If you did, then Hi 🙂

yea, im pre med now, deiced to switch from pharm. forgot to switch my status haha.

Had my first clinical experience today at the health clinic. I got there before class, so I was able to triage patients. Most of the triage points - height, weight, chief complaint - were pretty self explanatory to do, sans the fact that most of our patients spoke Spanish, and I only know Russian and English

I was told how to take temperature, pulse, and do blood sugar over persons 18+ (although with my boyfriend having Type 2 Diabetes, this was really easy). The hardest part was doing BP. I know how to take it, but to be able to hear it while others are being triaged in the same room is a bit tricky. It was only my first day, but I think I'll get it eventually.

It was definitely a rush!

haha nice. I was going to start volunteer work in feb., just so i could get a head started at school. Have room for improvement over last semesters GPA and kinda don't wanna get behind. from what i have heard about volunteer work is that you just clean rooms and write down things for the nurses and such, hopefully won't be too strenuous/ time consuming.

It really depends on where you go. Hospitals are probably going to have you do almost no clinical work because there's a huge liability. Free clinics might let you do stuff if you show you're interested. That's what I've noticed, anyway.

I have my first shift at my school's emergency response program in a few weeks! I'm really excited 🙂

On another note, I can't find any clinical experience, anywhere!! I hope this doesn't get put off until Junior year *gulp*

Oh no! ): There aren't any clinics or hospitals near your school?

There are, but there are about a 100 pre-meds to one hospital. My most recent application to a hospital went like this: "We have received over 350 applications for a volunteering position at xxxxHospital. Unfortunately, we only have 14 positions available. We will notify you if you get selected from our lottery."

Dear lord! That is terrifying!!! Oh my god. I had no idea that that ever happened. I'm sorry!! I hope you get selected :luck: Are there clinics or anything?

I haven't even started volunteering yet. I had a opportunity to do so in west Africa but i blew the chance, and now I'm coming back home, with nothing to show for it.

Aww, I'm sorry! ): West Africa sounds super cool though. Are you studying abroad there or something?

That brings up a question though. Generally, what ECs are you guys involved in? These forums make me feel extremely anxious and neurotic and like I'm a completely awful person and that I'll never get in anywhere, hahaha, but I don't know how true that is. Do people typically get involved with things their freshman year? Will I look crazy and desperate to have a ton of activities? I'm involved with seven or so volunteering / jobs / clubs / artistic endeavours currently.. Is that about where you guys are?

Free Clinic, Walk-In Clinic, Urgent Care...anything like those around you? The hospital isn't the only place to get clinical experience. Good luck!

Man, I'm like less than that, I believe. I work too, so my ECs involve two clubs (Russian Club and MDPA, which is a pre med club), and volunteering three days a week at the health clinic a block away from my university. That's kind of where I'm restricted at the moment, but MDPA does help with volunteering opportunities so I hope to get in on that.

Three days a week is impressive though!! I only do one day of clinical volunteering a week, which I feel bad about (most people I see on here say they do at least two a week). Maybe I will talk to the volunteer office.

Man... I have a chem quiz tomorrow and I just am not feelin it. I ended up loving Chem I, but I haven't gotten very interested in this semester's Chem yet. Oh and Bio is kicking me because it's a completely self-taught class... Our classtime is spent in small groups discussing the material. It's definitely a new experience for me!
What about you guys? How are you liking your classes?

It's not impressive anymore, heh. I took on too much this semester, and since I also work a decent amount of hours, I've had to stop volunteering for the time being. If I can't pass these classes, volunteering won't matter, because I won't be pre-med anymore.

My classes are okay. Chem I is kinda kicking my ass, at least the math part, so I'm trying to do what I can. Pre-Calculus is okay, but I think some of the students need to shut up, lol. I can't calculate the answer very fast at this point, and when they answer the question 2.3 seconds after it's asked, I never get a chance to figure it out for myself.

Genetics is pretty cool. I love the Biological Sciences, and my teacher is French, and really excited about what he teaches. I expect him at one point to show us a slide, exclaim in some French excitement word, and talk about the slide. My Russian Conversation class is pretty awesome; we're a small community in the school so we're close knit like family. Good times.

I was visiting some of my family there. but still I feel like I could have done something, y'know?

Oh, gotcha. Chem I was really really hard for me at first too. After I thought I had done well, I got my first test back and got a C, which was a definite reality shock. But I kind of figured out a system -- I blanked out all the previous quizzes and tests and retook them multiple times before the next test, just to get myself into the mindset, and I practiced problems constantly. I also typed up my notes before every test and made a comprehensive study guide. It was neater and it helped me re-study just by typing them up. At the end of the semester, I got 100% on the final and a 96% in the class, so it worked! 🙂 I hope that some of that is helpful.. Believe me, though, I totally understand where you're coming from.

Ew math. I hate know-it-all people who just like shout out the answers with no regard for anyone else 😡 I'm sorry!!

I'm glad you're liking biology!! Maybe you can help me... hahah. I like biology, it's just really hard to learn all on my own. Good teachers make all the difference I think!

Oh, are you fluent? Jealous! I wish I could speak another language!

I was visiting some of my family there. but still I feel like I could have done something, y'know?

Oh my gosh that's still so cool. I really want to go to Africa someday. And yeah, maybe you could have, but at the same time, visiting family is important too. And a lot of people look down on short volunteering things abroad. I don't really get the complaints, but they are popularly debated!

Those are actually really good ideas. Our class uses an online homework assignment thing where I get a ton of practice. I'm finally kicking dimensional analysis' ass!

I'll do what I can definitely to help you in Bio.. if it's Bio 2 that is, hehe. Bio 1 I took forever ago, so I'm kind of rusty 🙂

And no, I'm not fluent yet. I wish! I got a lot of practice last summer when I went to Russia for five weeks. It's basically sink or swim there, since unless you're in a big city, no one speaks English. It's quite a challenge, but I have so many memories from it 🙂

Oh I HATE dimensional analysis. Good that you're getting it though!! You'll definitely need it later on 🙂

It is Bio 2, technically! I haven't taken Bio 1.. I will probably do it right before or after I take the MCAT, cause I don't think ecology stuff is on there. Bio 2 is Cell Bio & Genetics for me 🙂

That's so great!! Man, that's cool. I'm planning on going to South America for 6 weeks next summer to get semi-fluent in Spanish 🙂 I think language immersion is just so awesome.

Yeah, DA is finally starting to click for me. I was so stressed last week, thinking I wasn't going to make it, and now I'm finally starting to get it.

Bio 2 in my college was basically A&P, but extremely detailed, and it added insects and plants to the mix. I'm taking a Genetics course right now. If you're interested, there's a set of videos by a group called 23andMe that's on YouTube. It explains everything and makes it interesting too.

Language immersion is really the best, and it also gets you to learn slang. You'll never really learn slang words/phrases or colloquial phrases in a typical language class. But you'll get it in the country itself. I encourage everyone to do a study abroad trip in the country of their choice, if they have the means to do so. It's a fantastic experience!
